If you want to scare someone away, get a big mean dog. As I've said before (many times) anything that will sufficiently ventilate a bad guy's insides (FBI Sez: 12 inches minimum) will make short work of the lowest-bidder shitty insulation and sheetrock every home since 1975 has been built out of. If you're going to play with it (And I shoot trap and skeet more than I shoot any of my other guns it is ALOT of fun) then do yourself a favor and buy the nicest gun you can afford. If you refuse to do that, go buy one of the "sporter special" models of the 870 or 500. I started with a 400 dollar turkish POS auto, and my Franchi I-12 has been one of the best "happiness" investments I've made in a long time. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-12-2010 I say deployable rubmle strips like in security garages, so at moments notice of yellow they can pop rumble strips. Be pretty hilarious to see a bunch of skittles (spec miatas) bouncing all over the place trying to go as fast as possible over rumble strips with race suspension Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - mrbaggio - 07-12-2010 CaptainHenreh Wrote:mrbaggio Wrote:I see what you are saying about being mutually exclusive. It was built in 71 and the walls are quite solid. No of that matters that much really. Is there a decent buyers guide in this thread already? I started to read it from the start, but I soon realized I wasn't getting what I was looking for. As you guys throw out gun names, model numbers, and gun jargon I google them to get an idea of what you are talking about, but I usually end up with a parts reseller or a shady looking webstore front selling guns. Any chance we could get a FAQ/newbie buyers guide up here? If that's asking too much I will just shoot when I end up buying the WRONG gun. I understand not wanting it to be whored up, but it seems like the best place to ask follow up questions would be that thread. Things I'd like to see answered: -shotgun gauge -shotgun brands -ammo brands -opinions on trigger locks and gun safes -questions to ask or things to read so you don't sound like a complete noob when browsing -thoughts regarding transporting -recommending reading (for maintenance and such) -where do you shoot -where can one get training Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 07-12-2010 Apoc Wrote:Kinda stupid that it's locked. I understand not wanting it to be whored up, but it seems like the best place to ask follow up questions would be that thread. Good call, I'll make some updates and forward them to a mod, along with maybe a link to this thread designating it as the discussion thread? For shotgun gauge, I hate to be pedantic, but I'd probably just link to a wikipedia article. Gauge is pretty straightforward. Shotgun brands, I will address this. Ammo brands, man that's tough. What brand of tires do you like? Same thing with ammo. That's why I suggested going into a gunshop. Trigger locks, gun safes...can you be more specific? I don't have/use either. A gun I'm going to use/need in an emergency is not something I want to have to unlock a safe for. As far as sounding like a noob...honestly if you read this article you'll be in better shape than 90% of the people that most gun shops deal with. Otherwise, I have a few links I intend to ad for reading. I just wanted to get this up. Shooting, uh, I'll add some stuff. Links to ranges. Training, I hate to reccomend one group over another. Your local range ought to be able to help you, and if you PM me, I can point in the right direction, depending on what you want Finally, laws regarding transporting just got a fuckload easier in VA. You can have it in your glovebox without breaking the law. But I don't like doing questions on law cuz, uh, I'm not a lawyer. I am especially not your lawyer. Sooooo... :dunno: Thanks Chris.
Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Apoc - 07-12-2010 I left the questions purposefully vague because often noobs really don't know how to be more specific. I've done a lot of reading online so I don't have any specific questions myself, but in the beginning I wasn't even really sure what I wanted/needed to know. Mostly I'm trying to throw out questions that I had in hopes it might cover someone else starting down the same path. Shotgun barrel length might be something worth touching upon too... especially since most people say "I want to shot clays, but I also wouldn't mind home defense." I know it's covered here, but would be worthwhile to put in the FAQ. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 07-12-2010 Ryan T Wrote:Your misguided hatred for a fine company like sturm, ruger and company has found it's way into a locked/stickied thread. Hey man, I didn't hate on them. I just put them in the same box as Kel-Tec, Taurus, et. al...which is where they belong. You can't tell me that if you put a SIG and a Ruger .45 side by side that you'd pick the Ruger. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Ryan T - 07-12-2010 Against a SIG your probably right, but if I'm paying for the gun I'd trust my life to a Ruger before I'd shell out the extra money for a S&W or a CZ. Less expensive /= less capable. I'd take a Ruger over some Beretta's side by side. I'm not saying they are the be all end all of quality firearms, but they certaintly belong amongst the company of H&K and Glock, and not with Kel-tec and Charter. I'm not saying they are the be all end all of quality firearms, but they certaintly belong amongst the company of H&K and Glock, and not with Kel-tec and Charter. I'm sorry, I disagree. Look at the Ruger LCP: ![]() Now look at the Kel-Tec P3AT: ![]() NOW tell me which came first? Who copied who? In my thread, I never said Ruger was BAD. I said that the user will need to take extra time to make sure that the one they got is good. Like Matt Leech, who had to send his back TWICE before it would reliably extract. Doesn't mean they can't make a good one, but I can't in good conscience say "Ruger is Good To Go" like I could with Glock. You notice I put the S&W Sigma pistols in there too. They're not bad. Very inexpensive. But the trigger sucks and they're a glock knockoff. (literally, Glock sued them for patent infringement and won.) I'd be willing to remove Ruger's revolvers from that "second tier" category except for the recent stories I've heard of the LCR assploding. I know, I know, plural anecdotes are not data but there just isn't any hard data out there. You freely admit yourself that