Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - Kaan - 05-08-2015

Full airdam + splitter + wing = 10 points which would allow you to run these tires (+6) at your current size:
Maxxis RC-1
Kumho V700
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup & MPS Cup 2
Nitto NT01
Pirelli PZero Corsa
Toyo R888
Toyo RA-1
Yokahama A048

on the TT forum there is major debate if you'll even need aero.

IMHO your car is plenty heavy enough to put heat into the "slicks" and stick without aero. If anything stickier tires will force you to run higher spring rates... but this all means nothing if you cant source the "right size" tires. What size are your baller rimz? can you get tires on them in 225 or 205? if you can will the roll out be right?

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - D_Eclipse9916 - 05-08-2015

^^ Oh hell no on any of those tires. Get rid of all the aero. Aero is a waste in TTD and below. Tires tires tires. Hoosier A7 with the widest one you could fit (if you want to be competitive). If you want to be somewhat competitive, at least do an RR, Maxxis/Kumho/Nittos are trash. I overheated Maxxis' RC-1 "slick" in 1 lap on a guy's RB26 powered 240sx, and convinced the guy he needed to be on Hoosiers. He went to a Hoosier and dropped his fastest time at VIR this past weekend with a smaller size.

D_Eclipse9916 Wrote:What are the "slicks" that you plan on running? Real Goodyear slicks? Hoosier R or A Compoound? Toyo RRs?

Just so Felton doesn't chew you out when you submit your classification form, "slicks" is mostly a term used for non-dot approved R-compound in the racing community. I think you are more referring to R compounds such a Hoosier/BFG/Toyos. All have wildly different points (and grip).

As someone who is moving their way up to through HPDE/TT, I suggest finding racer "takeoffs" for significantly reduced $$ I would sell BFGs with 90% of the grip and plenty of life left for 30% what they were new. I did that for a long while till I started winning tires, as the price for new tires hurts. (Just spent $1700 on a set of Hoosier A7s for the Z06)

Something around the A6 is what I was presuming to be "slicks". I've just seen a lot of people run them and have read up on them specifically. I doubt I'll make the jump to non-street tires until I get into or maybe a few events before at that point my car would be on a trailer. I will for sure look into takeoffs. Sounds like the best option when I'm ready to move up!

I guess I won't be getting aero. Just worried about esses and the left turn at the top of the esses, as well as, the braking zone coming off the back straight (slightly turning while braking) are more only concerns at VIR for this car. Summit, I'm not worried about aero or Dominion.

The lowest I would ever run is a 225 on a 9" wheel and that's a decent stretch, but at that point I'd be scared of way too stiff of a sidewall and it's snappy loss of grip. I'd guess for a slick it would make it even worse. Looks like I'll be heavy enough to warm up the tires like you all say. I just don't want to overheat and grease them. Thankfully these RE-11A's have a very high heat capacity, but take longer than what I'd like for them to warm up. Usually, on a 3rd auto-x run they are there. Then again they could probably warm up quicker with a faster driver.

To be honest I'm pretty lost when it comes to competitive race tires. Just have never done serious research across all brands.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 05-10-2015

I Finally have time to update this, but AutoPowerIndustries cages only fit hatchbacks... yeh... not. So now I'm screwed on ever getting a half cage. I'm guessing custom half cage/roll bar would be in the 1200 range on the cheap side and 1800 or so high end and be without a car for several days. No way to get back to Harrisonburg as I highly doubt there is a place to get it done there. Not sure if there is a place in Richmond that could do one? I'll be searching, but recommendations would be nice.

Thoughts on what to do or options if I decide I really want to go that route even with the trouble now?

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - navin - 05-10-2015

I'd try Kirk Racing as well to see if they have a bolt-in rollbar for your car: http://kirkracing.com/competition-bars.html

Fabrication wise, in Richmond there is AutoDynamix who did the cage on DJ's old m3.

Also did the weld-in roll bar on Mike D'Amico's M3.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - JustinG - 05-12-2015

Didn't he do the cage in your current car too?

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - D_Eclipse9916 - 05-12-2015

yup

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 05-28-2015

Took a trip to NJ and to visit NYC.

Was going about 40 on a back road in NJ near Allentown and come up to a blind hill and there is a large chunk of road just missing. Smashed the shit out of my car. Yeh. Shattered my fog light, popped my bumper off its tabs, and tore up my lip some more. Yeh!

Well I guess it is nature telling me to put brake ducts on my car soon haha. I'm going to have to say I'm super lucky here. At first I thought I was completely fucked. No oil leakage so far, tires and wheels look okay. Steering feels okay right now. Was pretty pissed for a few hours. I still don't know how much life is taken out all of the components on my car now. Car has been making some weird noises now it never did before. :finger:

Also, another awesome thing happened. On my 3rd parallel park in NJ I backed in. Started to pull forward and crunch. Wheel slightly curbed about an inch and a half on passenger side. Well at least both driver's and passenger side wheels are matched of curbage. Woo.

All in all, it wasn't the best trip for my car roads were fricken awful, but I had a lot of fun in NYC.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 06-01-2015

So, been driving on these tires on the highway 70+ in heavier rain several times now and I'd say slow down if you have these types of street tires (RS3, SSZ2, etc...). Even though these are supposed to be the best in class for wet grip (RE-11A) they still are sketchy at speed in heavy rain. Never felt so sketched out like I was almost hydroplaning for like a good few miles until a slowed down to around 60. Lighter rain these things do fine at anytime.

Also, I'm thinking my driver's side shock mount or assembly top is toast. It does not sound right. I have the tools to get the car up in the air, but I really might just want a place to go to take a look at it if anyone is generous enough.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - JustinG - 06-02-2015

I has a garage and tools....lemme know if you wanna bring it over and throw it in the air.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - Beej - 06-02-2015

Totally agree on the tires...since I've had R-S3's, I've come to think of "wet grip" differently than "handles standing water" - the latter of which I've found regular street tires to be way better at. Now that R-S3's are worn, I'm not really comfortable taking them out in much more than a drizzle.

Samesies on the garage offer.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 06-02-2015

Thank you both. Whenever one of together are free I have a jack + stands and a toolbox with me. I just don't want to go all out here at the apartment complex yet. I just moved in.

Yup, but yeah I was out that way. I took my talents from Norfolk to Richmond almost 2 (wtf where did they go) years ago.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 06-03-2015

So, in a last minute decision. I'm at the top of the waitlist in HPDE1. Hopefully NASA is able to find another instructor for this weekend.

I think I know what I'll be doing Friday though is helping old man Kaan out haha.

Hopefully everything will work out for this weekend

Don't forget your gopro and share it here.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - Kaan - 06-04-2015

i'll definitely take the help loading up the truck
