If by local... You mean ashby arms lol

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - mrbaggio - 08-28-2010

Went to look at guns today. I really like how the 92fs felt in my hands compared to the glocks.

Do buyers negotiate at a gun store as you would at a car dealer? Or do you just pay the sticker price and shut up?

Also how much do you figure you can save by buying at a gun show? There is one coming up in about a month. I'm not in a rush so I could wait if I had to.

You should try dry firing the Beretta, especially the double action trigger. IT BLOWS.

mrbaggio Wrote:Do buyers negotiate at a gun store as you would at a car dealer? Or do you just pay the sticker price and shut up?

Pretty much you just pay whatever they offer and stfu. If you can get it cheaper elsewhere, you should, but there isn't that much wiggle room on a firearm.

mrbaggio Wrote:Also how much do you figure you can save by buying at a gun show? There is one coming up in about a month. I'm not in a rush so I could wait if I had to.

I've never really saved much going to gun shows...gun shows are more about having ALOT of inventory to search through. If you want a thing, that thing will be there for you to fingerfuck. I suggest you do exactly that. Go to the gunshow, don't look at price or brand, and pick up every gun. If you would like assistance, I would be happy to accompany you for your entry into the wild wonderful world of firearms. Just tell me when.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Ryan T - 08-29-2010

I agree with Rex, wasn't impressed with the Beretta. As for haggling, you can haggle some, I always do. On a brand new gun you pretty much pay whatever the tag says, but on a used gun you can haggle. I always had good luck with it at the Co-op in harrisonburg and the gun shops here in my home town. You can normally get $30 or $40 off or at least get them to throw in an extra mag or box of ammo if you pay full price. I can't speak for Nova gun shops, but I've never paid the sticker price for a used gun....on any of the 11 I've bought at a store.

Gun shows, to me at least, are just that. Shows. From my experience with local gun shows there are TONS of guns to compare to each other but I've never found any deals to write home about. If your looking for some random obscure firearm that is hard to find, a gunshow would be a good place to look/good place to find someone who knows where one is, but I've never bought a gun at one. I've bought plenty of ammo from them, but never a gun.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Kaan - 08-29-2010

My glock 19 is for sale.... Holesters, mags, bag, etc

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - getfast - 08-30-2010

CaptainHenreh Wrote:$495 is a good price for a SIG but it isn't all that good for a used autopistol. I paid under 600 for my NEW M&P. (Granted, no night sights but with everything else you listed AND two additional mags on the way.)

All metal/hammer 229 vs half plastic/striker M&P... they're very different in the hand, and priced accordingly. Closest SIG to a M&P is probably the SP2022 (half plastic/hammer) which is $400-$500 new.

CaptainHenreh Wrote:Also, are you going to carry? If not, why are you getting the compact? Full size will shoot better, be higher capacity, and probably feel better in your hands.

229 is not really a compact, 229 is a 226 minus just a little bit of height/length. They feel nearly identical and are equally accurate not to mention equally difficult to conceal. Mag capacity is 15 either way, for 9mm at least.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Kaan - 08-30-2010

the striker hate is strong with this one

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 08-30-2010

getfast Wrote:Some stuff.

I used one example that I happened to have on hand. Of course a poly pistol will be cheaper than steel (unless it's made by H und K) and I still don't think 495 is all that good of a price for a USED auto, sig or not, especially when you have no idea of the history, no accessories, maybe no factory support. OTOH, I wouldn't buy a NEW Sig either, not until they get their QC in order. Mikey's just looking for something he's familiar with, which I can get behind, I just think there are better deals out there than a used .40 Sig for 500 bucks. I just didn't want mikey to jump on that particular pistola just because it was "Hey! Cheap Sig!" That's all.

I DO kind of wish the M&P had a hammer, but that's just me being a bit of a luddite. A hammer isn't necessarily isn't really better or worse, just different. Still makes the bullet go bang every time, and polymer framed, striker fired guns have certainly proved their worth.