they're not as quality as the other tier 1's I listed (I'll ignore your statement that they're as good as HK...lulz) and I'm sure Jeff will be by any minute to defend his Taurus wheelgun. Once more, it's not that they're *bad* it's that they're not as good. Here's the thing. I don't like Ruger, as a company. That's a personal bias. But many of their products are perfectly fine. The redhawk and blackhawk revolvers, their bolt action rifles, their .22lr pistols...hell the 10/22 is THE rimfire semi auto rifle for many people. There might as well not BE another one as far as some people are concerned. And I'm OK with that. The Mini-14 is a hell of alot better than it used to be, and the SR-556 is really good. I still wouldn't recommend people buy them, but that's my personal opinion, not a professional one. But my auto pistol "hate" is separate from that. They're derivative designs that simply aren't as good as others. Doesn't mean they are bad, but what it does mean is that many times an extra 100 dollars will get you a much better handgun. (example: Bud's gun shop has the Ruger SR9 for $427...they have an M&P9 for 520. I will eat Ramen for another two weeks EVERY TIME to get my dickbeaters around an M&P, and I'll recommend everyone else do the same.) How many IPSC and IDPA shooters use Rugers? I see a shitload of HK's, 1911's, a whole Glock flock, S&W M&P's are rapidly gaining in popularity, and I see more than a few CZ's. And of course, there's always the ex-army guys with their 92f's. What I DON'T see are Taurus and Ruger. (At least, not with auto pistols. Many people use Ruger wheelguns, but this may be because not as many revolvers are made.) You see more Miatas than MR2's on the track...does that mean that an MR2 is a bad track car? No. It means that the Miata is probably better. In the end, if people follow my instructions for fit and point, they may very well end up with a Ruger. If they also follow my instructions for training, then their Ruger will either pass or fail, under their own hand. I'm ok with that. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Kaan - 07-13-2010 Ryan, if you havent sent your Ruger back to the company for work... you are the only one i know that hasnt. I've probably put 30k rounds through my Glock, and its still in spec as of 05/09... its something i could trust my life to, but i dont think i can say the same if someone threw me a Ruger.... MAYBE their revolvers... but as of late a lot of revolvers are starting to have issues... i think they arent getting enough QC attention by just about everyone! Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Ryan T - 07-13-2010 I respect Mr. Rex's opinion, but I too completely disagree. I can only speak for my 4 Rugers with over 10,000 rounds through all of them combined and I have never had a jam/misfire/problem. Hell I trust my life to my Ruger LCP without question every time I go out into the field, as do many of my colleagues when they are off duty; and trust my home to my GP100 every night when I go to bed...and I sleep like a baby. It all comes down to a difference of opinion, but you have Ruger in the wrong category. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - BLINGMW - 07-13-2010 you guys crack me up  Hey, so I have to question.... something doesn't seem quite right about the buying process you recommend. I realize it's not "yours", and I don't have any sound alternatives to recommend. But why would we think a newbie would know how to hold a gun correctly enough that his "hand points naturally with" it? I mean, if that's much of what he bases his purchase on, it just sounds like random chance that he's going to pick one up and say "ooooh I opened my eyes and this gun was made for me"! It just doesn't seem repeatable. After an hour or so at the range with someone helping him, if he went back to the same table and picked up all the same guns with his eyes closed, would he pick out the same gun? Shouldn't we expect that if we're about to teach this person how to shoot better, that their grip and "muscle memory" will and should change to conform to the tool? To *me* (big disclaimer), it seems like basing your purchase on research, expert opinions, and narrowing down your specifications as much as possible, THEN trying out a short list of ones you're interested to make sure they match your research and don't conflict with you would be the way to go. Kind of the way I would recommend buying just about anything. :dunno: The good news is that you can sell most guns for close to what you paid for them. And experience is always a good thing, so... maybe it's not worth giving another thought. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 07-13-2010 BLINGMW Wrote:But why would we think a newbie would know how to hold a gun correctly enough that his "hand points naturally with" it? Well, that's why I linked to a picture of the weaver grip. Make your hands look like that. I mean, without being able to actually SHOW someone how to hold a gun, you're right. But I do the best with what I got. Also, you should know right away if something ISN'T comfortable. Once you get a good grip on it, if it points naturally while you hold it then you're that much farther ahead of the game. Does that make sense? As far as research goes, while that isn't a bad approach, it will often result in someone making up their mind before they ever even touch a gun, and oopsie, it feels like a brick in their hands and they hate shooting it and it'll sit in a closet for weeks. Either that or their "research" consists of 1 guy they know telling them to get a glock and only a glock because glocks are good and if you don't like glocks you're an idiot or you're doing it wrong. But again, the advice is to hold everything, make a short list of things you like, and then go talk to a gun store you trust, like one of the two I listed above. Doing research on this topic on the internet means wading through a whole pile of bullshit and most people aren't up to the task. The most ideal process would be to have a whole lineup of guns at a store and the ability to shoot them all back to back. But nobody does that. I try to do the best with what I got. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Apoc - 07-13-2010 Is it coincidence that Ruger is being supported by two domestic-philes and not by those that drive foreign cars? I'm wondering if there some sort of sentimental connection clouding judgment about firearms as there is about cars. |
