It does look like it would snap if you left it your pocket and sat down.

I also wonder if the screen is going to go the way of the original Nano.

What if it were leather ;-)

I just need to try one. My argument from before is those same people that are willing to pay for the extra bit are the same type of people that might buy this thing (if the touch screen is usable :-) )

I imagine they learned their lesson.

Evan Wrote:you would pay $600 for an interface? Hey, its your money, but if I were you Id probably stop buying the low end shit phones and try a better phone a touch cheaper than $600

Again, you're missing the point in order to bash the apple product, but whatever makes you feel better. All of the phones I've bought have been in the $200 range (and I paid full price for my last sprint phone).

I could have also pieced together a cheaper mp3 player with more capacity... but I dont want to piece shit togther, I want the thing to work out of the box. The iPod interface is stupid simple to use and its got great 'aftermarket' support for just about everything you'd want.

Your Helio phone can load google maps, but its still a tiny little screen that makes it incredibly tough to read. If the iPhone does everything it looks like it can do, and the features are as easy/intuitive to use as the iPod, then it looks like a pretty serious peice of hardware, even at $600. If the initial reviews peg the thing as a complete turd, then there's no reason to buy other than to get on the bandwagon.

It looks like a really cool piece of kit and if its up to Apple standards it will be easy and intuitive to use but I'd rather wait and let other people be the guinea pigs before committing myself to a 2 year relationship. It would be nice to combine two things that are in my pocket right now but being an early adopter means being the first to suffer. Besides, about a year after its introduced I'm sure they'll have 10 and 20 GB versions.

Is the price of flash memory coming down that quick?

- G.Irish - 01-09-2007

Its dropping preciptously. It might not be exactly one year but it certainly won't be long before they come out with a gen 2. I've still got another year or so on this contract anyway so I can wait.

Multi touch screen

I think this is the technology they're using for the screen, it's alot different that the regular touch screen you're thinking of. Just watch the video you'll understand why a lot of people are so excited about how intuitive it is.

Im not missing the point of anything, in fact I said it looks like a great phone but pointed out some weaknesses, and I busted your chops for buying shitty phones but all of the sudden wanting to buy a $600 one, which for some odd reason you took very personally.
(and btw Ill point out both teh c417 and cu400 cingular phones you tried were low end next-to-free phones.)

its definately a serious peice of hardware and for $600 it should be. I certainly wont buy one but Im excited that the competition should spark some more development from other brands

I returned one of them, and I'm returning the other as soon as I find a decent replacement....

I'm done with busted shit here. I want things that work without hassle Smile

I think that is the same deal w/ the touch screen. I think Hunter said it earlier - I doubt the prices will fall. I'm thinking they will follow the iPod pricing scheme (same price just more memory) My question - does anyone think they will eventually let other wireless providers in ?

sure the iPhone is super pimpy and I guess if I decide to go the "smartphone" route I would consider one (when/if they get more memory) but with Verizon on the Metro and 90% of my friends on Verizon iI just couldn't justify switching to cingular

I wouldn't be surprised if the other providers didn't want in. I'm sure Apple had a lot of stipulations in their agreement with Cingular that are things that others might not have wanted to give up.

For instance, a lot of providers charge $1, $2 or more for ringtones. That's free money to them and maybe they didn't wanna concede that revenue stream.

Perhaps the other providers are adopting a wait and see approach but I think this is gonna put big wind in Cingular's sales. Tell u what though, this is gonna KILL Blackberry. Investors are already starting to dump their stock (down by ~8% today).

- JackoliciousLegs - 01-09-2007

Making a GSM phone into CDMA is rather difficult. I have lots of friends at Motorola that are either EEs or ME in product development and they were explaining why it took so long for a CDMA razr to come out and why it first came out a little bulkier. I think the iPhone is going to stay GSM. Sorry Reed...

- Evan - 01-09-2007

Tmobile will be 2nd in line after Cingular due to network similarity (both run GSM based networks), but the phone will need different hardware to be compatible with CDMA based sprint and verizon

This will do nothing to Palm/Dingleberry/PocketPC sales. Its not a business phone and it doesnt pretend to be. Feature wise, current PDAs are already superior, and it lacks business push-mail, outlook sync and office doc viewing and editing.

- ViPER1313 - 01-09-2007

I would be scared as hell that thing would break into 2 pieces in my pocket.

- G.Irish - 01-09-2007

I think for most business apps its not going to be relevant as it stands now but all of the other smartphone/pda vendors have been attempting to get more mass market penetration. Palm has had more success there with about 60% of their sales coming from the non-enterprise market but that also means they're gonna have a tougher time competing.

then why buy your F4I and not go with something newer Tongue

I love gizmos and gadgets - but after owning several pocket PCs I will not own one again till a later date, when i do not have to worry about smashing the screen - the constant freezing, though VZWs internet is wicked fast, and there wireless sync was real time - the phones just were not up to par.

Hopefully he starts soon and stops showing up at redskins games... I blame him for the 5-11 season!!!
