Going to look at this on Monday. No, there is no service history. Yes, it is a long nose crank. Yes, I don't plan to pay asking price. Commence bashing.

As long as there aren't any tire walls on 81, I should be fine.

Just don't take a turn on 81 too wide

All original parts under the hood? Front bumper replaced? Overspray everywhere? What could go wrong?

How can you tell the bumper was replaced? Where is the overspray? I didn't notice.

Edit: Is the over spray on the intake tubes and stuff? Kind of hard to see. I'm not particularly concerned about cosmetic stuff (See Miata 1.0).

That also does not look like a stock Radiator.

Re: WTB: Michelle The Miata's Replacement - Senor_Taylor - 06-04-2016

This seems like a sure thing, but it's 5 hours from Harrisonburg...

It turns out my house in lynchburg is exactly halfway between JMU and there. I could drive to lynchburg after work, catch a ride down to raleigh to look at this thing, then (if bought) drive it back to lynchburg and leave it, spend the night, and drive back tuesday morning in time for my night shift.

Edit:

Nevermind, it's sold.

BUT ITS CUTE AND FUN!!!

there are lots of miatas out there, and you're already adding $XXX buying in the convertible season. why not just wait until it gets colder?

Re: WTB: Michelle The Miata's Replacement - Senor_Taylor - 06-05-2016

Found one today for 4 with a hard top and a roll bar and low mileage. Was going early tomorrow to look in Maryland and within an hour he told me it was already sold. Shit is crazy

I don't want to buy a car in the middle of school year in case I need to work on it.

Not on this car:

Both front fenders have been replaced on this one, it's missing the VIN tags, I would assume the hood too....

So you're going to pay $xxx more for the same car that'll still need repairs while you're trying to work as many shifts as you can get all summer?

Stop trying to find reasons you need to buy a car this week. Have patience, put some feelers out there, cruise the back lines of some local dealerships after work to try and find diamond in the rough. Enjoy the hunt. Don't spend too much money on a shitty example just because it's peak convertible season and you think there is a run on the market, trust me Miatas aren't going anywhere.

Re: WTB: Michelle The Miata's Replacement - Senor_Taylor - 06-06-2016

Alright... alright...

Miata's have a habit of finding me, what exactly are you looking for and what is your budget?

He's right. At this point they've literally made over a 1,000,000 of them, they aren't rare.

Re: WTB: Michelle The Miata's Replacement - Senor_Taylor - 06-07-2016

I agree that I may have jumped the gun a bit.

Right now, I don't think I'll seriously start looking until around July 4th, unless something great pops up. At that point, my budget may go up, but I doubt it would much. I'd like to go back to school with a couple grand wiggle room.

What I'm looking for on this second trip on the crazy train:

Price: $4000 or under. $3000 preferred.

< 150,000 miles

Paint does not need to be perfect. I'd prefer the entire car to be no more than 1 color. Not a show car, but I don't want something I'll need to be embarrassed by.

Long nose crank, preferably 92+ so it has a trunk release lever.

No airbag light, CEL, or other lights. I'd like to be able to pass inspection as soon as I buy it.

I'd prefer to not replace a top as soon as I buy it.

Interior features DO NOT matter. Power windows and stuff would be a plus, but I like crank windows all the same. Cloth seats are fine, don't need headrest speakers.

A/C is a must. P/S is a optional, Radio is a must

Stock or close to stock. "Acceptable" mods are newer Miata wheels or actually decent wheels for tracking, NASA approved roll bar, race beat or comparable intake, foamectomy, decent exhaust (not really keen on straight pipe). This is very important. I want to make the car my own. I don't want anything with aftermarket head lights, or craptastic lowering springs.

Hardtop is a plus, but not needed

Open diff is fine

Service history is nice, but again, not a deal breaker. These cars are old so you can't expect everything.

WP/TB service is nice, but not important unless it's super high mileage and has clearly never been done (more indicative of bad owners)

Clutch replaced at some point is a plus, same with CAS seal, radiator, window regulators, etc. Not a deal breaker.

In all, I don't want the coolest or best looking miata. I want the most solid stock DD / trackable miata out there with a 20 foot paint job.

Re: WTB: Michelle The Miata's Replacement - Scott - 06-08-2016

Senor_Taylor Wrote:Long nose crank.
What's wrong with the short nose? All them with an issue have broken already, and as long as you don't mess up the key, they are fine (which can happen on any of them, the only crank nose failure I've ever had was on a '94 that someone messed with....). They actually make more power and are preferred by the 1.6 racers and they are also lighter..... Plus you can put antique tags on it and not have to get it inspected.

Senor_Taylor Wrote:preferably 92+ so it has a trunk release lever.

That was actually a mid year '91 change, as well as the SNC to LNC swap.

Senor_Taylor Wrote:A/C is a must. P/S is a optional, Radio is a must.

If it has A/C, it'll have P/S

< 150,000 miles.

Spend a little more upfront and get an already built car with the mods you want already done. You will quickly spend several grand on the roll bar, suspension, brakes, etc.... You should be able to get a "built" car in the $4500-5000 range with a hard top too.

Re: WTB: Michelle The Miata's Replacement - davej - 06-08-2016

if you don't *need* it right away, why not sit on it for a while, save a few more bucks and pick up the search again when the convertible season is over? Maybe even find a built-ish track car when the season ends?

Your logic, it does not belong here.

Re: WTB: Michelle The Miata's Replacement - Senor_Taylor - 06-08-2016

Dave, nobody "needs" anything. Of course I don't need a Miata. I want a Miata. I'd obviously want one to drive during my last summer of freedom ever.
That said. I'm going to be continually looking all summer, but I'll wait until the first week of July to really start my search. I've got a lot going on until then. After that, I should have a decent safety net built up and I can just drop everything to look at any decent one I find. I want to have it at least a few weeks before I need to drive it back to JMU in the fall so I can make sure it's sorted before I get too busy.

If I find one that is too good of a deal to pass up before then, I see no reason not to hop on it.

Senor_Taylor Wrote:my last summer of freedom ever.

I know, I know, college and nostalgia and freedom and stuff.

But you know what's also freeing? Being paid by my company to take many days off and having the money to go on nicer trips.

There's still summertime freedom in convertibles after you graduate (like mine, when it runs!), it's just different and for the most part more enjoyable.

And money for race cars.... If I take off days during the week for an event, it's like I'm getting paid to go race.

Agreed.
