Re: WTB: Diesel truck - SlimKlim - 08-30-2011 Dave Wrote:SlimKlim Wrote:If you get a 7.3L plug that shit in the second it gets below freezing. My dad bought one almost new back in 2000 and its been pretty much completely faithful for the past 11 years and 130k miles, but that bitch cannot and will not cold start if it gets too cold. The glow plugs just aren't enough to get the juices flowing.I disagree. While plugging it in will certainly make it start easy, it will start just fine if you cycle the glow plugs a few times. I only drive my truck a few times a month and in the coldest days of the winter it has not given me any problems with starting when I needed it. We've been stranded because our 7.3 decided not to start. Granted it was sub-zero, which I think poses a challenge for most diesels, but the only way we got ours going was having it towed to the bottom of the mountain, and sitting it in some old mechanics shop and stoking his woodburning stove for a few hours. We also had a lot less extreme experiences of it taking ages to get going when it's in the 20's or below. Taking 5-6 times to start if it wasn't plugged in. We started just plugging it in all the time and it starts no problem. Re: WTB: Diesel truck - Jeff - 08-30-2011 12v is all mechanical. There are no electric controls or pumps. Very easy to tune and get tons of torque. There really is nothing to go wrong on them and when it does happen they are cheap to fix. A 200,000 mile 12v cummins engine is worth like $2000 by itself. The 24 is almost the same way as long as the truck has had the lift pump conversion done. The only additional worry is the cummins controller could take a dump and the pump (high pressure pump) is not as stout but the 24 does make more power. Re: WTB: Diesel truck - HAULN-SS - 08-30-2011 Found a possible on ebay in woodstock - anyone of you guys around there recognize it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1997-f-250-7-3L-powerstroke-diesel-4wd-supercab-w-plow-/170688967887?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item27bddaf4cf Re: WTB: Diesel truck - .RJ - 08-30-2011 " it was used almost exclusively as a plow truck" Run away. Re: WTB: Diesel truck - Jeff - 08-30-2011 If you want to get me his info I can go look at the thing for you. Re: WTB: Diesel truck - Steve85 - 08-30-2011 "it was used almost exclusively as a plow truck" - I immediately thought rust. The rest of the ad is - things replaced that would be subject to excessive rust from driving on salty roads and then sitting for months. If you check this thing out, bring a screwdriver and poke, a lot. Re: WTB: Diesel truck - Jeff - 08-30-2011 I would be more worried about the front end really. But he says all is new. Like I said, I will check it out for you if needed. I don't recognise the truck, which is odd for a small town but maybe it sits around a lot. Re: WTB: Diesel truck - HAULN-SS - 08-30-2011 I might go check it out - i will let you know. Emailed the guy. According to what I've read, its not unusual for these to need new front-end goodies, regardless of plow status. Being that it was already replaced, that's fine. If its not all eat up with rust, it could be a decent truck. 118 is really low miles for these..i mean..how much plowing could they have done? It's not like they were plowing state roads with it..maybe they meant they didnt do any towing or use it as a "work truck" in the off-season. Cool - will let you know if he gets back to me on my ebay email Re: WTB: Diesel truck - D_Eclipse9916 - 08-30-2011 HAULN-SS Wrote:118 is really low miles for these..i mean..how much plowing could they have done? You mean hours of low-speed pushing on the chassis, transmission, rear end, cooling system without airflow? I would run far away. Re: WTB: Diesel truck - Ryan T - 08-30-2011 I'm with everyone else, plow truck? run away, far far away. Transmission takes tons of abuse from lots of low speed shifting under load, lots of pushing heavy weight with the radiator and coolers blocked from sufficient air flow, batteries and alternators take tons of stress from the constant electrical draw, all your joints are under pressure all the time. I see that he says they are "new", but how "new" are they? Replaced them 3 seasons ago? 5 seasons ago? I've heard guys say owning a plow truck is like having controlled low speed crashes every minute for 8 hours a day. I'd feel better driving a 200k mile non-plow 7.3 than I would a 100k mile plow truck 7.3. Re: WTB: Diesel truck - HAULN-SS - 08-31-2011 Well the plow truck is a non issue now. The guy decided he isnt going to sell it for a few months because he got a job out of town Re: WTB: Diesel truck - HAULN-SS - 09-08-2011 http://york.craigslist.org/cto/2582649714.html Kinda want to buy this. If It was like a grand cheaper I think I'd be on it. Ive actually been kinda torn while looking at all these trucks trying to decide if I should buy a complete project, a regular ole DD type truck, or one that needs nothing. This truck looks like it almost needs nothing. The fender over the rear wheel has a little something that has been patched looks like. I have seen these trucks with those miles and in immaculate shape going for 14-15k. Maybe I could buy one like this and flip it? Re: WTB: Diesel truck - CaptainHenreh - 09-08-2011 Dad said he'd take 6500 for his truck. 4WD, 6.5 Turbo diesel, everything works fine. Can't remember the year. Power windows, and 140k miles? I think? Bed is in roughish shape due to the dump bed being present, but it's not too bad. He's also installed a snowplow kit, but he's never used it. So if you want the dump bed, another 2500. Plow kit, additional 2500. Just the truck, 6500. Lemme know if you want pictures or whatever. If all clears, might try to pick it up this weekend Re: WTB: Diesel truck - HAULN-SS - 09-28-2011 http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/2587385463.html this checked out with autocheck..going to go check it out in person FYI that ebay truck sold before I could get there to look at it, the next day! Fuck..missed a good deal =\ Only thing wrong iwth this black truck is the damn stacks..but maybe i can sell them and put it back to stock or something..or just keep them, and blend in in WV Re: WTB: Diesel truck - Jeff - 09-28-2011 I'm looking at a 90 Cummins this weekend....excited for some DZL! Re: WTB: Diesel truck - HAULN-SS - 09-28-2011 Were you looking for 2WD? I saw a couple more lately, one was 2WD, and the other was painted in John Deere colors so I didnt link them Re: WTB: Diesel truck - Jeff - 09-28-2011 Yeah that JD one is ugly as hell and he wants like $5500! I am talking with a real reasonable fellow on a 4x4. So I am pretty stoked if I can get the cash I am gonna go after the thing ASAP.
