Another HPDE down this past weekend. Car had no issues this time around as I wasn't pushing it as hard due to it being hotter. Haven't really looked at time, but I'd assume high 2:20's to low 2:30s with the way I was driving. Not that that matters anyhow. Phone's accelerometer was picking up 1.5-1.2 G's max in turns. Lols. Let's just go with a reasonable 1.1-1.2.

Overall, another great weekend. I'll post videos tonight and tomorrow. They are almost all uploaded.

I was solo'd 4 out of 7 sessions I ran. Instructor was very happy with me. The good news is I'll be in HPDE2 next event woo. Whether or not to run solo that is the question. I felt perfectly comfortable solo this past weekend. I was surprised how comfortable I'm getting out there on track.

Both instructors I've had both said I've got the line down at both tracks it's just the matter of working on small things (compressing brakes zones, consistently pushing the car, threshold braking, figuring out when to downshift, what gear is better where, etc...). All these thing will just come with time.

My question to the alumni is should I run solo and practice small things then come back with an instructor? Not sure what to do in that regard.

when I was soloed at summit after the first session on sunday, I asked the instructor to get back in the car for the middle of the two sessions just to give me a sanity check and to reinforce things I'm still missing.

to be honest I'd rather have an instructor, maybe see if a different one wanted to jump in to see what they have to say. learn everyones tricks!

it can't hurt to get an instructor back in the car for at least the first few sessions on saturday. you get away from the track for a while and its easy to forget things or let bad habits sneak back in. as Kaan said its just a sanity check. once you're feeling totally in the zone again just go back to solo.

great to hear you and the car managed the heat OK. so easy to get deliriously dehydrated out there just sitting in a hot car or standing on the pavement all day.

Lols. Oldie but goldie.

My first few sessions out there a few people I would catch up then they'd foot to floor it down the straights then I'd catch up and it was a repeating process. Then once they did point me by it was like a drag race. And I was like yup I'm just going to stay behind you until you let off the throttle.

I'm surprised my car did so well with heat too. I guess economy cars that don't give a shit ftw? Hottest temps on track were 195 usually 188ish. Once brought in temps spiked back to 200ish for a bit before I shut it down.

To be honest having an instructor in my car I felt obligated to talk and felt distracted compared to when I was by myself. I know an instructor can give me a sanity check like stated above and I think that would be best

Probably not a great time to ask you this, but have you heard of autodip? It's supposedly a vinyl based single-stage removable paint that gives a better finish than plastidip. They haven't started selling it by the gallon yet, but some of the mirrors and wheels I've seen are surprisingly decent finishes. If it looked good enough, and was cheap enough, I'd consider having the dings pulled from the BMW, sanding down the rough spots in the clear, and doing a temporary color change just for fun to hide all the paint damage until I can afford a real paint job.

That looks like poop. You can make plastidip look glossy like paint with the glossifier additive I believe.

It looks 90% better than plastidip IMO. Like, ryan's car looks fine when looking at a panel square on, but looking down the side of the car looks like shit. (Sorry.) Aside from an orange-peely effect the autodip looks like a more consistent finish.

That's because this is a satin finish not high gloss... you can find plenty of cars on the internet with the new Topcoat in high gloss that literally looks like paint. It's 98% clear. Use the internets without being ignorant.

And I agree with you polecat. That looks like shit. I would never trust something that is single stage.

The car looks great in person. You just need a good camera and lighting for dip to look good in that isn't high gloss in pictures. I do have pictures coming though...

Single Stage vs. Double Stage has nothing to do with the quality of the end result, at least when it comes to real paint. Lots of older cars left the factory with single stage paint and if it was properly cared for it looks just as good as anything else. My Saab was single stage and looked like a mirror, and my miata turned incredible after I polished it. People seem to have an illogical aversion to single stage that I don't really understand, only reason I can figure is it turns your polishing pad the color of your car and freaks people out.

Also, Raail's product is single stage, arguably on par with or offering better results than DYC. I'm not sure if this car has an additional top-coat on it though, it is pretty freakin' shiny. I suppose I just need to find someone who's used Raail or Plastidip to achieve the same effect I'd want and check it out in person. I'd do a bright color, maybe with some metallic, and as much gloss as possible, but only if I could get something convincingly close to paint, otherwise I'll just continue rocking my beat up factory finish.

IMO the Autodip stuff looks like it has the most consistent gloss effect, so I'm interested to see if there's less orange peel in it when they start applying it with a real gun. Again, I'd want to see it and touch it in person before passing final judgement, their own product photos are all I've really seen so far.
