hold the f'ing phone. aside from Justin, none of you pantywaisted cockmuppets have so much as mentioned the A-10 Warthog. come on! this is the plane that deficates all over the idea of stealthy tippy-toe zoomie aerodynamics for those hair-product wearing Topgun types, instead preferring to horse around with a gatling cannon the size of a dumpster....sort of the equivalent of a giant 6 barrelled ballsack hanging from its ugly mug. half the wing gone? that's coo, most of the systems are triple-redundant, so we'll still make it home in time to get a good table at the mess hall.

i daydream of this plane. i love that it has survived and will continue to, based on pretty much nothing other than brute force. i love that its 2013, and yet the best way to use this thing is to aim the entire fucking plane at something and pull the trigger, and behold the world disintegrating before you.

Trumpet of God

i hope i'm NEVER that close to the business end. :20 seconds in

That's just too easy. Pick a plane that EVERYONE doesn't think is A1SuperHappyFunTime if you want to eat at the big kids table.

Re: The Official "Jet Planes Are Effin' Boss" Thread - D_Eclipse9916 - 02-28-2013

I'm more a big fan of some of NASA's experimental aircraft...

Specifically the X-29, for it's radical approach to try for higher angles of attack and maneuvarability. And come on, moveable canards and a forward swept wing? Bad ass.

And talking about Jets, Ramjet and Scramjet engines are just freaking cool to think about. The force of air at supersonic speeds is enough compression, no actual fan blades needed, in fact no moving parts...at all. Pimp. Currently holds the "public" record for air-fed winged aircraft at Mach 9.6, 6800MPH!!!

Let me help you out Scotty.

I can't even tell when an A-10 is taking unless I'm looking at the flight line. It is as weak as it gets. The B-1 takes off with afterburners. It's basically like the 4th of July every time they launch at night.
Hog (A-10) pilots sound standard on the radio. I've never heard a Bone (B-1) driver that didn't sound like Death atop a pale horse when checking in for an op or responding to a TIC. A-10s are slow. Better hope they are near bye if you need them. Bone's can hit Mach 1.25. They can provide support to a large area. Currently fixed wing assets are not doing a whole lot of strafing so Hog's have an awesome cannon that they never get to use. Guess which aircraft drops bombs better? Lots of bombs.

Pssh.

Look, everyone knows that the Warthog is a sick little piggie. No one is denying that. It has a gun that generates more thrust than the engines. Insane. I didn't want to just lay out "All the Cool Planes At Once".

And also:

Travis makes an excellent case.

i ain't even mad. B1's are one sexy lawn dart. i was actually thinking of bringing them up in a later post.

fuck off USMC, you just got the osprey. which likewise was overbudget unreliable and questionable utility (they sure did look cool as shit flying though)
VTOL is a joke and Im no battlefield general but I doubt there is much actual realized strategic advantage to a whizbang stealthjet that fucking hovers. thats like chrome spinners of the jet world.
I think the USMC aviation requirements have basically ruined two major projects.

One of the major flaws of the V-22 was introduced because it was required to be able to fit on an amphibious carrier with it's nacelles folded. That not only introduced problems with getting it folded properly, but it also necessitated smaller than optimal rotors. With smaller rotors they needed the engines to run harder to provide the same amount of lift, which led to heat issues. Put all of that together and you end up with an aircraft that has killed quite a few people in accidents, and has gone way over budget. Granted, rotary wing aircraft are dangerous in the first place and helos like the Chinook had a bunch of crashes in testing too.

Problem with the JSF is again the V/STOL requirement. Had they just stuck to the Navy and Air Force variants it would've been fine. As Rex said, where does the Marine Corps ever go that the Navy doesn't go with them? Marine Corps close air support could be met by Navy strike aircraft rather than spending billions of dollars on the F-35B and jeopardizing the entire JSF program.

And once again the Dept of Defense hasn't learned from our previous mistakes with military aircraft procurement. By trying to make something that performs a bunch of different and disparate roles, you end up with an aircraft that excels at none of them. The JSF program is essentially too big to fail at this point because we've tied the future Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps air power to this one fucking plane.

I was always under the impression that the F35 was not supposed to excel at any one thing. It's more like a Gen 4.5 fighter than a Gen 5. I think the idea was to have a larger quantity. The F35 carries half the A/A missiles of the F22 for example. I think the JSF gets a lot of bad press because on paper its worse, but it was supposed to be.

The F35 was designed to be a strike fighter platform, like the F-16 or F/A-18. The F-22's mission is air superiority, so it being faster, stealthier, and having more AA missiles is by design. The problem is that the F-35 is not shaping up to be as good a strike aircraft as it should have been.

Re: The Official "Jet Planes Are Effin' Boss" Thread - CaptainHenreh - 02-28-2013

So, here's a plane you don't hear much about. We don't fly it anymore, but the Aussies used it as recently as 2010:

The F-111 Aardvark -

[Image: F-111%2BAardvark%2BTactical%2BFighter%2BBomber.jpg]

It was a supersonic fighter/bomber that, through its service life, was:
The first variable geometry (swing wing) fighter:

A Bomber (capable of carrying a B43 1 Megaton nuke):

A electronic warfare aircraft:

And a NASA Test Jet:
[Image: Aircraft_Fighter_Jet_F-111_AFTI_NASA_0.jpg]

Anyway, I was reading a book about the F117 in which an F117 pilot talked about his time flying the EF-111A Electronic Warfare "SparkVark". Anyway, since it was a long range "bomber mate" fighter/bomber/general purpose ass kicking machine, it carried a large amount of fuel. At full load, in fact, it was too much fuel to safely land, so if they had "too much" they had to dump it.

Well, being RED BLOODED GOD FEARING AMERICANS the pilots would, on occasion, dump the fuel...AND THEN LIGHT THE AFTERBURNERS AND SET THAT SHIT ON FIRE:

OH FUCK AMERICA IS SO AWESOME

Dump and Burn!

Yeah. Our F15's have been working way past their intended service life, and the F35 was supposed to sort of fill the role of the F15, 16, and 18E.

The F22 is for knocking planes out of the sky. That's pretty much its one and only job.

The F35, however, was supposed to take off from a carrier, drop some ordinance on some brown people, and then skirt back through possibly hostile airspace to return without getting shot down.

Furthermore, the original intent was that a lot of the "work" from the F22 would bleed over into the F35. Stealth design, avionics, subsystems, etc. Not in a parts commonality way, but at least in a design elements and production methods way.

TURNS OUT LOL THAT WAS WRONG

Scramjet for the win. Who needs stealth when you can go faster than anything on this earth other than the light hitting it?

I'm all for continued drone technology so we can be overrun by Skynet someday. No but seriously, planes without people makes a lot more sense. I envision in the future that the last thing an Allah-fearing militant is going to see before being sent into his afterwordly throng of demon "virgin brides" is a USAF drone rocketing over the mountain, popping legs and arms out of its fuselage and spewing liquid napalm through the opening of his cave dwelling.
