You get it stuck between the brace and the hole?

Must've done it putting it on last time, it came out fine.

Oh and I managed to get a bit further into this last night before discovering I don't have an E10 socket anymore, the only one I need to get the rear oil pan bolts out. Regrouping with trip #2 to Harbor Freight today and will hopefully make measurable progress tomorrow.

If I hadnt done 3 rod bearings job in the past couple months, I would be suggesting you to bring it over and do them. I am so sick of them.

Re: The Long Awaited: The Myth, The Legend, The Douchebagger - SlimKlim - 06-08-2016

Don't want to start going down that slippery slope anyway. I'm replacing the parts I already have in stock, nothing more unless the car can't go back together without it.

Re: The Long Awaited: The Myth, The Legend, The Douchebagger - SlimKlim - 06-09-2016

Huzzah! (Also, Holy Butts it feels weird to drop the subframe on this thing)

I assumed, like a dumbass, that my car would already have the oil pump nut fix done so I didn't bother to order one. Then I look up and see this.

Luckily Christina has a spare, so I'll get it from her this weekend and have slightly less downtime than if I needed to order one. I suppose I'll finish this up Sunday, and maybe get some gratuitous cleaning done in the meantime.

Re: The Long Awaited: The Myth, The Legend, The Douchebagger - *insertusernamehere* - 06-09-2016

Can you explain what the problem is with oil pump thing? This is the first time I've ever heard of this.

Re: The Long Awaited: The Myth, The Legend, The Douchebagger - SlimKlim - 06-09-2016

It is a known issue that the oil pump nut can loosen itself and come off, which causes an immediate loss in oil pressure and will most likely spin the bearings, if not cause additional damage. It seems like you're at a higher risk for it if you spin the car without getting the clutch in in time, but there really isn't any rhyme or reason to it. People either tack the nut on with a welder or you can drill a hole in it and safety wire it to the gear.

I don't trust myself to put a tiny hole in the corner of a hardened steel nut without a drill press so I'm gonna use one of the "kits" they sell, which Christina luckily has a spare for, so I dont even have to wait for it to come in the mail. Smile Car fams are the best fams.

Swallowed the frog last night and got under it to scrape all the nasty old gasket material and RTV off the underside of the block. I was dreading doing it but it turned out to not be so bad, the disadvantage of doing it on your back is somewhat cancelled out by the fact that you don't have to worry about bits falling in the engine.

Then I figured since I was down there I might as well try and clean up some of the gritty sludge that accumulated as a result of this oil pan leak, so I half-assedly wiped down the steering rack and subframe.

And I got the oil pan clean enough, considering its an oil pan.

Well I finished up the oil pan project one night last week, and on Friday night Lauren and I decided to take it to the grocery store about a mile away as a little test drive. As we pull into the parking lot something pops and the car starts to hemorrhage coolant.

We rush it home, and Lauren gets to experience first-hand the joys of shutting the car off and coasting to every stoplight, and granny shifting as early as possible to try and maximize airflow per rpm. Luckily I got it home before the temp needle started to move, and I discover this.

Fuck. A. Duck.

Luckily, if you could call it that, it's just some stupid temperature sensor that warms the throttle body in cold weather to help with emissions or some shit. so it can be deleted instead of replaced. So inbetween cleaning the house and cooking for a Father's Day BBQ, and hosting said BBQ, I ripped the intake manifold off the thing and capped the fittings on the head and throttle body.

*grumble*

I have yet to put the MAF and intake tube back on because I had to add to my shitty little superglue patch on that charcoal canister or whatever the hell it is and I wanted to let it cure, plus family was pretty much walking through the door. Still need to fill the coolant back up, bolt the cross brace on, perform an exorcism, and try to drive it again. Hopefully for longer than a mile without breaking down.

Then, assuming it doesn't throw any more hissy fits, I can try to see if the door handle I bought at the junkyard is going to be usable, and I really ought to go ahead and replace the $10 shifter cup so that it stops grazing the driveshaft going in or out of 5th gear. If I remember right I can get the actual shifter out of the carrier without too much fuss to replace that part, its removing the actual carrier that turns into a big PITA.

sssssshit! glad you were close to home dude...that is some Grade A butt-pucker scripting right there.

