Short sleeve business shirts look pretty ridiculous. I'd much rather have a long sleeve shirt on no matter the temperature.

Same. Roll up the sleeves if it's hot.

I've always been a long sleeve rolled up a turn or two for daily office shenanigans, but that didn't work show off my matching shirt and socks

It was in the 40s in Idaho and 50s in Chicago. If I'm at corporate or most client meetings, I'm suited up anyway no matter if it's 20 in Michigan or 1000000000 in Dallas

Watching MARS on Nat Geo, only 30 min in and I am loving it.

Ron Howard was involved, blend of explaining current technology and then shoots forward to "real time" of actually making it to Mars.

Would recommend if you are a nerd like 90% of us.

Unfortunately like a lot of other people, 2016 has been a real motherfucker of a year for me, on a personal level as well as the whole Trump/Brexit thing. Losing my grandfather was just one of 2016's surprises for me.

When I saw my grandmother this week she said he wanted me to have his retirement watch. It's a 30 year old Seiko Chronograph. The inscription reads "From your friends at the Quincy MGT Club". He worked at the shipyard in Quincy, MA for the majority of his career after he got out of the Navy. My grandmother said he would wear a sport coat and this watch at any opportunity, even if it meant he'd be the only guy at the dinner wearing a coat.

It's obviously nothing special in the watch world, but it's now my most valued possession. I'm going to take it to a jewelry shop this afternoon because there is something rattling in the case, and I'll have them put it in a new battery and give it a good cleaning. I'd eventually like to have it replated because the original gold plating is wearing off the case and bezel, but I'll have them leave the clasp alone so I can always see some of the marks he put on it. I'm guessing completely stripping and replating a watch isn't a cheap proposition so it wont happen any time soon, will just be worn and treasured as is.

On a superficial note I'd never have the balls to buy an all-gold watch but I feel pretty fuckin' boss wearing it. It's definitely a statement piece.

Dude I am so sorry to hear about your grandfather, our condolences. However that is a very cool story and a very cool piece! This is the embodiment of what watches mean to the wearer; they often evoke emotions, memories or stories of the former owner that are simply hard to replicate any way else. I would do the battery / movement service (you can send it to Seiko for this) and even a cleaning but I would strongly encourage you not to have any refinishing work done. The character marks and such are part of this watch's story. And although the value in this watch is going to be entirely intrinsic and personal to you, a good rule of thumb for vintage watches is that the more original character / natural wear marks they have on the case the better! Trust me, clean and service it and remember why your grandfather wore it and why he gave it to you. This one actually hits my feels pretty hard because I have been slowly building a short list of examples for my "retirement watch" over the last few years and I can't wait for the day when I am finally done burning the candle from both ends and can pull the trigger on a piece that means that much to me. And hopefully hand that down to my children / grandchildren!

On that feels note, I finally pulled the trigger on a tritium watch. I told myself I was going to "thin the herd" (ie sell an old one) any time I picked up a new watch going forward, but my brother said he and my mother would split this as my Christmas gift and I could "open" it when they get down here in December Smile I went ahead and grabbed it because Deep Blue is having a Cyber Monday sale on top of the current discounted price, including discounted shipping that made it a no brainer. I had such a great experience with the Air Blue watch I purchased and had been eyeing their other pieces for a while, so here are the details:

Deep Blue Daynight Diver T100 Automatic (green bezel! tons of other colors to choose from though) <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.deepbluewatches.com/daditaussgrd.html">http://www.deepbluewatches.com/daditaussgrd.html</a><!-- m -->
45mm, 300m water resistance, AR coated sapphire, screw down caseback and crown, same Seiko auto movement with date as my SKX007, ISOFRANE style rubber bracelet (I have heard it's super comfy but if it sucks I have a million other straps I can change it to) and T100 tritium tubes: 12 O'clock = 2 Yellow Tubes ,1-11 Hour Markers = Blue Tubes, Hour, Minute,Second Hand and Bezel Pip = Yellow Tubes.

