I don't know if its the same part as on N52 engines, but I've heard they usually fail between 60k - 90k. I got 80k out of mine.

I would just like to point out my Corolla's water pump has 140k miles on it and costs $22 to $42 on Rockauto. Still works great though, so no need to replace. Carry on with your German love fest.

Yeah all the German cars and JDM cars and domestic cars AND EVERY GOD DAMN CAR BLOWS ITS COOLING SYSTEM TO SHIT. Wanna know how I know? I sell about 1000 water pumps and tstat and every god damn day for every kind of car. A woman WALKED to my store cause her COROLLA was overheating and shut off with her on the side of the road. I don't want to hear it. It's a matter of time before your WP shits the bed. All cars need to service their WP by 100k afaic.

A+ rant. Would read again. But you're wrong. My old Accord had 162k on it and never once needed cooling system work. BMWs are notorious for their delicate cooling systems. That being said if I want a bmw I'm not going to drive a corolla because it's water pump is bullet proof. That logic is not even logic.

Yeah and my Accord had the same mileage and broke a coolant hose and 2 weeks later leaked from the water pump and for the entire time I owned the car leaked oil from everywhere.

Newsflash: Old cars cost money to maintain....

... but a $600 water pump shouldnt fail at 30k miles, either.

Yeah, my buddy went through 3 or 4 dealer installed OE water pumps on his ('14? I think) GTI before 60k. Also not normal.

Yeah I get that 30k miles is ridiculous. My entire point being don't use your damn corolla as some holy piece of example they still break too and they're also boring as all fuck so I don't see the comparison. I'm salty as hell this morning.

All cars break... but your average American / Japanese coolant system breaks less than the glass and otter blood design that seems to be installed in the average BMW. There is something to be said about simplistic designs that work... and work... and work. BMW decided it was smart to install plastic electric powered pumps that cost $500 and last 60k miles, the Japanese installed all-metal belt driven pumps that cost $50 and last 150k miles. Why? Tons of high HP cars use belt driven pumps... the weight savings are minuscule....

And yes, a Corolla is a "boring" car to drive, but it's also incredibly fun in that you can beat the shit out of it all the time and not care about door dings, maintenance, repairs, speed bumps, shifting in traffic. It will even AutoX with 4 people in it in a pinch. I have put less than $100 of maintenance (outside of tires/brakes/oil) into the car over 140k miles. The largest thing that has broken to date is a piece of plastic trim on the roof drop rail. And if I want to go faster, I have 2 cars that meet that need.

Edit: I'm just going to say the main reason I didn't get a Z4 is stupid shit like this pump argument. Shouldn't fail like it does but you know German car tax for you. Other than stupid stuff like that BMWs are fun cars. But, this pump argument is great though, please do continue.

Totally understandable. However I will question your definition of "fun", but whatever you have to tell yourself to drive a corolla Wink

I actually sold it three months after the warranty expired precisely because I didn't want that first out-of-warranty repair.

The Mini's warranty expires in April, I think. That's why I'm shopping GTIs. 8)
