When you told me about this at Dave and Busters, I felt really bad for ya. This endeavor has been one kick in the nuts after another. Keep your chin up though, cuz things will get better. And be sure to let us know of anything that we can do to help ya. Unfortuneately, I doesn't look like I'll be joining you at the Beaver, but I'll be rooting for ya back here at Sheetz
A Rough First Outing - G.Irish - 06-09-2004
I had decided that I was going to do the Beaverun run MWHC/ECHC race on June 5-6. My plan was to drive the car up and have Kaan follow me with Camel Tow but he was not able to come. Undeterred I packed Geeser II with my TD wheels with 225 Hoosiers and decided to get on my way. I had the foresight to check the weather so I picked up some trash bags and rain gear to keep dry.
I left late about 3 or 4 am on Friday because I had to wait for a break in the heavy rain to finish some stuff on the car before I left. In hindsight I should've just sucked it up and gotten soaked and changed before I left.
Anyway I got to Beaverun a little later than I wanted and missed practice. It was raining of course and I had to take a paddock space in the grass but luckily it wasn't too muddy. Anyway, I got to the task of putting the R tires on. Turns out the wheels didn't fit in the rear. The center of the wheels was too small for the hub. Fucking great, now I was going to have to scrap my weekend because I only had one set of wheels I could use. Oddly enough it looked like the wheels fit on the front...
I was ready to drive home but Chad graciously offered to let me borrow some 5 mm wheel spacers. Ok, back in business. I put the spacers on and starting torqueing all the wheels down. When I did the front however I saw there was a little bit of space between the wheel and the brake rotor hat. I figured maybe I didn't tighten the nuts enough so I cranked the hell out of then. Good, they looked all right.
I decided to take the car on track for a few laps in Group 3 before I went out in the race (already missed qualifying). I get out and get up to speed and notice heavy smoke coming from the rear. I pull into the pits and the rear tires were rubbing heavily on the fender and had taken a huge strip of rubber off. Had I gone another lap I probably would've blown a tire.
Well shit, now my weekend was really done. I decided to find Phil (from Phil's Tire Service) to pay him for some 205 Toyos I had ordered. Why didn't I just use the Toyos right? Well, at this event there was no tire support so there was no way I could've gotten them mounted. At this point I'm screwed. I ended up watching the race in my race suit from the top of the hill overlooking turns 1 through 4.
Well I was just about ready to pack up when Dave (davidnyc on Honda-tech, races an H2 ITR) and Phil came up and Phil offered to lend me some wheels he already mounted new 205 Toyos on. Awesome, back in business. I went back to the Holiday Inn Express 20 min down the road and went to bed at about 6:45 since I was exhausted after pushing so hard to make this race.
Sunday morning I picked up the tires/wheels from Phil and mounted 'em up. I got out in the first practice session and took a few laps. Brake fade. Just enough to be a concern. I decided to pull in a lap early and let the brakes cool. Probably a result of non-race fluid in the car. Something I should not have assumed.
Qualifying, more brake fade. OK no problem right, I can brake early. But as I was out there lapping I realized that I was not really pulling on the H4 cars at all. The car was as slow as I thought. And as soon as we got to the turns they were eating me alive. When I got the qualifying results I was literally only about a half second faster than I was with the stock Geeser a year or so ago. I was 3 seconds off the H4 pace. Oh well.
Race time comes around and of course everythone walked away from me. I was able to take 2 seconds off my lap time but that was in the opening laps when I still had some brakes. I could have pushed it because the fade didn't seem to get much worse but there was no point in it really.
I ended up finishing the race 2 laps down on the leaders. Towards the end of the race the engine started acting strange and of course the Check Engine light came on. I'll have to check the code sometime this week/weekend.
So now I know where the car stands. I am not taking it back out until I can either get another block, engine, or rebuild this one. I'll also upgrade to the full-on race suspension in that time and do some preventative maintenance (not the least of which being replacing damned near stripped wheel studs).
Its been tough but I am undeterred. I just have more work to do before I do battle once again.
