- Dave - 05-13-2008 It would be rediculous to do the work for a K-series motor, considering it will cost more than the whole damned car and would be about as fast/reliable as a boosted B18. Aside from getting a turbo setup for your current motor, what about a GSR motor? I imagine they are getting a little cheaper as the years go by, though the price/performance would probably be dismal compared to a homemade turbo kit. The only thing I'll point out would be that if you are going to b00st your engine and then track it, heat & fuel management will be a must, and I would recommend mapping out good intake and exhaust piping and doing a lot of research on the swarm of turbos out there to keep yourself from having a setup that comes on with a metric shit-ton of power/torque at exactly the wrong time (mid-turn)... The K20 may very well be a great engine for making big power, but you probably have to replace the entire drivetrain and rotating assembly to get there. Mike's probably lucky if he has 150 hp right now, and I bet he'd have more than enough power from the 225 or so he could get from a well-balanced, inexpensive turbo setup (ok, i pulled that number out of my ass, but no street-driven FWD econobox needs 500+hp). - D_Eclipse9916 - 05-14-2008 Naw your right dave, the average simple non built LS boosted motor (at least in a TON of my friends) puts down around 230whp, and 180lb/ft of torque. However, most of em had small little nitpicky issues all the fucking time (welcome to boost). I say do the K, for that kind of power? Fuck messing with turbos, it would be worth the money to do the KA to forget the headaches, get a stock lsd in the tranny along with a six-speed, and have something thatll run forever in the stock powerband. Instead of....piecing together turbo kit, more heat, more tuning issues, boost leaks, 5-speed non-lsd ls trans, less displacement, more mileage on a b18, and always the chance of a tune going wrong, boost spike, etc. taking it out. Its like comparing an ls7 to say....2jz, sorry goodspeed. Id rather have something that has the power always, and dont have to worry about all the small things that can go wrong in turbo setups. - Dave - 05-14-2008 I agree, the NA powerband has a certain appeal and is simple, and a turbo system can be pretty complex and requires a lot of precision if you do it correctly, but considering the massive difference in $spent/performance, I'll stand by my vote for the turbo over the K motor. I guess we might as well throw a supercharger into the fray. I don't really know much, but seems you don't need an intercooler quite as much and there are kits readily available. Sort your fuel system and go have some fun with a nice powerband and good torque? - Andy - 05-14-2008 Why are you guys even discussing this? It's taken Mike more than year to fix his seatbelt situation. In fact, it still isn't fixed. He will never go through the expense of a K-motor and he's tooooo lazy to fool with the inherit complications from a turbo. Lastly, Track SantaÔäó only needs his sled once a year

I think it's worth it if you're looking to add power to go the NA route *for a daily driver* unless you've driven a pieced-together turbo-kitted daily driver before and are fine with the quirks and problems you're going to run into... a lot. Most guys out there that say their turbo'd project "has no issues" or is "reliable" usually just ignore the downsides they're facing every day or are in denial of what they're dealing with heh. - Mike - 05-14-2008 Andy Wrote:Why are you guys even discussing this? Lastly, Track SantaÔäó only needs his sled once a year right, which is why i said it was a pipe dream. still fun to see people talk it out i think once i put in the b16 trans, i'll be a bit more happy.dave, based on the dyno at the last car show, i'm at 123/118... a tiny tiny bit more than a stock motor. oh and i'm running very rich. i should probably get a tune and that trans, some quality bolt-ons and be done... the car would then be a decent h2 car if i ever decide to go that route. - BLINGMW - 05-14-2008 In that case, I think you should go ITBs and megasquirt. Mill the head to the service limit and run 98 octane. - Dave - 05-14-2008 BLINGMW Wrote:In that case, I think you should go ITBs and megasquirt. Is there a wattage printed on the ballast? I noticed that the guy didn't have one in his description. I've been interested in HIDs for the DRZ for a while, in the interest of cutting electricity consumption, but so far I haven't found anything I'm quite happy with. - Mike - 05-23-2008 yes, the civic uses an h4 hi/lo. if you want hid hi/lo it is an extra $35, but for hid low and regular high, it's regular price. i'll look at the wattage when i get home. - Evan - 05-23-2008 maximum legal wattage on HIDs is 35w, but some kits let you run 50w I wouldnt put HIDs in reflector housings but Ive been thinking of putting them in my foglight projectors to keep them from melting - Mike - 05-23-2008 nobody else has had problems with melting so i'm not too worried about it... this guy has like 50+ pages of mostly sales. - Evan - 05-23-2008 yeah, i mean my stock foglight bulbs melt the housings, i want to put in HIDs to keep them from melting. - Ginger - 05-23-2008 Evan Wrote:I wouldnt put HIDs in reflector housings but Ive been thinking of putting them in my foglight projectors to keep them from melting I had also thought of pulling the headlight, mounting a couple fogs in its place, and putting a backplate behind them so that I wouldn't have the reflector issues... no decision yet, though. - Mike - 05-23-2008 Evan Wrote:yeah, i mean my stock foglight bulbs melt the housings, i want to put in HIDs to keep them from melting. gotcha. - Mike - 05-24-2008 they are 35w. - Ginger - 05-24-2008 Cool; thanks, Mike. - Mike - 05-30-2008 So on my last tank of gas, I got 21mpg. The car used to get 34-40. I'm thinking the front o2 sensor isn't doing its job very well... That also may be why the car runs pig rich. Picked one up from Advance, but search says Bosch is shit. Need to find a Denso or NGK locally. I also threw on some blingin' red muteki lugnuts. Mainly ordered because I loaned my key out and it has been fun trying to get it back. The lugnuts rock functionally, but the red is already coming off of them. The black hid this problem much better (or it simply didn't come off... I don't know). Ummm and then I finally took off my track pads and replaced them with some Wearever Silvers. Bling! Hope to lower the front end this weekend and install an ITR tranny. - Beej - 05-30-2008 Mike Wrote:...because I loaned my key out and it has been fun trying to get it back...Went out priority mail on Wednesday. :dunno: |
