Got damn that's a good looking M.

I like the donkalicious 19's, particularly on a vert. :dunno:

#GTSPrep: It Begins

Spent part of Friday installing the Active Autowerke midpipe I bought from my friend Zack. Ended up having to pull the headers off of the motor, as I broke 3 of the 6 studs that connect the headers to the midpipe. Yay, old bolts. Thankfully I had installed all new exhaust manifold hardware when I did my head gasket job, so pulling the headers was a relatively quick task. I ended up removing the old midpipe attached to the headers, breaking everything apart on the floor, and taking the headers to "my shop" to have Gary and his tech bang the old studs out. They're just press-fit so it was an easy five-minute job.

So, new midpipe and new O2 sensor are installed. It sounds and smells wonderful (no cats on the track pipe).

Chatted with DJ a bit and he has a splitter that I can use. The search shall begin soon for a wing so I can get my aero on.

I'll get to the rest of the safety gear soon, none of that is a huge deal to get done - a day or two will have it all installed.

Yissss. This excites me! So awesome to see you go from pace to TT to w2w. I'm planning to make it to hyperfest again this year. Can't remember your time line but hopefully you'll be racing by then.

 can't wait to see you out in w2w

Comp school is in late March, so ideally every weekend after that

My buddy Jay came over yesterday and we made some great progress. Having someone else in the garage to just talk through ideas and motivate is super helpful.

We started out by looking at the fire system (a Spa 4L bottle) and planning the route for the tubing as well as logistics for bottle placement, pull handles, and nozzle placement. Using my incredibly refined PowerPoint skills, allow me to share a diagram of how it's setup:

So, there are two nozzles pointed at the driver, and three under the hood. Two under-hood nozzles point at the exhaust manifolds and the third points at the fuel rail. The spray pattern is such that I think this will cover enough of what matters most, given I'm in a fire suit and the ultimate goal is to simply buy more time to get out - saving the car is secondary.

There will be a FIRE pull mounted to the cage on both the driver and passenger side of the car, kinda straight out next to the dash.

We also got most of the way through installation of the kill switch. I ended up purchasing the Hard Motorsport kit, which, is a bit incomplete (for a 6-pole switch, you must still buy some of your own wiring), but you get a nice metal plate to mount everything to. As it is right now, the car's electronics will cut on and off with the switch. I need to wire up a resistor and a ground per my friend Eric, as it helps prevent any power surging on shutdown. Or something. Whatever, he sent me a wiring diagram so this is what I'm following:

So, once I get the fire bottle bolted to the floor and the kill switch install finished, I can send the car to my fabricator for those fire pull mounts as well as the window net mount. Should be able to wrap it up today or tomorrow on my end.

Re: Das Pace: My '97 M3/4/5 - JPolen01 - 01-08-2017

Let me know when it's test day!

In all seriousness though, is there a way to "dry" test this or something? How will you know if it actually works?

Das Pace: My '97 M3/4/5 - D_Eclipse9916 - 01-08-2017

FYI shunting the alternator (the resistor with ground) isn't necessary on an E36. Won't hurt to do though.

Great progress! You doing the test day in Feb?

Oh, so I can just leave it as the two (thick and thin) red battery cables and that's that?

Yeah, if I can get my act together and the weather doesn't suck, I'll bring it for the test day. Probably just on street tires but who knows.

Re: Das Pace: My '97 M3/4/5 - Jake - 01-11-2017

Appointment confirmed - off to Blockstar on Monday for Fire pull mounts and window net installation!

Re: Das Pace: My '97 M3/4/5 - Jake - 01-16-2017

Welding work is done!

Gorka did a really nice job making some little brackets for the fire pulls and window net. I need to get straps for the bottom of the net to finish that installation. He also noted that I hadn't yet drilled out the steering column lock (good catch) so I have to take care of that soon. I threw some slime green paint on the new welds when I got home this afternoon.

Had this amazing cheesesteak for lunch up the street from Blockstar:

The new hotness:

My trailer inspection is up in February and I noticed today that the tires on that are more or less at the wear bars. Given the mileage I've put on the trailer in the two years I've had it (9k or so?) I suppose that's all I can ask for from cheap Chinese tires.

Re: Das Pace: My '97 M3/4/5 - JPolen01 - 01-16-2017

Those fries looks pretty damn good as well

Re: Das Pace: My '97 M3/4/5 - Apoc - 01-16-2017

Where's the cheesesteak? All I see is some meat sandwich thing with lettuce on it.

Apoc Wrote:Where's the cheesesteak? All I see is some meat sandwich thing with lettuce on it.

I promise, it was full of meat (ayyyy).

More progress yesterday. Got the straps from my friend Chris that allow the window net to be strapped to the cage, so that's installed. Tidied up some of the interior. Re-installed the passenger seat and harness.

I started working on the ASC delete - all this time, I've simply left the throttle actuator unplugged, but now it's time to actually remove it for simplicity's sake and to allow the maximum amount of air to reach the intake with no pesky second throttle body in the way. It's all removed although the pre-96 intake boot has two ports for vacuum lines. I only need one, for the idle control, so I will have to find something that can plug the other port.

Hoping I can schedule dyno time with the Flimmiest of Flams down in Richmond soon. (Edit: February 10th at 10 AM)

Yeah, we should get lunch. Only stipulation is the need for trailer parking.

Re: Das Pace: My '97 M3/4/5 - Jake - 01-24-2017

Did a few little things last night.

Yanked the ASC secondary throttle body from the intake path, which requires using a longer intake boot to make up the difference. Joey had given me one a long time ago and it's still in very good shape. It has two holes for things like the ICV, intake temp sensor, etc but the S52 cars only need one for the ICV. Turner will sell you an [i]$11 metal plug(!)]/i] to block it off. I took the cheapo route and went to Home Depot. A $0.96 PVC plug fit right in there.

Yay, window net:

Drilled out the steering column lock, too. Easier than I thought it'd be, definitely as nerve-wracking as I thought it'd be, and it sent a lot of metal shavings onto my floorpan. Oops.

My friend Jay is coming over tonight to help practice my "get out of the car" drills. The standard is 10 seconds out the door, 15 seconds out the window. I'm hoping to be able to do both in the allotted time while blindfolded.

Re: Das Pace: My '97 M3/4/5 - D_Eclipse9916 - 01-24-2017

Practice your exit drills with helmet and HANs on. You will be surprised how much the Hans can catch on shit. You can use blue painters tape on your visor to blindfold.

And great progress!

Oh yeah, this is going to be in the full suit, helmet, HANS, gloves, etc with a taped-up visor.
