Re: Automotive News Discussion - davej - 08-26-2014 Yeah, if you look at the blown up photo of http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/ima ... cqyx1z.jpg you can see that mirror is split/angled in two, like Joey said, appears to show what's in front and on the passenger wheel blindspots. Re: Automotive News Discussion - Evan - 08-26-2014 Spend lots of engineering resources updating an old car to modern crash standards, etc put in a new engine and transmission, then only sell it for a year in a market that doesn't really buy big SUVs. Brilliant Toyota. Judging by the thickness of the doors I'm guessing they didn't concern themselves with getting it up to date on ALL crash safety standards. Those things look like cardboard. At least it's bigger than whatever would hit you in Japan. :dunno: Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 08-28-2014 Been back and forth to the Jeep dealer a few times, and Jeff is running some numbers for me too. I test drove the gas powered V6 yesterday to see if I would be happy with it and I most definitely would not. It's not even in the same league as the turbo diesel V6. On paper their acceleration / quarter mile is almost identical but that just doesn't tell the story...for around town the 420ftlbs @ 2000 rpm is a SERIOUS benefit. The V6 even in "sport" mode could barely keep up unless you wring that engine out. Plug in a power programmer to the diesel and you would be out running the V8 (not SRT). As expected I am seriously underwater on my car right now, compounded by the fact that my Carfax shows a "serious" accident I am assuming due to the dollar value attached to the repairs. I had the invoice from the body shop showing exactly what was repaired and that it wasn't major, but it is a lot of risk for another dealer or buyer to take on. So I am at a crossroads, if I stay in the Jag I am in it for the very long haul (for me)...probably 3-4 years before I break even. If I go with the Jeep, I would plan to be in it for the long haul and eventually pay it off (for once), but I would have a chunk of change tied up in it. Basically I live with the negative equity and enjoy my car for a few years, or tie the negative equity up in a new car with no accident history that will not depreciate as quickly. The "high volume" local dealer here is getting pretty aggressive on pricing, I believe because they are getting a bunch of 2015s starting to come in and they hit a big factory bonus when they move a certain number of units (even if they sell them for a loss). Someone within the industry told me that, but Jeff might know more. They really want to move the inventory they have now, but I told myself if I am considering a brand new car it will be spec'd out exactly how I want it...so they will probably try to find an identical model somewhere else. On a side note, this also helped sway my decision toward the diesel. This is a relatively recent study on Total Cost of Ownership for gas vs. diesel variants of the same cars. Being a data guy, I ate this up. Very interesting to see in the majority of cases there is a significant long term savings despite the higher maintenance and gas costs right now of diesels. Check it out if you are bored: http://www.dieselforum.org/files/dmfile ... dd2017.pdf Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 08-28-2014 WRXtranceformed Wrote:or tie the negative equity up in a new car with no accident history that will not depreciate as quickly. I have no idea what your cash flow/financial situation is like but that would make my butthole so tight. I would be chicken shit to roll negative equity into another new car loan, for fear that my situation would change somewhere down the line and I'd end up stuck with the compounded negative equity from both vehicles. Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 08-28-2014 SlimKlim Wrote:That is one of the biggest things I am running up against, being stuck with a vehicle worth WAY less than what my note is on it. It's the fun little balance you get to play when you go through cars as frequently as I do, and would rather keep your cash tied up in investments that are making you money vs. a depreciating asset that is losing you money every day. Which you only works if you can get absurdly low interest rates like I have been able to.WRXtranceformed Wrote:or tie the negative equity up in a new car with no accident history that will not depreciate as quickly. Jeff and I talked through it, financially could I do it with the Jag? Sure. Could I get rid of Rachael's car instead and take on a second higher car note? Sure. Do I want to? Not really. I have a very aggressive investment plan set up with my brother that I don't want to deviate from, because I don't want to work forever. It is important to note that I would save between $400 and $1000 each year on my insurance by swapping the Jag for a Jeep, which negates some of the negative financial impact. But, like you said, I am tied up with an expensive Jeep for years (which may or may not be a big issue, as practicality and flexibility of use will be good for the future of our family). I would not be a good steward of our family's money if I took on two big notes by dropping Rachael's car, so the Jag is definitely the best option if I go that route. WRXtranceformed Wrote:I have a very aggressive investment plan set up with my brother that I don't want to deviate from, because I don't want to work forever. You could not buy a brand new $45k Jeep that's going to depreciate like a falling rock if that's your primary goal. You're basically saying that your investments can earn you xx%/yr where the car loan is only x%/yr, so by keeping as much cash out of the car note as possible you're earning the difference of xx-x every month. That makes perfect sense. But if your primary goal is to invest as aggressively as possible why not dump the Jag and scoop up some CPO SUV that's 50% of the way through it's depreciation curve, netting you another $15-25k cash over the next few years to pump into your awesome investment plan. It doesn't matter on what schedule you pay down that brand new GC, it's still going to cost you $30k+ over 5-6 years. To me this sounds like fretting over the best way to save a few pennies per year while you're simultaneously lighting a big pile of money on fire that's gonna burn for the next 6 or 7. Just sayin'. :dunno: Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 08-28-2014 Depreciation wise the Jeep would be a terrible choice though. I'm with Joey, if you got a diesel CPO Suv you'd be saving a ton over the Jeep and you'd still have a long term warranty. For example, you could get an X35d with about 30k miles for less than the JGC, and it would have 6 years and 100k miles of warranty (from original in service date). Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 08-28-2014 All makes sense, hence my quandary. I could live with the cash burn and dropping the Jag if I had a brand new, loaded out Jeep...but not so much with another used vehicle that is not as nice. They did make diesel GC's I believe a few years ago, but then I would be looking at an older Jeep/SUV that would be nice but not as nice nor would it have the tech of the new ones. What may ultimately make more sense unless someone offers me a deal I can't say no to is wait a few years for when Rachael's car is off lease, then hopefully find a CPO/used new gen diesel Jeep. I'll have a few more years into my Jag too so it would give me more flexibility on which car to trade. I'd say let her Elantra run its course on the lease, turn it in, and replace that with a year-old CPO'd Diesel JGC. You'd get the current-gen JGC but someone else would have taken some of the depreciation hit, it'd be CPO'd for a few years to keep your mind at ease, and by then you'd hopefully be back in the black on the Jaaaaag. One sporty badass saloon, one go-anywhere-30-highway-mpg luxoJeep, sounds good to me. Re: Automotive News Discussion - Goodspeed - 09-02-2014 A little over a day away from the ND Miata reveal at the Miatas @ MRLS event in Monterey. (countdown clock) ![]() This last minute rendering got out today, apparently made by an employee at Mazda no-less. If this is close to what it'll look like I am very, madly excite. ![]() ![]() Oh, ~2100 pound target weight, Skyactive motor possibly with a turbah, etc. etc. Re: Automotive News Discussion - *insertusernamehere* - 09-02-2014 I love how the front of Mazda's always have an expression now haha. I don't know why but the front reminds me of a dragonballz character Re: Automotive News Discussion - .RJ - 09-02-2014 Is there a coupe coming?
