So it's been about 14 months and 4,800 miles since we bought this machine.

I really, really like this car. People that see pictures say the seats look uncomfortable, but neither myself nor anyone else have had any comfort issues. I'm not auto-x the thing, so lateral support doesn't seem to be that big of a deal. If I had one complaint, it would be that the brake pedal feels too far to the left. Maybe it's cause I have short legs and like to sit pretty far back, but keeping my foot on the brake in traffic is not a natural position. On highways, which it doesn't see very often, the thing eats miles.

Last weekend it carried three adult males and camping gear without issues. Even fully loaded, it was pretty easy to jump on the gas and pass marginally slower vehicles in the opposite lane of travel. Cruising at 80, moderately aggressive driving, and climbing a few mountain ranges netted us ~27 mpg fully loaded (probably 4600 lbs). The shocks are perfect for every day driving, but I could definitely tell the ass end was fully loaded on our trip. One of my passengers drove the last 2.5 hours of our return and repeatedly commented about how low the car is and that "it's like driving my Mini." The car definitely feels longer than the GTI, but it feels much smaller in the city than one would expect - likely due to ride height.

It's been in the shop once, for an oil change, and I had them look at a squealing rear brake (when cold). There was build up on the rotor, so they removed it and ground the pads up a bit on both rears - no charge - thanks CPO! Other than that, there have been no issues... other than those caused by human error - like the wife scrapping bushes down one side when I asked her to pull to the side of the road so we could look something up on the internet. There were some pretty obvious scuffs in the clear coat that I never got around to fixing, because manual labor.

The car was pretty heinous after camping and we're making a switch from infant to toddler car seat, so I had the car heavily detailed inside and out yesterday with quality results (see pics). This came after the 500 mile road trip took us through central Washington, which is apparently bug country. I didn't think to snap a before picture, but there were serious bug guts that needed to be addressed. The detail shop actually commented they wish they took a before picture too. :lol:

I ended up buying a rooftop box, after much consternation. We're headed to the Oregon coast for vacation in a week and there's no way we're going to fit the things we need in the car with an toddler seat smack dab in the middle of the back seat. I think we could manage if I didn't mind packing things around my kid, but I don't want them to become projectiles in an accident. It's going on the car this weekend in prep for our trip; I'll post pictures once that's done.

Glad you updated.

This is at the top of my list for replacing the prius.

I was surprised that these have the features they do and can be had for $25k ish with 50k miles.

Just need to find an M Sport package.

Almost forgot... the GPS is kinda laughable, as far as accuracy is concerned. I'm not a fan of Waze, but Google Maps blows the thing away. I could probably update the maps, but that sounds like money and effort for something my phone already does. I will use the OEM GPS as much as possible because navigation on the heads up display is really nice, but I almost always cross reference it against GMaps.

Also, the door locks being high on the center console is annoying because you're usually out of the car before you remember you need to unlock the back doors to get your kid out.

Are you sure you don't get map updates for free for a certain time period?

Mazda gives us map updates for the first 3 years for Free99. May be worth looking into.

I don't even think it's a map update issue. I mean, I'm sure there are things that aren't perfect, but it seems more like it has a hard time calculating an accurate fastest route. Seattle geography dictates that a lot of routes are very indirect and the BMW nav usually picks a different way than GMaps. Traffic is usually worse on the route it picks, even though live traffic is part of the package.

Weird, but I experience the same in the Prius, which still has the 2010 map disc, along with traffic updates, and the Mazda, which gets live traffic and new map updates every quarter.

It's all in the programming I guess and not the actual map updates.

You sure it doesn't have a firmware update available?

The Mazda has been noticeably better with applying live traffic route changes after the latest firmware update.

I am sure of nothing, other than GMaps is more reliable for the best route. :lol:

There was a guy on the E90 and E82 forums that would put the annual map update online to download for free, and sell the activation code for $50. Far cheaper than the dealership would charge. My 128i was beyond any sort of free update period and I updated it from the original 2009 maps to 2015 at the time.

Routing was still a bit odd at times but I appreciated having the latest road info. BMW uses Navteq for their maps/routing which is the same as many other OEMs.

The transition to a family hauler is deepening. The kid is moving from an infant to a convertible seat, so that means we're losing quite a bit of space in the back seat. We got a bear of a car seat and it fits pretty well, even with the driver seat as far back as I like it. It's hard to see, but the seats really aren't anywhere near touching. Two rear facing seats would be more of an issue, but there's zero problem fitting one kid and riding comfortably.

We're going on a road trip soon, so I finally pulled the trigger on the roof box. I'm not comfortable putting things in the back seat only to become missiles in an accident, so we're somewhat limited on cargo space. We've gone away using only trunk space to get us to the airport, but there are more things to carry when you're taking an infant to the outdoors for a week (e.g. hiking backpack). I found a well reviewed local shop and tapped the shit out of the easy button. I probably overbought and/or overpaid, but I actually wanted customer service and to be somewhat future proof on a thing like this. I'm really kinda geeking out on how the wagon looks with it on. I'll write up some more about how it performs in a few weeks, after our trip.

That looks really, really good! Did bmw make a pet barrier for those? I had one in our FXT, not so much for the dog but more to prevent exactly what you mentioned with the cargo missiles.

It comes stock, along with a cargo cover. Both are sitting in my garage because they take up unnecessary space in the car. Good point about using it for cargo missles... may have to consider putting ours back in for the trip.
