Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - ScottyB - 11-09-2015 240k miles....that's badass. i hope my RS can handle that kind of abuse when it turns that mileage in another 10 years congrats on grp3, you've been ascending the tiers really quick! Nice work! i only heard what i thought was the wheel bearing once... the transmission i'm half tempted to run it until it blows (but since RJ will lend a hand i'm good with the $200 synchros)... the front end isnt broken but i dont know when the ball joints and tie rods were done. I know i have a tear in a tie rod boot, but its just best to do it all. i've learned to just do it all and not skimp. First, I'd like to sincerely thank Kaan for his offer to co-drive the Integra. Obviously, event would have never happened without his confidence in my ability and definitely the car (rolled 240k on track!?!?!?!). I think that's a serious testament to Honda's reliability. Scott Blair was my instructor per Kaan's suggestion. He had worked with him earlier on so he was familiar with the car and how it handled. I found the classroom sessions at times to be informational and yet rushed at the same time. I took the initiative to spend an extra couple of minutes after class talking with the instructor (Zach) on various parts of the track and approaches. Probably why I forgot my track pass almost every time walking out. I found this attitude and atmosphere at the track to be universal. EVERYONE has a secret or a tip to tell and you just have to listen for it. Folks were more than willing to share advice, tools, parts( Jake knows this best), and I really found myself happy to be in such a supportive community. Something I had come to expect from the 4x4 world where a sense of community is also strong. Saturday morning was wet. Seeing Jake's car coming off the flatbed first thing that morning shook me a little about my time on track. Getting on track fixed that as Scott coached me through our first session together. I felt the student/instructor relationship to be superb the whole weekend. Scott was aggressive in his corrections and yet laughed/smile/congratulated me on my successes. Most of Saturday was spent learning the car, learning the course, and finding the line. I left Saturday with my last session definitely being my fastest and minimal feedback from Scott. Sunday was different.. My first session was a little rusty as I was attempting to recover from the massive adrenaline ups and downs I had experience the day before. Overall, the brain being a little slow to get up to speed. Session 2/3 were by far my worst sessions. I was spending A LOT of time with Scott building my approach to Turns 4/5 and Turn 10. Many of you know turn 4 can get crazy fast leading into a very slow and tight turn 5. Session 2 I was trying to change my approach by coming out of turn 4 fast and heading towards the inside to quickly brake and turn in to 5. This lead me to locking up the car and as I was coming in super hot. I was able to recover, but my line was suffering the rest of the course including turn 10. This reduction in speed and line was causing me to forfeit my "position" on track. Session 3 may have been my worst between the two. My high speed lockup last session had reduced my confidence and causing me to be sheepish in my braking and turn-in. Again, working on the strategy earlier I came into turn 5 hot with a bit of trail braking causing me to spin the car into the grass on the inside of 5. Scott and I laughed it off and we spent the rest of the lap discussing what I had done wrong. But again, this messup was causing me to continue to loose braking and speed confidence. This loss was causing me to turn into 10 too early and not keeping up the speed. After session 3 Scott and I talked. I explained my confidence was low due in part to my turn 4/5 screwups the last 2 sessions. Scott asked if we could take the car out in DE4 with the rest of the instructors. So we did. JESUS GOD IN HEAVEN the speed we were carrying into turn 4 was just insanity for that poor little car. The Integra took all of it. Scott and I were laughing and giggling the whole time. He showed me it's OK to throw the car around. And by constantly "sawing" the wheel you're always feeling for where your grip is at. Letting the backend swing around really helped you drive the car through the turns. I took this new found confidence with me into the last session of the day. I drove harder and faster and really let the rear end dance around in the turns. "Sawing" the wheel let me open the wheel sooner and faster which translated into turn in and exit speed with a very stable car. I left that session with minimal feedback from Scott and was able to "hold my position" on the track. Overall, what a rewarding experience. I think what I enjoyed the most was the real learning aspect and the tangible results when you "do it right" or mess up. You can feel when you hit the turn just right as the car smoothly rockets itself out of turn 9 or 10 (the most noticeable for me). Given my scorecard from Scott, I think another DE1 would do me right and I'd be ready for 2. I think this is something I would really like to pursue in the future with my own vehicle and will have to revisit when time/money allows. Overall 10/10 for learning how to go fast with great people. You really do have to do a race weekend, they are a bit more fun with all the racers, after parties etc. Glad to see you saw the results immediately, that is sometimes hard for newbies. Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - Jake - 11-11-2015 +1 to everything DJ said. It only gets better if it's a "full" weekend with all the W2W racers involved as well. Scott sounds like a fun instructor, I'd love to get him in my car for some schoolin'. Glad you had such a fun time, it sounds like you learned a lot given it was your first weekend. Always fun to have those "a-ha!" moments where something clicks and you noticeably improve a part of your driving! Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - rherold9 - 11-11-2015 Glad to see you out there Cabell. Seems like just one hit of the go fast crack pipe has gotten you hooked  . For your first time out in a car you didn't know you sounded like you were doing well and having a lot of fun. That's all that really counts. You'll pick up everything over time. It's a lot of sensory overload but you just get used to it over time. Some things I focused on my first times that seems like you were picking up on is situational awareness and paying attention to mirrors/flag stations. There is nothing more important than that your first times out there, tbh. It helped me feel more comfortable out on track quicker so I could focus on other things. At least in my opinion this is what I believe helps most but everyone is different. Just do what feels right like you were saying  Hoping to see you out there more in the Summer or Spring? There were quite a few times where I was giving point-by's where Scott later commented he was completely unaware of the vehicle behind me. The red-flag situation was also a great learning opportunity (at the expense of that guys DA Integra ).I will definitely be visiting the track in the future. Maybe I'll work a few weekends and build up some credits. Great job out there man and thanks again for all the pointers! I just heard the radio call and saw it come in on the tilt-bed. Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - rherold9 - 11-12-2015 Lost it through 4 supposedly. Not sure what side Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - Kaan - 11-12-2015 In light of the 3rd gear grind, a long winter break, and “moving up” the ladder fairly quickly… I need to take a serious look at Time Trails. The Basics: TTF* Base class (* = 7 points) 2625lbs minimum weight Tires: A6. +2 (120-200TW tires) A10. -1 (base class allows 215s, I’ll be running 205s) Engine: C4. +1 (Intake) C22. +5 (full exhaust, headers/cat) Drivetrain: D5. +3 (LSD, I don’t have it but I might as get one right?!?!) Suspension: E3. +3 (Konis) E5. +2 (Ground Controls) E7. +2 (ITR Sway Bar) E9. +4 (alignment arms, front/rear) Brakes/Chassis: F1. +2 (ITR Brakes) F4. +3 (Subframe Brace, required for sway bars) This would make me a TTE car which is a very popular class. The total is 33 points. I have 6 points to spend. I have two directions of thought… 1. Move up to A7. Tires… UTQG rating of +40… Maxxis RC-1, Nitto NT01, Toyo R888, RA-1, etc. 2. Add E3. ECU to squeeze out the HP and D3. Which will allow me to change the transmission completely… ITR/GSR/Hybrid 6 points of weight reduction is 95lbs… good but I think it could be better spent elsewhere. Option 2 would be the most expensive off the bat and set me up for H2. Option 1 would be the more expensive over the life of a season and doesnt move me toward any class. Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - navin - 11-12-2015 Do you take points for any camber adjustment, or is it less if you only do front arms? If so I'd say skip the rear arms and let the the camber fall wherever it does, and adjust it out with washers if needed. Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - Kaan - 11-12-2015 its an all or nothing +4 points. Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - rherold9 - 11-12-2015 DJ has said it a few times in my thread and he is looking like he is right for TTE. Tires. Get the best and widest compound possible if you plan on TTE. You can see how tires is working out for me. If you plan on HC well you know what to do. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - Kaan - 11-12-2015 if i dont to the camber adjustment, I can point to 225/45/15 R7 hoohoos... but $1k for tires makes things sandy Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - D_Eclipse9916 - 11-12-2015 Kaan Wrote:In light of the 3rd gear grind, a long winter break, and “moving up” the ladder fairly quickly… I need to take a serious look at Time Trails. Wasting a lot of points (that is if you want to be TT competitive, and not worried about HC. Go back to stock sway bars and up your GC spring rates to compensate. This will get you +2 back for sway bars and +3 for subframe brace. 5 points is a lot to spend in TTE, use it for power or compound of tire. (I did this in TTC) Go back to stock brakes. You dont need bigger brakes in TT since you are running for ONE fast lap. Get a good compound brake pad and worry less about how big it is. In TTE I cant imagine you even need brakes at all. Do you need the alignment arms? Can you get "enough" without them? With BMWs you can get enough camber without any points, but that may not be the choice now. You can see how modifying a car before doing the points is actually backwards. I demodded my car a bit when I went TT. |
