I think the reason the VMRs look marginally better than than the other options are because the spokes are spaced out slightly more so it looks less crowded. That said, I still think that style of wheel belongs on an SUV like salsa belongs on ice cream.

And while I'm sure ADV.1 are prolly $$$, Niche makes a lot of similar wheels for less. I think those look like the Essen. I've been eyeing either the Essen or Lucerne for SUV duty.

Yeah ADV's are beautiful but you're gonna end up spending well over $1000 per wheel in most cases. For the supercar guy who wants to accessorize.

(My saltiness comes from a "friend" I have - mostly an acquaintance - who has a new M6 and paid several shops to mod it all to hell and back, including ADV.1 wheels - and claims "he" built and modded the car, when in fact he just financed it)

I don't understand what this recent phenomenon of people bragging about "built not bought" is all about. If someone wants to pay a shop to do all the work, whatever, it's his money. But don't turn around and claim that you busted your knuckles to put everything on the car.

Even then, people who actual install parts themselves, you still haven't built anything. Unless you actually rebuilt your engine yourself, bent pipe and welded your own cage, or laid down carbon fiber to build your splitter you haven't "built" anything. You've installed, yes, and I can see how that's a source of pride but building something means something totally different to me.

"Built not bought" Really? You've got access to an engineering production facility where you assembled your own turbo and intercooler? You CNC'ed those cams yourself?

That's the main beef I have. I guess it goes along with the supercar thread. If you've got the coin to spend on other people doing the work for you, go for it. But I think I'd have a hard time taking pride in something that, while it's 100% "cool," I didn't have any real hand in putting together.

I think the built not bought argument is dumb. If you try and pass off someone else's work as your own, then yes you are a liar and a loser. But if you have money to spend to have someone else put together your idea, then go for it. Some people don't have the time or desire to turn wrenches but they can still be passionate about cars and modifying them. Just because you don't take pride unless you turn a wrench doesn't mean everyone else feels the same way.

A manufacturer is doing almost all of the engineering and design, stamping steel, welding seams, painting bodies, and building at least some components in house. If an enthusiast welded together his own tube-frame chassis or made something out of carbon fiber then sourced the other parts, then they could say 'built not bought'. So maybe a Formula SAE team could say "built not bought". Even someone who rebuilt their own engine can claim 'built not bought' status. Hmm, maybe I should start a Built Not Bought Bureau to give people official inspections and a seal of authenticity for their modified cars.

I guess since I don't melt down my own aluminum block I didn't actually "build the motor".

You are confusing the annoyance of guys who say they "built the car" by having someone else do the work, just swiping a credit card vs the guy who disassembles and builds back up a car. Significantly modifying a car is a car build in my opinion.

The BNBB does not officially recognize your definition of built. If you wish to gain certification for the fabrication of engine blocks you need to consult CAMFRGD (CAst Milled or Forged to Regulations by Gerald's Design).

Realisticallty I'm talking about the guy who put an I/H/E on his car and swapped some springs who jumps on Speedhunter to shit on someone else's car because he didn't "build it" himself. I mean, if you did an engine swap by the sweat of your brow or welded things yourself or basically did significant modifications beyond bolt-ons then I would agree someone built something. It just seems to me that a lot of people talking bout "built not bought" that really haven't done much of anything beyond bolt-ons.

And even then it seems silly anyway because as Jon said, just because someone doesn't care to wrench on something themselves doesn't make them any less of an enthusiast.
