Re: Project RS - ScottyB - 11-18-2013 Street Tire 4WD season victory cinched! 2nd out of 5 in class 3rd out of 27 raw time local hotshoe (national stage rally competitor) came out in his tweaked STi street car instead of his prepped rally car for kicks and basically wrecked house on our class and/or the whole field, so i took a distant 2nd this time. had a great battle going with my Forester XT nemesis who was 2 points behind me in standings, but he DNF'ed in the afternoon session which basically handed me the win. course was stupid fast, "baseball diamond" sand over hardpack sandstone. sideways for miles all day. i coned at least half my runs, i just couldn't keep up with how much the car was sliding around. took 1200 pictures....none of myself of course. i'll post a few later. might even have some gopro footage to show thanks to a friend letting me borrow his. Re: Project RS - D_Eclipse9916 - 11-18-2013 Woo! congrats! Re: Project RS - PDenbigh - 11-18-2013 Nice! Congrats Scott!! Re: Project RS - Steve85 - 11-18-2013 Way to go Scotty!! Re: Project RS - *insertusernamehere* - 11-18-2013   Re: Project RS - ScottyB - 11-22-2013 so, a little followup. my buddy in the FozXT let me borrow his gopro and set it up for a hood mount. got to see just how sloppy some of my lines are...yeesh. there are many cases on dirt where you don't run a "grip" line for various reasons, but there are a number of places where i'm just reacting way too slow. funny thing is it felt great from the driver's seat at the time, but there's so much going on i just didn't realize that i was about 5 feet from the apex, haha. my 4th run of the morning session https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0IT_Ap3zQ8 right at the end i go waaaay off line and blast a cone in the face when i lock the brakes up in the silt on the side of the course. had i not done that it would have been probably within a second of the lead STi rather than 2 seconds behind +1 for a cone, for that particular run. ![]() so cool. apparently a real-deal Alltrac that was actually part of the Toyota press fleet (back when Toyota wasn't dead inside). something like only 80 were brought to to the US for that purpose, or so i'm told. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() NEMESSSIIIIISSSSSSS ![]() this poor thing blew a tie rod last event. this time? blew a different kind of rod...probably going to the crusher now.
Re: Project RS - Beej - 11-22-2013 Holy crap, that looks like a blast! I don't know if I'd have the heart to do it to a clean daily driver ( ), but that seriously looks like a lot of fun. Re: Project RS - ScottyB - 11-22-2013 co-drive!! that black sentra had 3 drivers, and the "dirtbomb" legacy had 2. rally people are generally completely chill and will let you drive at the drop of a hat. in fact, i took a local buddy to the last race, and not being a club member or anything was offering to drive the dirtbomb like it was nothing. just paid the entry fee ($35 for 8 runs + fun runs at the end of the day), got a loaner helmet, jumped in and ran. if you make it down from richmond sometime you've got a driver's seat in that car at least, and I'd offer mine too. I would make the trip for that. This just seems like it should be illegal for as much fun as you're having. Hey Scotty, how do you feel about three of us driving your Scoob? ![]() How do RWD cars typically do with this stuff? I could just leave the all-seasons on the M3 and try my hand at it. Fuck the paint. Re: Project RS - D_Eclipse9916 - 11-22-2013 Wdcr does them at summit all the time. That course is a bit rougher than what Scotty's looks like, I wouldn't do the m3 on the wdcr one. Re: Project RS - ScottyB - 11-26-2013 Jake Wrote:Hey Scotty, how do you feel about three of us driving your Scoob? hey listen, if 3 of you guys took time to come down and run with us I'm sure i could find a way to either get you into my car or someone else's. i'm technically not supposed to be letting other people drive my car as per wife rule 7H, Article J which states "you go and break your daily car and i'll rip your johnson off", but then again i'm 31, its mah body i do what i want, so trustworthy MM'ers will find a seat. i've been disheartened at the lack of RWD in our group. we had a hachi run with us earlier this season, and the guy that owns the tan forester above is actually picking up a miata for the 2014 season. we even had an SVT mustang run with us last year. the only "regular" RWD car we see is a VW bug. however every RWD car i've seen run has been slow. i don't think this has anything at