I haven't read the other pages of replies. I'll share this:
I have a 16" wood deck trailer build on a very good steel frame. I like it due to its versatility. I built 3.5' removable wooden sides for it and get a TON of utility from that. Mulch, fallen trees and other yard debris, etc.
I pressure wash and treat it every 2 years and the wood looks great. The trailer is 14 years old.

My aluminum ATC enclosed trailer is pretty awesome too. Weighs 2300lbs empty

Ours is just a single axle utility trailer though, not a car trailer.

If I was going back to open trailer I would buy aluminum, no worries about repainting it, good resale value, and typically everything else is better built.

So trailer brakes...is there much advantage having brakes on both axles vs. just on one axle? I see a lot more 1 axle vs. 2 axle brake trailers, but I wanted some opinions. My truck already has a trailer brake controller.

Mine has 'em on both. Not sure of the advantage/disadvantage beyond "when I want this mofo to stop, I want it to stop NOW."
I've had a few close calls where people cut me off or otherwise demanded a lot of stopping power. More brakes is more better. Your TBC built in to the truck won't care either way, it sends the same signal to each trailer brake no matter what.

I suggest 2 axle, brakes on a all 4 puny trailer tires instead of all braking force on 2 puny trailer tires.
