RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - ScottyB - 02-14-2018 its only 8:30 in the morning, i can't deal with ///M gussets and air jacks at a time like this, its gonna melt my face. GTBrandon Wrote:I'm not gonna lie all this has made me want to do besides see you out at VIR in March, is to well..do it all myself in some manner. we've had a number of MM alum that went from students to racers, we'll have to make sure more incoming members know that. its one of the things that sets this club apart from a lot of the other collegiate car clubs...motorsports is baked into the name and our people get after it. you have a huge knowledge base here when you want to pursue it. Scotty is right you know. I kind of miss the days where we had like 3-4 MMers HPDEing with 1 or 2 racing. Just seems like Jake and I racing nowadays and others being like "I cant afford it". Somehow we lost Sean Schutte to the other side of the paddock and Zach Gordon is too busy working! Taylor is just doing his think with broken cars, and Brandon has too expensive of vehicles ![]() That said if he picks up that Boxster S, I have a never ending supply of 50% race pads for him to burn up. Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - Senor_Taylor - 02-14-2018 I'll be there soon, don't worry. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - Jake - 02-14-2018 I suspect the Cockster will be out in full force. It's been tough to get a lot of people out for more than Hyperdrives in the last bunch of years. I know there is the option of "work two, drive one" but for whatever reason, not many are interested in working with track time as the reward. We'll have Ryan back out this year too, with his fancypants NC Miata. Should be you and me racing, Ryan/Zach/Brandon/Taylor all in various forms of HPDE, Maeng instructing, and maybe some other students out for at least Hyperdrives. Not the worst crew although I'd hope to see it expand more. Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - rherold9 - 02-14-2018 I'll be pushing for TT5 by end of year if I can get comfortable enough with the car Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - Goodspeed - 02-14-2018 If it helps I have a huge boner for one of these and I kinda want to build a track car next so see y'all in 2030??
RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - GTBrandon - 02-14-2018 I will 100% take you up on that offer of the racepads. I never understood why students don't get hyped around the idea of being in a crowd of alum who are actually at that track RACING, not just hard parking. Easy to make excuses, but much more fun to suck it up and get out on track. I think what did it for me was my first ride along, it was insane and I had a blast, second ride along was more, "Meh, I'd rather be doing this myself." The whole reason for buying the Boxster was to have a light, manual, rwd car that I could justify putting on the track compared to the GT. You know damn well I'm going to be out there this season, especially working grid for the "2 for 1 deal". Probably won't drive March but it will be my second weekend for credits, so I'll be ready after that. Might just have to do a hyperdrive honestly being so excited with this new car, but we'll see. Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - JPolen01 - 02-14-2018 Can the boxster go on track without a rollbar? Does it have a stock rollbar? Yup, has passive rollover protection with top down. One reason besides price for not going with 911 cabriolet as it would need a cage Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - D_Eclipse9916 - 02-14-2018 With your new job, no e46 M3? I wanted a convertible and also thought it would be cool to rock the crest for a while. Rest assured when finances are in order, 330ci will be a Craigslist adventure for me thanks to Jake barraging me with suitable listings. RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - rherold9 - 02-14-2018 Mmm coxter Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - Gordonovski - 02-15-2018 Yeah, I'm trying to get out on track more this year. Inspired now that I have a job and some decent income. We'll see how it goes Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - *insertusernamehere* - 02-15-2018 I'm with Goodspeed. See y'all in 2030!
Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - D_Eclipse9916 - 03-01-2018 Finally back from the Body Shop! Had some fun "driving it" from the bodyshop back to MachV being towed behind a golf kart on public roads. Got some fun looks (and a honk). ![]() We picked it up Tuesday night and was able to knock a couple hours worth of work out. -Dropped the rear suspension as a unit and welded up the RTAB (what failed on my previous car) ![]() ![]() -Mocked up the brake lines to the rear. -Assembled the front suspension and brakes. What a fiasco! When I replaced the rear wheel bearings, it turned out the car had 325i rear trailing arms, which require different wheel bearings than 330i (and then M3 has different ones too). Well based on this information, I had assumed the front spindles were 325i, and since 325i and 330i were interchangeable, I got new ones since I was concerned about the spindles being straight. First try: Swap wheel bearings on new(ish) 330i spindles. Doesn't fit AKG Control Arms made for 330i...what? Measure old arms and they have larger hole. Did I get 325i spindles? Do some research and nothing makes sense. 2nd try: Start researching AKG arms, they are made for non-M, everything should fit. Did I get some random 325i low production spindles? 3rd try: reem out new spindles, but measure different thickness for reinforcement of low control arm and calipers, make me nervous. I take a quick look wondering how thick the M3 spindles are off the car and its surprisingly similiar...Wait a minute. These look familiar.... Measure out and turns out TCKline used M3 front spindles. Okay well my AKG arms are made for Non-M spindles and so are the brakes..or so I thought. Brakes bolt up and control arms bolt up. Yes the control arms made for Non-M dont fit the non-M but miraculously fit M3 spindles (our luck/not luck?) *Sigh* So basically we assemble it all together after figuring out that mess that ended up eating our entire night. ![]() Closing up shop, oh look who's here too?

RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - .RJ - 03-01-2018 how does your e46 m3 street car have 325/328 parts? Turns out the “325i race car had M3 spindles” instead of non-M like the rear suspension so my replacement non-M did not work. And AKGs non-M control arms fit M3 spindles not Non-M RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - .RJ - 03-01-2018 my head a splode RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - rherold9 - 03-01-2018 (03-01-2018, 01:09 PM)D_Eclipse9916 Wrote: Serious question, how much is your Mom in disbelief that this was her car now?? Looks mighty proper now. Those ///M gussets have me all kinds of hot and bothered Edit: Are they any other weaker points in the chassis or suspension that people know about that could need to be reinforced? Front shock tower? Front low arm into subframe? Etc? |
