RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Steve85 - 09-21-2017

FOUND IT!

Bought this on our honeymoon in the Caymans (15yrs ago) and misplaced it during the move. I wore it off and on and basically the after the battery died the last time just never got around to having it replaced.

It's obviously well worn, I was a mechanic for a few years with it and usually remembered to take it off after banging on an alternator bolt or something. I have no idea how much it was, but sure it wasn't much, definitely more in the sentimental category box than the impeccable taste box Smile. I really liked the chrono style, and number font etc., seemed on the sporty side.

The band is dry, faded and worn out so I'm looking for a new band. I'm thinking of taking this a little different direction with something like a red / black nylon band. I've been playing with the Undone configurator for a while and like the color band options, and especially now having the nicer Senna watch, I want something with a little color. They are both black face chronos so I want differentiate.

I would wear that watch like a boss.

How about red cordura?

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - WRXtranceformed - 09-22-2017

Nice find! Love it! It's got that awesome near-vintage vibe.

Definitely a good call to swap out the band, that would look choice on a good cordura or NATO strap. But the lugs look a little non traditional. If you get a sec, flip it over and take a shot of the back of the lugs (part that holds the end of the band on each side). Some watches are not bracelet-swap friendly, hopefully yours is!

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - CaptainHenreh - 09-22-2017

If you do decide to swap it out, and are considering disposal of the old band, would you terribly mind popping the old one in the mail to yours truly?

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Steve85 - 09-22-2017

Yes, that cordura is what I was actually picturing in my head when I said nylon. I was actually thinking canvas originally but that wasn't right either. (and that watch / band combo is tits!) So yeah, that or if I want striped I think those are the NATO style Lee mentioned.

Here a couple pics and I think I see what you're getting at Lee. It looks like the pins are in the metal part of the band. Hmm...

Rex, I'll decide whether I want to keep the original for posterity, if not, more than happy to send on over.

I think that's a standard spring bar. You need one of these lil guys.

Would it be possible to sticky some of the buying outlets on the first page of this thread? I've been looking to add a vintage seiko divers watch to my daily collection. I really like the example you purchased for your bro, Lee. Exactly what I want except add a NATO band.

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Apoc - 09-22-2017

The prior posts about red rekindled my desire for a red-ladden watch. I have mostly cool colors, with a heavy emphasis on blue, with the except of one skagen that has an orange ring on the dial. I kinda want an in your face color scheme but with a classic design. I also like that this band matches the interior of the GTI. I'm leaning towards the red face.

Get the red, white and blue Martenero Edgemere (the one on the left):

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Apoc - 09-22-2017

That aesthetic doesn't really do it for me - too nautical. It's also too similar to my skagens and I'd like something that's very obviously different.

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - SlimKlim - 09-22-2017

Pricey, and more burgundy than red, but damn: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073W1HMKY

Orient and Seiko are always worth a look if you want to keep it cheap. I've definitely seen a couple red dial Orients and quite a bit of Seiko 5 style watches with red dials. Although those may be too small and nerdy for your taste.

Ahh, upon closer inspection I see what you mean. I thought the only place to separate it would be at the pinholes in the metal. I was able to just pop it out without the tool, thank you!

And now I'm definitely looking for a new red or red / black band.

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Apoc - 09-22-2017

Burgundy is banned in our house because I'm a Cowboys fan.

I'm also looking for something that has a similar woman's watch because I want to convince the wife to get watches for our anniversary in two weeks.

I'll look into Orient a bit more - trying to keep it under $1k total for the two.

So Orient probably isn't what I'm looking for because I want large numbers, but this watch is very similar to the Brietling I've been salivating over.

I don't know how to do that but I can list out a few here that might get hit by forum searches:

Lee's Favorite Online Sites to Buy Watches!

1.  New watches
  • Jomashop - www.jomashop.com - This is a well-known and trusted "grey market" site that is legit despite the shady sounding name.  I have personally bought at least three watches from them and been very pleased with the products and their customer service.  They also run regular flash deals and lightning sales on rotating brands that give you silly discounts.  I honestly don't understand how they make money
  • Bob's Watches / DavidSW / Crown and Caliber / Hodinkee etc. - There are a number of trusted high-end watch buying sites that you can comfortably do business with.  Those I just listed are great for Rolex and other high end stuff if you are looking to save money off retail (and probably sales tax too) by buying used
  • Ebay - Ebay is actually a pretty decent go-to for really hard to find JDM-only watches.  You can get anything under the sun on Ebay but I don't know that I would trust to buy a brand new Rolex on the bay, just too risky
  • Amazon - the giant among giants ain't a bad place to find good deals sometimes but they are not always the lowest price especially for sought after models
2.  Used watches
  • Watchuseek Forums - http://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/  WUS is one of the biggest watch forums and I believe one of the biggest forums in the world.  They have a really well-connected global community of watch buyers and sellers and a good reputation tracking forum and actively work to ban scammers.  I have bought and sold a LOT on WUS and have been really impressed with how smooth the vast majority of my transactions have been.  Just like any other online buying forum make sure you ask lots of questions and research the buyer / seller, but this is one of the best outlets to locate that tough to find watch you're looking for (and find buyers for your watch)

  • Reddit WatchExchange - https://www.reddit.com/r/Watchexchange/  All the young kids like reddit nowadays, I personally think it is trash.  The Watch Exchange subforum is okay, I've sold one watch on it but the platform tends to be filled with more tire-kickers than actual buyers
  • Ebay - Ebay is still one of the best places to find used watches as well, especially vintage as there is a massive global community of vintage watch people buying, refurbishing and selling
3.  Accessories / Straps / Etc.

Metal Bracelets Leather straps
  • Hirsch
  • Amazon
  • Ebay
  • Miltat / Strapcode
NATO / Cordura
  • Crown & Buckle
  • Clockwork Synergy (Amazon)
  • Ebay
  • Miltat / Strapcode

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - SlimKlim - 09-22-2017

To add to the above, Strapsco is a good place for leather straps.

And yeah, I think finding matching his & her watches with red dials might be a tall order, but if you or anyone else is thinking about picking up an Orient I'd strongly encourage you to do so. I'm not sure it's possible to find better build quality for the money.

I think the Shinolas are a great fit there because they have a very unisex, simplistic style.

Since you're a Breitling fan, and it's your anniversary, and Breitling tends to also make similar watches for women...I submit this to you:

Side note: If anyone is shopping for a new timepiece, this morning I just got a discount code for $25 off $300 or more from Jomashop. Let me know if you want it! (Sorry this won't work for your Gshock Rex!)

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Apoc - 09-23-2017

I really dig that watch, but I don't want to spend that kind of money. In that range, I'm buying a MeisterSinger Pangaea... and if I'm buying a Brietling, I'm going all in on a Navitimer.

In other news, now the Shinola looks like crap in comparison.

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Apoc - 09-24-2017

Give me a his/hers idea with an "ivory" theme. No yellow gold.

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - WRXtranceformed - 09-24-2017

Ivory? like a white or mother of pearl face?

Preferred price range still under $1k?

RE: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Apoc - 09-24-2017

Ivory is the traditional 14 year anniversary present, but obvious real ivory isn't something we're interested in. Given that, I'm open to interpretation... whether it be white, off-white, or mother of pearl.

The 15 year traditional is crystal and modern is watches, so maybe I should just wait for next year.
