FS: 1987 BMW 325 - Senor_Taylor - 11-28-2018

I wouldn't say this hurts me much ever since my cars' prices reflect the condition.

It's not my intention to use reverse psychology here either.

However, this time, it was at play a little. This person definitely prided themselves on being able to get a good deal and fix anything. They continually talked about things they had fixed, the shop they had access to, and how many cars they own. Every thing I said was met with a counter point.

- This will need a timing belt
"Oh, I can knock that out quickly"

- the power steering doesn't work at idle
"None of my cars have PS anyway!"

- it needs cosmetic stuff
"This car looks better than my others! I want a project anyway!"

After a while, I actually told him he was a terrible buyer since he was taking everything I was saying and continually talking about how much he wanted it. He had already told me on the phone he would pay asking price.

Honestly he may have just been flaunting his money. Who knows.

Yes I've lost money before. Yes, I could make more money when I sell cars. No, it's not worth being dishonest.

He locked his keys for his car and the e30 in his car after we signed the paperwork and I offered to drive him an hour round trip to get his spare.

FWIW, I'm with Taylor on this one. When I sold my Saab, I detailed all the things that were not obvious because I like to act in good faith. The buyer wasn't unfamiliar with fixing cars and actually wanted it more because I was so transparent.

Agreed, I was hyper transparent with all of my car sales including the Jag and it worked in my favor.  Being a salesperson by trade though, I wouldn't say I tried to talk any potential buyers out of a sale ha.  It was more that the transparency gave them a comfort level that I knew what I was talking about and cared for the car.

I take the same approach when I sell a watch so that there are no surprises.

Your sales tactics are severely flawed.
Helps me sleep better at night. I don't want to sell a car to someone knowing something is wrong with it and not telling them.

They're buying a 41 year old BMW.  They get what they get.

Old BMW? I tell them any major issues then “it’s an old bmw”. I try not to feel guilty because shit will fail that is not my fault. It could fail tomorrow, it could fail in 10 years.

I gave up feeling too guilty on past cars after the asshat on my gts2 race car tried to get me to pay for a headgasket. After talking on the phone for half an hour he finally relates that he left the car on without the fan switch on while he went to the bathroom and ended up talking to friends for 15 minutes. Water pouring past the radiator cap but he thought it was “fine”. Then got pissed I wouldn’t stand behind it.

An appliance car or “stock” car like Lee’s Jag? Well yeah everything should work; it’s too new to have BS.
