Yep, your right. I want my 500+ horsepower car for the street. Cant use an elise on the street, but sure as hell would have a lot of fun with a shelby gt500.

Compromise... street car pretending to be race car = lose
Race car and having a street car = win
Its like using compromise street/track pads for HPDEs. They suck for both.

Well, my reason is just bad timing Smile. 2-3 years ago, we weren't in family mode and I totally could have bought a cool coupe like this to have fun with. Now that I've started to procreate, I've had to re-prioritize things a bit for the short term. Of course, 2-3 years ago I wasn't as wise, so maybe I'm just making up another excuse :dunno: .

I think this pretty much sums up why cars like this don't succeed. There's a very thin slice of people who have enough money, aren't boy racers and don't have kids. Those are really the only people who would buy the car and they're in short supply.

Pretty much this. It needs to be either cheaper or bigger in order to succeed, and I honestly don't think it will. I mean, the reality is that I loooooooove the idea, but it just isn't practical in any sense of the word. Everyone I've talked to about this that could conceivably buy it is like 'yeah maybe.'

People forget that the Original AE86 GTS wasn't exactly a sales revolution. It was sold for 2 years in the US, and while the press thought it was a hoot to drive, nobody really bought it. And if you're looking for a successor for the AE86, toyota already made one, and it was pretty spectacular. I'm not sure exactly how the GT86/BRZ fits well into either of the company's offerings, but I guess we'll have to see.

I know I'm the original "New 86" hater, but I just don't see this going anywhere, as much as I would love for it to do so. Americans don't like small cars, they don't really like rear wheel drive cars and they aren't going to be blown away by it's specs. I predict a 4 year run, after which toyota abandons it and Subaru builds a new "sub compact" AWD hatch to it's lineup.

So what you're saying is...the market is not BEGGING. Fanbois who won't buy it are begging.

You can't use a light, tossable hoot-to-drive-under-60mph car on the street, but you can use a fatass, 180mph highway missile? I think you have that backwards Mr. Fitz [Image: nuts.gif]

I have to agree with Evan, comparing it with FWD this or used AWD that is borderline asinine. I wouldn't directly correlate the AE86's sales performance of forever ago with this new offering. The old car was a...Corolla. Marketed to whoever would buy them, usually middle aged secretaries. This is a whole new ball game.

And whether or not you guys realize it, we're collectively not the auto marketing agents wet dream. We're all either broke college students or 30yr old baby makers (with me and DJ's crack smoking doppelganger in the middle). I look at it this way - this is a Mazda Miata with a roof. And that car is still selling by the bajillions to a whole diverse group of people, and I'm sure at least some will sway to this. This is really going to be the only viable alternative in the sub 30k, RWD, sports car market so it may just succeed by default. It'll survive on the boy racer market, on the thriving Scion brand, and we should all be so lucky that it actually sounds like a decent enthusiast vehicle as well, but instead we're bitching about brand names and horsepower ratings

Not to beat a dead horse, but I think you're all wrong.

For those that signed up to be one of the first 86 owners, Scion will be flying them out to Cali for a launch event:

Re: The market is BEGGING.... - Evan - 03-27-2012

autoblog and motortrend have reviews too, im too lazy to link.
press impressions of the car are overwhelmingly positive, and that its a fantastic drivers car.

majority of article comments and forum chatter still takes after DJ
"WTF its slow, unless it has 456hp my boyfriend wont be impressed and he wont let me pitch tonight so Im buying a mustang."
(paraphrased Tongue )

at least we know it will be the un-douchebag car.

lol driver's car.........for the street. Glad you have all that feel and lightness...so that you can feel those potholes and really feel into the car behind that 18 wheeler. :dunno:

Eh at least its quick enough in the corners so that you have all that swiftness to swing out of the way when a camry comes flying by

Im a hater, we all know that. Different strokes for different folks.

Re: The market is BEGGING.... - G.Irish - 03-27-2012

To be fair, I think the Mustang is a fine car and is a good alternative for people who want more straight line speed at the cost of driving dynamics and weight. I am a bit disappointed by the Scion's pricing. I thought it was going to 2 or 3k cheaper than the Subaru.

Can't wait to get out and drive one of these.

Re: The market is BEGGING.... - caa337 - 03-27-2012

I forgot where I read this but a subaru rep/tech said something about a 280 hp version in the near future? Hopefully there are enough sales for them to proceed with different versions(even if girls do buy them I don't care.)

Re: The market is BEGGING.... - JPolen01 - 03-27-2012

There is so much internet fanboi hype that who knows whats true. The car was a concept for what, 4-5 years? I'll believe it when I see it.

yeah that was in the autoblog review, the reviewer talked to the program manager of the vehicle and said that. if it actually happens, who knows.
Personally Im fine with 2700 lbs and 200hp.
