Yeah, 3,400 with me in it (180 lbs) and 3/4 tank of fuel is not all bad, I suppose. I think my M3 was within 20 lbs of that when it had a full interior under the same circumstances... and the 128 has more airbags (heavy) and two 8" subwoofers (heavy) compared to the E36.

Nice man! Cool seeing you huck your DD around the track. I found an old comparo mag in my man cave bathroom stack that lined up the 1M with the Evora and the Cayman S or something and I was impressed to see it turn 0-60 numbers not too far off of my car. It sounds like with more power and a better suspension / tire setup it would be pretty quick on the track.

Yeah, the 1M is pretty quick! It's largely a 135i with bolt-ons and a mechanical LSD. The 128 is slower in a straight line but handles alright for what it is. I'd definitely ask for suspension/tires before I bothered with power... as a track car. For the street, gimme dat X3 3.0si intake manifold and 40 more hp, please :thumbup:

I rode in a modded 1M on track a while back and that was one of the craziest cars I've ever ridden in. It was the first time he had run it on that tune in cooler weather and it was overboosting pretty badly, so he was only running it at 2/3rd throttle and we still had absolutely no issues getting to 145 on Summit.
It really is a shame that it was such a low production run car, if they had made more of them and they were depreciating like a normal M car, I would probably be squirreling away my pennies to buy one some day. It sounds like the M2 won't be a limited production run, so maybe in ....~2020 I'll be able to afford one.

It really does suck that there are so few of them. The maintenance wouldn't even be as bad as most M cars because like Jake said, its basically a 135i with a M3 LSD and M3 suspension pieces. The motors are barely different physically. The only real difference is a tune.
It would have been such an awesome car if there were more than 1000 of them.

I dunno, you can make one if you really want - or make a 135i that's faster and as capable, if not moreso.

Did some work this weekend - as I'm about to cross 50k miles, I figured I should change some fluids and things. Particularly given that the car was a lease (who knows how much it was maintained... in theory, always on time, but...) and regardless, "BMW Lifetime" fluids are anything but.
So, it got...
* Oil change - 7 qts of Motul 5W40 Synthetic
* Brake fluid - ATE DOT 4
* Transmission fluid - Redline D4 ATF
* Spark plugs
* Cabin air filter
* Engine air filter
I have new diff fluid (Redline 75W90) but the diff only has a fill plug, not a drain plug. So, I need to buy a pump of some sort that will let me drain the old fluid.
Also removed the Clutch Delay Valve and now the car drives like you'd expect, with clutch engagement predictable and easy to master. It was really, really difficult to drive smoothly before, and the change is so noticeable. Takes all of five minutes to remove.
The new transmission fluid made the gearbox a bit smoother which is also a good thing. The old fluid was really nasty (very dark in color) and every so often I'd have a hard time getting in 1st at a red light. That seems to have gone away.
So, money well spent on this thing. Still love driving it. :thumbup:

I've been thinking about running D4 ATF in mine to get rid of that second gear notchiness. I know some people on the forums run it, but it still makes me nervous running ATF in a manual.

It's what they recommend. I've had it in the M3 as well, everything feels good there and has for the ~4 months I've run it.

BMW has been running D4 ATF in it's manual transmissions since the beginning of time. No worries. :thumbup:
(uses Redline D4 ATF in the race car trans).

hmmm, I wonder if the same stuff is used for the xdrive system. I need to change the manual trans/rear diff fluid in the X3 but I'm not sure if it requires something different since its got xdrive.

I'm not sure... the 75W-90 fluid has been a differential "staple" for years on BMWs from what I know. But I would definitely look on XOutpost or somewhere to make sure before you do the X3 in case it's different. The owner's manual is, naturally, useless.