If I had my druthers, Julie and I would both carry P30's, and so would everyone else. But I'm not made of money. :-p Presumably, neither is Mikey. I just want him to spend his money wisely.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - getfast - 08-30-2010

CaptainHenreh Wrote:"Hey! Cheap Sig!"

Agreed, and I wasn't criticizing, just providing another opinion.

Striker isn't worse, just often less enjoyable for those of us who struggle with trigger-related consistency/accuracy problems.

I'd spend $549 on a CPO 229 with warranty instead of $495 for a used one any day. Or even better, I'd spend $499 on one of the new SIGs that doesn't have the QC problems... for instance a triple serial/German-not-New-Hampshirean SP2022 with night sights.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - mrbaggio - 09-07-2010

I decided to go with the Beretta. It is actually the M9 version (almost identical). I know what you mean about the DA trigger pull. It is stiff. I don't plan on really using the gun in DA mode (I think). I don't yet feel comfortable enough to leave the gun with a round in the chamber. I read it can be fixed with a new spring, and that it gets better over time. They said the spring is pretty stiff right out of the box. For now I'm just going to shoot it a bunch, and see what what I learn. In the end I got a really good price on it.

Now! Where to shoot it, and who wants to come?

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - BLINGMW - 01-04-2011

How about CC 9mm? Have we talked about those yet? I think that'd be next for me. A little larger and hopefully more fun to practice with than an LCP, more power, plentiful and cheap ammo.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://best9mm.com/compact9mm.html">http://best9mm.com/compact9mm.html</a><!-- m -->

I guess the Keltec PF9 is pretty much what I'm looking for, the "benchmark" here, being really light and super slim (single stack magazine) and reviews actually make it out to be decent. Trigger pull is apparently a bit rough, but as I understand it that's kind of par for the course for this type of gun.

The Taurus 709 catches my eye because the trigger's a little lighter since it's SA (normally) but has 2nd strike capability. I also prefer having a safety. It's ALMOST as thin as the PF9, and a bit heavier. And of course, there's a few threads out there already mentioning quality control problems, don't know how much weight to put in that.

Any other recommendations? I've neither shot nor held any of these little 9s yet, though I plan to.

In marginally related news, my brother got a S&W SD9 recently, the "new" Sigma I guess. Trigger's pretty crunchy, but other than that it's ok. I would like to end up with a better trigger than that.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 01-04-2011

Well there's Ruger's new itty-bitty 9...should be in stores in the next few weeks or so. I know that Sean Thompson likes his XD subcompact, even if I hate it. Also, if you don't want a piece of shit, something like a P239 mebbe?

eta: I'm really the wrong person to ask, as I don't really understand ultralight, painful, difficult-to-shoot handguns. I live in a Free State, so if someone sees my M&P under my jacket, well, sorry.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Kaan - 01-04-2011

IMO you want to pistol to fit you... then you figure out how you want to CC it. obviously there are some limitations... but the more uncomfortable it is (aka super small in your hands and feels like shit) the less you'll be able to fire it smoothly...

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 01-04-2011

Why not just conceal your Taurus Death Machine?

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - V1GiLaNtE - 01-04-2011

Nice!

Interesting article on something that is always a relevant topic:

CaptainHenreh Wrote:Why not just conceal your Taurus Death Machine?
heh, well first, I suck at shooting it, but also I'm just trying to figure out if there's something:

a) small and light enough that I'd actually consider carrying it, and profile (flatness?) seems to me to be pretty important
b) not SO small that it's not fun to practice with and actually has non-embarrasing power

Probably doesn't exist, and even a tiny gun I can't really picture finding a comfortable way of carrying, but I'm just researching.

That article is *almost* useful (though not really relevant for my quest), but would be more useful if the methods for "trying on" a handgun were explained better and in more detail. I was unable to follow the explanation to even figure out if the Judge fits and he mostly focuses on guns that are too big, while I likely have the reverse problem. Videos? The figuring it out at the range method is nice and all, but impractical unless the gun shop is going to let people walk out with a sack-full-o-guns to try before they buy.

These characteristics describe a SIG P239. Find a CPO or used one if price is the issue.

That's why you find a range with a rental wall like this:
