Ok, shitbox track/autox cars dont work. This is whats going to happen - you guys will buy the shitbox car, put some time/$$ into it, autox it maybe 3 times and then realize "wow this thing is more busted than we thought for track use" and then discard the project for cheap and be back at square one, only with less time and money than you had before.
The GRM 20xx challenge cars only have to last for what, 3 dragstrip runs and 3 autox runs? And half of them require some kind of major component parts swap between the two, like a transmission that blew up. Busted track/autox cars are not worth the hassle. You spend more time fixing shit than you do driving and enjoying it, which is double frustration when it happens at the track.
If you're set on this then at least buy an E30. You can probably find a car thats in good shape with a busted timing belt or something for dirt cheap, a cheap cylinder head to fix it (or a cheap M50), and probably a free parts car to tear down for spares. And there are plenty of E30 racers in the race paddock with spares.
Did boobies ever sell his E30 project?

If you want to drive, then find someone in the area to work out a co-driving arrangement with for the season.

i don't have a link to offer but keep an '85 RX7 GSL-SE in mind. cheap, light, simple, RWD. the GSLSE's have disk brakes and fuel injection. having a hatch and a spec class ain't bad either, and when the rotard blows, put a ford 302 in it.

Its not a half bad option, but parts and engines are getting much harder to find. Spec RX7 is all but dead.
Oh, and they handle like shit. That can be entertaining in some ways though.

And I feel like captain obvious here, but GRM challenge is utter bullshit. Dont look at those cars and think "oh...look what I can have for $2k and some elbow grease!" None of the top cars are actually anwhere remotely near $2000 cost. Fudging numbers and outright lying is the order of the day for top GRM cars.
A V8 miata with rollcage, racetires, and paint job for $2000. bull motherfucking shit.

Yeah, you probably need $6-8k of capital to get the ball rolling and then some funny math to get you back down to "$2000"... assuming you can fabricate all of your own shit and you have a bunch of raw material around that you can claim for 'free'.

But, Rex and I have been through this and his budget is currently less than I can sell it for. He has yet to see the light take me up on the "Buy it at my price and get your $$ back by selling what you don't want."

Agreed with the others, a 2k car is going to be more trouble than its worth, unless you find some absolutely stupid steal. Dave's 240 or Chris's E30 seem to be ridiculously up your alley for not too much more $$$.
Or, you know, the answer is always Miata. Find a clean, running NA for $3-4k, invest about that much in new (remember, everything for Miatas is cheap) or used equipment and have a rolling easy button for $6-7.

What's competitive and potentially cheap nowadays? Reduce your search to that. If you really think you're going to stick with AX, you want something that isn't going to suck competition-wise.

Y not build something for STX, street tires, cheaper cars (hi-mileage rx8s and e36 325is)? It may cost more up front but in the long run will cost you less and a whole shit ton less time than a piece of crap.
