About 245 degrees f measured from the sump with the outside temp in the 70's.

I wouldnt worry about a cooler then.. unless temps are pegged when its really hot out. 245 is just getting warmed up Wink

Anything above 240 in the sump is to hot. The sump is where the oil is the coolest. It will be much hotter in other locations. I've heard of people seeing up towards 300, which is way to hot.

The sump is the hottest location.

Who told you anything over 240 is too hot?

From searching on a forum. I actually think the 240 I was quoting was from when this particular person was using a smaller cooler. I have read about the temp being as high as 300. I have also read in multiple places that the sump is the coolest. Why do you say the sump is the hottest?

Because it is.... The other popular place to take oil temp from is from the main oil galley (through a plug or off a sandwich plate between the filter and the block) and it will read a few deg lower.

300 is too high, IMO, but if you hit 300 deg on your oil temp you wont have a spontaneous destruction of your motor if you're using a good synthetic. Get it on track and see where you are before spending a ton of $$. Dont believe everything you read on the interweb - there are just too many variables.

From what I have read its just the opposite. I don't believe everything I read, but when every single person confirms that it runs high oil temps, it seems foolish to wait and find out on my own. I don't need to hit myself in the head with a hammer to know it hurts.

How many is "every single person"?

What kind of use is those cars seeing? What is your plans for the car? Did they have other mods? Is their A/C condensor still in? Is yours? What kind of gauge did they have and where was it mounted?

Thats the kind of things I'm getting at - its too easy to float misinformation on the web, because a bunch of know-nothing jackasses will just parrot off what they think is the correct answer when they have no personal knowledge or experience with it themselves.

Its pretty well known ITR motors run hot on oil at the track - but its also well known that they wont blow up either as long as you change the oil frequently and use a good synthetic.

About 5. Track use. weekend warrior. yes. yes. yes. the ones I know of used vdo, mounted in the oil pan like mine. I havnt heard of any VE's blowing up at the track yet. When the temps get to hot you just back off.

Here are some threads on oil temps I found

Heh...

Quote:3) At a location where the oil that is draining back out of the engine (head or heads) collects and is most likely to indicate max oil temp.

Quote:Anything that's in the pan has seen its way through the engine and is way hot.

Anyways, trying to get to the bottom of all of this mess now that I'm home and have some time to dig into it, I turn to my favorite 'oil spot' Smile This is a no-bs all tech oil discussion board, pretty neat stuff if you have the time to read.

Turned up a few tidbits of info

This was probably the most concrete piece of evidence
