- Nis01 - 05-15-2009 Quick update, haven't really done much to the miata in a while except for drive it all over the place. Finally got my hands on a '01+ center console for cheap, they are pretty hard to come by and when you do find them people want a fortune for them. Install was pretty easy and all components from my old center console (lock, window switch block) swapped right over. While in the process I performed a foglighectomy because they really weren't very functional and the wiring was an eyesore in the engine bay since the 'sport' did not come with fog light wiring from the factory. Comparison '01 vs. '99: ![]() Installed '01: ![]() Goodies are on order with a couple items already in the garage.
- Jake - 05-16-2009 Console looks good Shea! I really dislike the 99/00 cupholder setup, I don't know who OK'd that design, but 01+ is so much better IMO. Did you get your rimZ on yet? Pixplzthx. - Nis01 - 05-16-2009 Jake Wrote:Console looks good Shea! I really dislike the 99/00 cupholder setup, I don't know who OK'd that design, but 01+ is so much better IMO. Agreed. Its pretty pitiful to think that it was actually designed to attempt to hold a drink, not to mention the inability to shift with the console door wide open. I managed to just use the back of the passenger seat as my coffee mug holder and that seemed to do the trick quite well. Also, the latch has a tendency to break on the '99 setup which can be fixed with some adhesive but its not real clean. Wheel production is confirmed completed so they should be shipping fairly soon, I will definitely post some pictures once they are here and mounted. Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Nis01 - 06-25-2009 Well, after finally getting around to swapping out lines, pads, and rotors I discovered that the driver side front caliper has a pretty big rip in the piston gasket. I have a refurbished caliper ordered for the repair as it was not much more than the rebuild kit. Hopefully it will be an easy swap, is there any specific prep that a new caliper would require when initially installed? There was no noticeable leak or further damage from that caliper but it seems replacement would be right thing to do. Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - .RJ - 06-25-2009 Its just the dust boot, you can ignore it. I gave up on running those on the race car. FWIW, I prefer to get rebuild kits and do them on my own with OEM parts, you know it'll be done right. Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Nis01 - 06-25-2009 .RJ Wrote:Its just the dust boot, you can ignore it.So you think there is really no need to replace it? How difficult is it to just replace the dust boot? Basically if there is no leaks, don't replace? Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - .RJ - 06-25-2009 I would still rebuild them for a skreet car but I wouldnt worry too much about it. To replace them you'll need to tear down the caliper, which is pretty easy if you have an air compressor. If not then uh.. buy the reman parts from the store. Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Nis01 - 06-25-2009 Gotcha. Thanks for the information RJ, I really appreciate it. I ordered the caliper overhaul kit and am going to try and rebuild the front calipers ASAP. I went ahead and installed SS lines and bled the brakes and clutch with ATE SuperBlue fluid. Brakes feel rock solid, but I am going to need some time to get used to not having ABS... way too easy to lock them shits up. Wheels and tires are FINALLY on the car and I'm pretty pleased with the appearance of the car now. Tires feel grippy and connected which also makes bumps a bit more noticeable. No rubbing that I can tell after a quick drive, I will know for sure after the autocross tomorrow. For future reference, what did you guys use to block off the brake lines from leaking while you were doing the caliper rebuild? Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Evan - 06-29-2009 dust boot is easy, youre risking getting fudge and brake dust packed in between the piston and the caliper if you dont replace it. Shea I have a complete set of used '99 calipers Ive been holding onto as spares that I dont really need anymore if you're interested in having some spares. Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Nis01 - 06-30-2009 Having some spares probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Let me know how much you want for them and I'll take them off your hands. Anybody have an effective method for clogging up the brake lines while the calipers are off for service? Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Maengelito - 06-30-2009 Nis01 Wrote:Having some spares probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Let me know how much you want for them and I'll take them off your hands. I don't know but a rubber cap or a piece of tape rolled up to the same diameter as the banjo bolt? Its not gonna be gushing fluid when you disconnect the hose and you're gonna have to bleed the system anyway, just don't get any brake fluid on the paint. Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Nis01 - 06-30-2009 Yea, I was just trying to think in advance about the fluid loss because when I did the SS lines last week the resevoir emptied pretty quickly. I had to refill it at least three times during the install. I just want to avoid running the resevoir dry while doing the rebuild. Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - .RJ - 06-30-2009 I use a bolt the same size as the banjo, with a nut and a pair of old copper washers (usually the ones that came off the banjo bolt) and just tighten it down (hand tight) onto the end of the line - it may drip a tiny bit but thats it. If you're replacing lines, then there's not much you can do though. Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Mike - 06-30-2009 i always just have the new caliper ready to be threaded into immediately... never had a problem with the reservoir getting anywhere near dry. maybe your lines flow better than mine? Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Nis01 - 06-30-2009 If I had gone with an already rebuilt caliper it really wouldn't be an issue as it would be a quick switch over. I was just going to rebuild my current ones and I'm not exactly sure how 'speedy' I'm going to be with it since its my first attempt at brake rebuilds. RJ's solution sounds like it will work just fine so I will try that this weekend. I appreciate all the help. Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Mike - 06-30-2009 ohhh i see... then yeah, my method doesn't help you much at all
Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - Nis01 - 07-08-2009 Brakes are back together thanks to Evan having some spares. I will eventually get around to rebuilding the stock calipers, thanks for all the replies on the matter. I'm definitely enjoying the increased braking ability of some fresh pads and rotors. I found one rubbing issue after the last autocross and a quick change of the ride height seems to have resolved it but I guess I'll know for sure with the next event. Updates: 949Racing SS lines ATE SuperBlue Brake Fluid Carbotech XP8 / AX6 Carbotech Rotors 949Racing 6ULs 15x9 (Bronze) Hankook RS3 225/45/15 Hankook RS3 review: VERY sticky street tire. Overall good feel, they are a bit stretched on my setup so the side wall feels quite firm and crisp. The braking ability and turn in was impressive. I found the sweet spot to be about 33 F / 30 R hot but I think they could still use some more scrubbing in. No notice of 'greasy' feeling that I normally encounter throughout a day of autocross runs. Car was able to stay very neutral and comfortable and I could continue to find additional speed with each consecutive run. They seem to manage heat quite well and stayed consistent once hot. Much more testing to be done and I will update with the durability of this tire as I drive on them more, still learning the limits. Quick pictures of the car as it currently sits: ![]()
Re: Project '99 Miata Sport - ScottyB - 07-09-2009 that car is so hot right now
