So at dinner tonight with Thayer and a bunch of the MM boys we were talking about surfing Youtube to find funny videos that follow a theme. I've entertained myself for hours searching for "snowmobile crash"videos or "ghost ride fail" videos. Steve gave me the idea tonight to search for "I know my rights". This was the first hit:

Yeah but that's comparing one of the greatest rock bands of all time to not even one of the greatest rappers of right now. An apples to moldy oranges comparison if I ever saw one. Like comparing Beethoven to Coldplay.

That was probably my favorite find of the day. I mean, the worst music of that era still took skill to create - you had to play an instrument and/or be able to sing reasonably well without the aid of electric gizmos. I 'tubed that song (artfully titled "You a Stupid Hoe" - could you have guessed?) and wanted to bore a hole in my brain with a power drill to get the badness out :vomit:

True, the availability and cheapness of digital tools makes it much easier to make music with less talent these days. But the flip side of that is that there is much more diversity of music available today because the barriers to entry are lower.

Still, if you make the skill argument, you could also say, 'In 1875 you needed dozens of classically trained musicians to play in unison to play complex pieces of music. In 1975 you had only 4 or 5 guys strumming on some instruments for 5 minutes with a hook, and that's considered music. The worst piece of classical musical took an order of magnitude more talent to make than the best piece of rock...' Just sayin'.

Yeah, I love Zep, probably more than the next guy, they had amazing talent but comparing them to Niki Minaj is a really really terrible comparison.
