Don't be fooled, NASCAR teams don't pay shit either. Over the wall team memebers average $800-$1200 a weekend, but the vast majority of the guys doing the real work, building the cars, probably make less than $35k a year.

my buddy is a Timing Official for Nascar - he makes pretty good money. I don't know the exact figures, but pretty awesome for only working 3 - 4 days a week

Officials don't work for the teams though. If you actually want to do the cool shit, you're not going to get paid much.
Personally, I don't really consider working for NASCAR to be involved with motorsports.
