This is a 1 series:

As Chan said, what you posted is a E46 "Compact". We got the E36 Compact in the 318ti, which sold like shit here and more than likely is the primary influence for not bringing the 1 series here.

It speaks volumes about the 1 series that its the third best selling BMW without being sold in BMW's (and the World's) largest auto market.

- Andy - 01-04-2007

Wouldn't they be too expensive and edge into the 3 series territory? 5th and TopGear both bitched about how expensive they were.

- JackoliciousLegs - 01-04-2007

Ok, back on topic.

I drove it. Here it is:

It's been bumped on the front bumper on the left stripe. You can basically see it in those photos. It's minor, but there. Bad. It's got xenons. Good. It drives well. Good. It got a flat on our drive. Bad. They'll fix it. They'll give me 11k for my car... bad. They'll give me a tax break for trading with them of 1k... good. It drives well. Good. The dealer doesn't do a full inspection when they sell. Bad. I can take the car to get it inspected. Good. I will incur 10k in debt w/o a down payment. I can swing 3k down easy. So 7k of new debt. Or... I could be free and clear on the scooby in a month. Then i could max out my Roth and start investing more heavily... or sideline it for a year.

It's a ridiculous deal on a cooper S. I just don't know if I can justify it. What are your opinions?

- BLINGMW - 01-04-2007

I wouldn't daily-drive around a $20k, nice looking car in the city unless I made a WHOLE lot more $, but that's just me. Heck, I wouldn't drive around the $11k Subaru! I vote for driving the Subaru into the ground unless there's something really wrong with it, then doing something more fun or smart with the extra $ after you pay it off.

I think you answered your own question. Why would you go into more debt when the car you have is:
  • Nearly Paid for
  • Good in the Winter (which is the current season, believe it or not)
  • Kind of sporty (certainly not an "econobox", where'd you get that from?)
  • Running just fine and dandy
  • Not going to really give you what it's worth on the trade in on this Mini.
I just don't see it, but maybe Someone with mathemagically come up with a forumula that says a used Mini is financially better than a used Subaru.

Its not financially better its just more fun to drive.

In Rex's world, some oddball car with a LS1 is financially better than a Subaru Wink

- JackoliciousLegs - 01-04-2007

Just got off the phone with mini service. It was a demo car and therefore has a full warranty until june of 08 and 55k miles. That's good and bad, again...

- .RJ - 01-04-2007

I would run far, far away from that Mini. There's enough of them around where you can get a clean 1-owner not banged up car.

It looks really good in that color Smile I've always liked those things...

Not a 2 year old S w/40k for $17k.

I fear your first impressions are correct. I don't know if it's worth it.

I never said anything about fiscal responsibility until just now, when Jack said "Gee, I don't know if I should spend the money, get hosed on my trade-in, and still have a used car or pay off my car and save my money."

*squinty eyes*

You make things up, RJ.

You're a dirty stuff maker upper!

- ScottyB - 01-04-2007

i'd hold off Jack. the grass always looks greener....

there are tons of minis out there. yeah, this one's a deal but is it? unless you're really itching to dump a few grand on a new driving experience i think you'll be thanking yourself 10 times over many years from now when your Roth is blowing up and you can just get that FD of your dreams and have the money to pay for the rotary you blow sky high. Big Grin

- Andy - 01-04-2007

Not to shit on anyone's parade, but I not a fan of going into debt for a car. Why incur new debt when you're so close to being free and clear? :dunno:

You are so right. I incurred debt on this car because I had to. Now I don't. Why should I.

true that... any one of us could die tomorrow.

putting money away is great and all, but if you foresee having enough for a house plus this fun little car now, go for it.

then again, everyone is different. my parents have been frugal their entire lives and now get to move in to their dream home when they retire. me? i don't want to wait that long to enjoy the money i make.

I'm pretty sure you must say this to yourself every time you make a "rough' financial decision.

asteele2 Wrote:I'm pretty sure you must say this to yourself every time you make a "rough' financial decision.

Contrary to popular belief, my purchases are pretty well calculated Wink If I can afford it, and I want it... then go for it and have fun! I enjoyed building the racecar and racing last year.

If I cant afford it then I pass. If I hadnt raced last year, or built a racecar, or any of that nonsense I could've bought a condo or small townhouse, but that just doesnt interest me right now. Maybe in a few years.

- Andy - 01-04-2007

Wow. There's a difference between being cheap/not enjoying life and blowing dough for no good reason.

If Jack was driving Andrew's Accord Big Grin, I'd say go for it but he's driving a pretty nice car as it is. You can also buy a damn nice, fun car these days straight up.
