I agree with both statements here. Mainly because 99% of kickstarter/indie gogo/etc campaigns I see are for stupid shit that is never going to actually be viable. On the other hand I know it can be difficult to get loans with no proven history. Heard a good story about lending clubs on NPR last week which seems to be how a lot of people get loans to start businesses when they can't get a conventional loan.

Sounds like a whole lot of not my problem.

I get the benefit of kickstarter, I'm just not personally into the idea of giving some people money so that they can try to make me a thing, vs. just buying a similar thing, already stocked in a warehouse somewhere.

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Apoc - 11-28-2017

That's a fallacious comparison.

Of course everyone would rather buy from a well-established company that has been selling thousands of units for years. The point of KS, however, is to let new ideas see the light of day without having to get the okay from a bank or venture capitalist. You see something new and interesting that you want to see succeed, you back it. You get the product in return, often at a nice discount, for believing in their efforts.

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - SlimKlim - 11-28-2017

I understand that, and think it's great if it helps create products and business that wouldn't exist otherwise, I'm just saying that I'm not interested in being the guinea pig.

I was also speaking specifically to watches, I could conceive of stumbling across a product that is so groundbreaking and different from everything else, I just have to get in on it, but that hasn't happened yet.

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Apoc - 11-28-2017

Well, yeah, I kinda agree with you on the watches.

I personally wouldn't pay $600 for the GRINDR watch because I could get nice examples from more proven brands. I bought into the Undone backing because I liked their designs and there was probably no way I'd be designing custom pieces for $175.

Yessssss come to the dark side.

BTW: This is an amazing site to use when you're trying to figure out the actual specifications or variations between models. I've noticed it's really not that uncommon for online sellers to get some of the specifications wrong.

http://www.watchsleuth.com/seikosarfinder/search/?MOD=SARB017

The actual model # is SARB017. It'll wear fairly small at 38mm x 11mm, which is a good thing IMO. 200m waterproof rating would make it good for anything short of *actual* scuba diving (assuming you had it on a rubber/canvas/nato/metal strap). You also get a pretty good movement with a 50-hour power reserve, and a sapphire crystal.

It's not the cheapest watch out there, but it is a "lot of watch" for ~$400.

Finally picked up a new band for my iWatch. Got a leather band from Monowear Design. Happened to start getting their ads on my Instagram feed and saw they had some attractive looking bands. I think this was around $45? Leather is decent quality. Not super impressed with the clasp hardware feel but it's nice enough. I'll likely alternate this band on the weekends and keep the stock rubber for everyday since I wear it at the gym.

Still looking for new watch faces. Last time I checked Apple hadn't opened the option for 3rd party developers to make faces yet which is pretty shitty.

Looks great man!  Very modern and probably way comfy.  If you really don't like the clasp you should be able to swap it out, you just need the right size.

For leather bands, I like to hit mine with a little Lexol cleaner and conditioner every now and then like I use on my car seats.  The conditioner may slightly darken the color of the leather but it brings out the natural richness of the material IMO

That is pretty trash about the lack of dial options.  That is one thing I liked about the Galaxy wearables, there were literally a million paid and free options you could swap out at will.

But that would ruin the Apple experience.

FRAGMENTATION

After posting up about it, I got to picking apart some of the things I don't like about the PRW-S3500. Feature wise it's just about the perfect watch out there for the money. I decided that it's unfortunately just too big for my wrists. I like big watches but this is gigantic (57mm x 53mm) and it's hard for me to wear comfortably even on the nato strap. I also realized after wearing it a bit yesterday that I really miss the "negative" display of my old Protrek and that not having the STN display (Super-Twisted Nematic technology that allows you to see the digital display MUCH better from different angles) was a huge detractor. I just don't find as much interest looking at a positive display.

So I pulled the trigger on the Protrek PRW-3100Y-BCR (asia spec) last night! It doesn't have the carbon fiber band or sapphire crystal like the current piece and has about half the water resistance. It does however have all of the same features that matter, is significantly smaller, thinner and lighter and is still good down to 330+ feet which is more than I'll ever need it for. It also has a slightly newer / updated chip and the far superior STN display. This should be way more versatile to wear than the S3500. I should come close to break even when I sell the PRW-S3500 so a good deal all around!

I will also be for sure selling the Nighthawk with sapphire crystal upgrade since it will be getting zero wrist time when my vintage diver returns from its overhaul, so stay tuned if you are interested!

Just got an email about a new venture from Clock Work Synergy. I love their watch bands, and the design of the watches looks pretty nice and minimalist.

^Wish those guys had a retail store so I could go fondle the bands.

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - JustinG - 11-30-2017

You won't be disappointed by anything you get Polen.

Also what I found with Caseys Apple watch, is if you have a watch band tool, you can pop off the existing band and use the slides/lugs as adapters for any watch band. I think 20 mm for the 38mm watch and 22mm for the 42mm watch. But you should measure to confirm.

From my experience, stick with their "Premium" straps not the lower priced ones.  I bought a bunch of their lower priced natos and a leather strap from them.  The natos were made from a material that got sharp when they melt sealed the edges and it was like having a razor on your wrist.  I actually took sandpaper to the edges and tried remelting it but they have all just sat in my watch box.  Their cheaper leather band is fine, but it almost like splinters and cracks on the back so I haven't used it in a long time.

I did get a premium nato from them a while back and it was really nice, none of those issues.  The material was way better.  So yeah stick to their premium offerings.