all to do with the driveline...all those cars mentioned were either 1-time shows just to try rallyx out, or just old as shit and coming apart in the case of the bug. It's also a factor that there just aren't many guys that want to drive on dirt with 2WD, and fewer still happen to have RWD cars and can handle them sideways. frankly if you brought the M out, it would be an instant crowd favorite at the very least. i would have to think that after a few runs on all seasons you'd have enough of the physics worked out to be having a fun as hell time. tape the rockers up with painter's tape and screw some cheapo mud flaps on the rear if you're really bothered. the rest can be fixed with a good wash. i would love to see miatas, RX7's , 944, and stangs go at each other instead of all these damn SE-Rs
Re: Project RS - CaptainHenreh - 11-26-2013 Sounds like DJ's chump car needs some gravel tires. Re: Project RS - xvxax - 11-26-2013 There are probably as many RWD cars as AWD cars in the mid atlantic. Mostly old BMWs and FC RX7s. There are a few FWD cars but not many, and they all look painful to drive. FWD looks torturous in the dirt. If you're around the hood, come to a rally cross up at Summit Point. They have a bunch of space and the courses are pretty open and fun. There are a few people who rent seats for every event in that group. Re: Project RS - ScottyB - 11-26-2013 xvxax Wrote:If you're around the hood, come to a rally cross up at Summit Point i've heard of that venue and would love to take a shot at it. if things were to ever align that i was in the area during an event i'd totally do it. xvxax Wrote:FWD looks torturous in the dirt. its not as fun, since you're only *really* maintaining rotation under braking and have to play the wheelspin waiting game in a straight line. but, having traction over the front wheels and a lot less chassis weight matters to some degree because the street-tire 2WD guys are consistently in the top 10 and usually in the top 5 at our events. still, i'd have no interest in ever taking a front driver out there unless it was something wild. Re: Project RS - ScottyB - 12-06-2013 the only shot anyone gets of me all season....me in the process of completely blowing a turn  ![]() weeeeee Re: Project RS - ScottyB - 02-23-2014 so, this just happened...13 years in the making. ever since i joined MM in '01 and found out you could do this, its been a goal in life to make it happen. prepare for lots of mediocre gopro videos of my hamfisted driving on VIR North. ![]() would have loved to run VIR grand with you guys in a few weeks, but I had an opportunity to get a paid-for HPDE weekend through our local sports car club in return for some graphic work. i couldn't pass that up! Re: Project RS - JustinG - 02-23-2014 Not a bad trade! Good luck. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk Re: Project RS - ScottyB - 03-08-2014 got my race video setup all together, i'll let you guys know how it all works come April when i can do my first event. right now it consists of: - gopro HERO3 black (w/wifi) - gopro backpack battery - gopro suction mount - gopro 3.5mm mic adapter wire for external mic - DIY drilled case as a "skeleton" setup to allow for a 3.5mm audio cord to poke out the side of the case (the backpack battery provides a second case so you can do this for "free") - 3.5mm, 12ft. audio cord - Audio-Technica ATR-3350 Lavalier Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone i could have foregone the backpack battery, and depending on how you want to mount the mic you could lose the extension cord but that was only like $10 bucks so why not. everything came out to more than i wanted to spend in total, but i'm getting lazy now and just wanted a set and forget, long lasting thing that just works. there just isn't much out there to compete with gopro. btw, the wifi setup with the free phone app is fantastic and worth the price. i can preview the videos on my phone, and remote record/setup the camera from pretty far away. also, just know that some "kits" like the suction mount come with extra mounting arms and stuff, so by the time you get a HERO kit and a mount kit you end up with enough arm pieces to make some neat mounting arrangements without having to buy extra parts separately. the plan is to mount the ATR-3350 under the liscense plate near the exhaust but i may move it around if its getting buffeted. its a cheap mic but people seem to get good results from it. anything is better than the WHARRGARBL nonsense you get from the standard internal mic when mounted out in the airstream. |