Re: The Long Awaited: The Myth, The Legend, The Douchebagger - SlimKlim - 06-20-2016

Yeah I could've made a diamond if I just had a lump of coal handy.

It's been worse though. Nothing compares to that one time I got gas in Harrisonburg on the way from my parents to NOVA and discovered the car was absolutely RAINING oil from this weird freeze plug fitting on the back of the oil filter housing. I had to keep stopping to top it up to get it home without running the oil out of it. I'm still convinced that if I hadn't needed gas when I did I would've lost the motor that night.

EDIT: This time, specifically: viewtopic.php?p=222695#p222695

I think that was officially my greatest buttpuckering moment in this car. Except maybe that time I almost put Jake and I into a Mercedes.

All that writing and all I'm curious about is more detail on the BBQ dinner lol

"Death by ML430" has a better ring to it than "Death by Elantra" - aka nearly every time I cross a street in DC.

But yeah that was a pretty big pucker moment.

You've got real problems if your VW is the most reliable car in the stable.

Well we've known that for years.

Re: The Long Awaited: The Myth, The Legend, The Douchebagger - SlimKlim - 06-27-2016

So in order to remove the lock tumblers from their handles you are supposed to have the original key, which will line up all the little wafers and let the thing rotate and fall right out.

I didn't have the original key. But I have tools. 2 hours later:

Then I removed this pot metal bullshit from the door. Some previous owner had the brilliant idea of epoxying the window into its track when they removed it, so even though I took out all of the bolts holding the glass into the regulator, it wasn't goin' anywhere, so I was forced to use a clamp to bend the bottom of the window out of the way as much as possible, which gave me exactly 1mm less than the space needed to get the handle out. Brute force ended up being the winning play.

There was a slight wiring discrepancy between the two handles, mine had what looked like two ground wires soldered directly to a plate on the back of the handle near the lock tumbler. The new one had no metal plate. I twisted the wires together so the ground loop would be closed as far as the car was concerned and rolled with it.

Putting the new one in was a thorough pain in the ass because of the aforementioned lack of space to work around the window. I got it popped up into the right place easily enough, but then spent what felt like two hours trying to get it the last 5mm so I could thread the locking collar on from the outside. I tried force, bargaining, begging, inspected everything I could with the flashlight, sent Jake panicky text messages. Nothing worked.

I went inside and took a shower before I broke something and did some soul searching. "Am I gonna have to take it to a shop? For the first time in seven years, is this the project I tap out on? No. Not over a goddamn door handle." I stormed out of the shower with a steely resolve and sure enough, discovered a nearly invisible metal tab inside the door requiring that you slide the handle forward to get around it. Emotional breakdown narrowly avoided.

Sunday I finished reassembling the guts of the door, which is a properly fiddly job because you need to hook in all the little rods that go to the interior handle, exterior handle and lock pin in the correct order. I put the exterior trim back on and hey look, a working door handle! I can park with the windows up again!

...But I can no longer lock the car from this side... I don't know if it has the do with the wiring discrepancy, the key doesn't even turn that direction. The power locks are still hooked up and working correctly, so now I just have to lock it from the trunk or passenger's door. :dunno: Better than how it was.

And the window makes a few new clicks and pops from being subjected to so much abuse. When that fails, I have no idea how I'm going to deal with it because of how someone glued that window into the track. Thanks previous owner.

And I also washed it for like, the first time in 2016.

Oh and the drain plug decided not to seal properly for some reason. I noticed a drop coming off of it when it was still in the air so I cleaned it up and verrrry gently snugged it up beyond the ~20ft-lb spec, but there was still a small spot on the garage floor this morning. I don't know if it just doesn't like the copper crush washer I used or what, but it's deeply irritating to still have it dripping after all of that fuss with the Oil Pan.

You used a clamp to bend the actual window? Are you some kind of superhero that can bend glass? Or you bent the window track?

The track. I'm not real proud of it but you gotta do what you gotta do.