Tritium lume has fascinated me and at this price point for T100 (brightest tritium I have seen on watches) you definitely can't go wrong. Basically tritium gas is encapsulated in small glass tubes with a phosphor layer and as the tritium decays it causes the phosphor to constantly glow. Similar technology to tritium night sights on firearms. The benefit is that it constantly glows day and night without needing to be charged by light....hugely beneficial for me with as much airplane travel as I do, or just for checking the time at night so I don't have to pull my phone out of my pocket. Tritium decays in about 20 years, ie stops glowing, and leaves a really nice yellowed patina in the tubes (a few old Rolex models had this and it gives the watch a lot of character). Here's more detail if you want to nerd out on it: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tritium_illumination">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tritium_illumination</a><!-- m -->

Pics! I went with the green bezel variant because it's different than anything else I have and I think it looks sharp:

If you browse their site and see anything you like, use the email insider code "CYBER" for another 40% off of whatever the listed prices are and choose "Cyber Shipping" for another small shipping discount. That watch is normally just under $500 with shipping, I scooped it for just over $200 shipped. Smile

Re: Guilty pleasures... you know you've got them! - SlimKlim - 11-28-2016

I will definitely take my time with the decision. I know generally speaking when it comes to antiques the best course of action is to leave it as is.

However, the damage on the case of this thing isn't because he used it a lot, its because its a 30 year old Seiko that wasn't really built to last. The plating on the case and bezel is discolored and peeling and just doesn't look very nice on close inspection. The wear on the clasp is a different story, the gold is worn off where he rubbed his wrist on stuff, and no matter what that will stay like it is.

At any rate, it's going to Herndon Clock & Watch Repair tomorrow just for a service and cleaning. He's been in business for ages and generally works on much higher end stuff, so it seems like the most trustworthy place to bring it. They offer full restoration services so I'll get his opinion on it and a rough idea of what something like that would actually cost.

Nice, post an update after you get it back...I am super curious to hear their thoughts / pricing on restoration and the details / pics of the service. That reminds me that I should probably get some of my automatics in for servicing at some point

Any tritium watch for 200 is a smoking deal. The export controls on 3H are stupid, and make tritium-based illumination products about twice as expensive as they oughta be. We should have tritium backlighting on our goddam phones but nooooooooooooooooooooooo

Re: Guilty pleasures... you know you've got them! - WRXtranceformed - 12-01-2016

Tritium watch showed up and I opened it up and tried it on to make sure it was well represented (even though it's a Christmas gift and I wasn't supposed to :p) Pheew it's a beast! Definitely not got the faint of heart if you aren't into thick, heavy watches. That surprised me a bit as it has the same movement basically as my SKX which is much lighter and smaller. The rubber bracelet is comfortable but probably part of that. Fortunately I have a bunch of spare 22mm NATOs that should fit it perfectly and lighten the load a little.

The T100 tritium lume is awesome, really bright and noticeable and the tiny tritium tubes in the 12 o'clock pip are a nice touch!! As always with DBs watches this one is overbuilt and looks excellent. Should give me many years of service Smile I'll post up some more pics when I'm officially allowed to wear it

As far as watches go, I'm really digging The Guardian from Shinola. Dare I? Gray, cream, white!? Interested mostly for experimental purposes. Will these take my game to the next level or not?

Dude! Could you be coming around??

Reading the specs, that would be a great foray into the micro watch brand world. Good, in-house quartz movement that is supposedly good for +/- 1 sec day, sapphire crystal and 41.5mm is a reasonable sized case...it shouldn't wear really big on your wrist. I've seen a few Shinolas on some coworkers in the wild and they look great imo.

If you are looking to pull the trigger on one let me know, their CEO spoke at our company conference this year and offered up the partner program pricing (30% off) to all employees which runs it looks like through Dec 20. I just signed up for the discount login page and can give you the details.

Re: Guilty pleasures... you know you've got them! - Mike - 12-08-2016

Ooooh yeah, hook it up. 30% off would likely push me over the edge. Leaning gray btw. I guess you pick your strap at checkout?

Edit: Or straps sold separately? This shit is bonkers. Give me a casio calculator watch.

I'll PM you here in a sec. It should include whatever strap is listed but you can buy straps separately if you ever want to change them out (super easy with the right tool, I do it all the time)
