Why is that? The decision to do a timing belt was probably one out of smoothness and to make the "mechanical" sound of the engine quieter.

Its also because a split cylinder design necessitates the belt most of the time when you have an overhead cam motor. Its a whole 'nother world than your cam in the middle of the block.
