A 4Runner has never been considered "plush" - you got one with some nice options but they didn't design it to be nice to ride in. Some friends have a brand new 4Runner Limited(? the loaded one) and it rides poorly compared to like, a Highlander of similar size. That's the price you pay for more off-road capability.

I hope you got a matching 5th spare. If you have to drive on the regular spare you could cause damage to the 4WD system.

These tires are stock size, just the tread blocks make them a little bigger diameter. The spare has lots of tread and would have a negligible affect on the AWD with open diffs. Plus, I wouldn't ride around on the spare for long. Don't worry.

Is it possible to pass inspection (No emissions since the car is registered back home) with a crack in my header? You can hear the obvious ticking noise coming from it, but it doesn't smell unless you're WOT with the windows down and there's no CEL. I'd really rather not drop 400-1000 on a new header/cat for it if I can avoid it.

If they aren't doing emissions how will they know the header of cracked? Isn't this a safety inspection? I don't see how that compromises safety. Virginia is weird.

I'm fairly certain that they do a visual inspection of the exhaust for cats. You can hear the exhaust leak, so by rule of association, I would conclude they would hear a leak before the cat and fail me.
At least that's my fear.

I mean why don't you just try to get it inspected and if it passes it passes and if it doesn't you replace the header?
I don't remember any inspection stations in VA ever looking directly at my headers or exhaust. They only ever checked for CELs and I MAYBE had a sniffer test at some point? Maybe that would be different if there were aftermarket exhaust components but I'm sure you are fine man.

I don't want to put myself on a time crunch like that. If I fail, then I have to get the header installed in less than 30 days or however long the rejection lasts. It's not a huge deal, but I'd like a little idea of what's in store.

A visual test for a cat and noticing a crack in a header and a slight noise are totally different things. Didn't dj go the other day and when his car wouldn't read the guy told him his ECU could be fried? Come on man you're over thinking this. Go try it and see what happens.

From the inspection manual:
19VAC30-70-300. Muffler, exhaust system and trailer venting.
A. Flexible tubing may be used anywhere in the exhaust system.
B. Inspection of exhaust system does not concern noise level.
C. Inspect for and reject if:
1. There is any leakage of exhaust gases at any point in the system. Do not reject "built-in" drain holes in muffler or tailpipe.
2 .A muffler or catalytic converter has been repaired in any manner.
3.Tailpipe opening is mashed or pinched.
4. Any components of the exhaust system are not properly secured. Brackets or Hangers are loose, broken, or missing.
5. The exhaust system fails to discharge the exhaust to the rear or sides of the passenger and trunk compartment of passenger vehicles.
6. The exhaust system fails to discharge the exhaust to the rear or sides of the passenger compartment that is designed for and normally used for the driver and passengers of a property-carrying vehicle.
If they notice it, it's a failure.

Its up to chance whether or not they find the crack. If they do yes it will fail. All exhaust gases have to exit at the rear of the vehicle.

Also, I'm about 95% sure you're not actually allowed to drive on a rejection sticker at all in VA. There isn't a grace period to fix things where you can legally drive a vehicle that's considered "unsafe".

I managed to get a slammed STi with a fully built engine, dark tint, an open dump tube and fully catless exhaust spitting blue flames out the back inspected for a few years in VA. I'm pretty sure you can find a way to get a header crack passed.

Actually it does include a grace period for rejection stickers.
I drove my C5 Z06 for almost 2 years.....with no inspection sticker at all.

Yeah I think you get 14-days to fix and have it re-inspected if you fail, and you can still drive it then. The E36 has earned a pink sticker once or twice.
The little shop built onto the Sunoco by the Giant near my house will probably pass it.

I hardly doubt they are going to fail you for that. Unless it's obvious your muffler fell off or there is a gaping hole in your exhaust you'll be fine.

If a shop thinks they can make money off of you, they'll try. Don't underestimate them.
Taylor, with the hood up and someone under hood listening..hold a rag over the exhaust tip. How loud/pronounced is the leak now? I know a few guys with inspector licenses and that is the quick way they check for leaks with the car on a lift.
