That is ridiculous. I'd calmly look the judge right in the eye and explain to him that you are sorry, learned your lesson, won't ever do it again and would hope to advance in your chosen career of joining the military to fight for other American's freedoms :evileye:

I seriously doubt a judge will do that to you, but good luck.

The thing that makes this tricky is because Im already in the National Guard. Im trying to contract with ROTC which would make me nondeployable until after I finish college and receive my commission as an officer active duty. If I no longer can contract, I have a plane ticket to Afghanistan or Iraq next year as a PVT with the Virginia National Guard. They say only 1/3 of all college students deployed return to college when they return from a deployment. Thats why I want to get my degree knocked out of the way. Which is why Im taking this thing so seriously. Its pretty amazing how something so minor can decide your entire future... Im hoping though I can still contract after I undergo some type of punishment (probably a long smoke session or few). Ill know in another couple hours after the meeting.

Im not trying to belittle something that is a big source of stress for you, but honestly its not a big deal, at all and will not affect your future. This is coming from someone who went through the exact same thing (if not a little worse) and has the highest security clearance.

I'm with Evan, as long as you work hard you will have a great future. Now if you got caught molesting little girls and got felony child abuse charges, then I think you should be a little more concerned about who's going to hire you.

Shit man you just got a drunk in public. Do you know how many people get drunk in public? Tons, that's why it's one of the lowest level misdemeanors.

Besides, I'm surprised that the military is being so picky about who they're allowing to become officers. That is not exactly the most popular career choice nowadays, I would negotiate the shit out of any military position I would consider just like any other job. My two best friends are my bosses and I negotiated like crazy with regards to my position. And they KNOW my record

Actually, the military's ranks have swollen considerably due to the recent layoffs and unemployment increases in the past year; people gotta pay their bills and the military is a good option. So, theoretically, they could be picky. I'm not saying they are, but if you do ROTC in college you are coming out as an officer so you are automatically held to a higher level of accountability than somebody fresh out of boot camp.
I agree that DIP isn't something that should ruin your life, and that you shouldn't be stressing out about it b/c it's so minor, but I'm happy to see how seriously you're taking it b/c it means you actually care and will probably think twice next time you might be tempted to put yourself in a position to jeopardize your future [end old man rant]

Hey man, I know this topic has been dead for a bit but I was just curious if you had been to court yet? What did the judge give you? I know that all of the cases I have in my two counties for 1st offense underage possession get a deferred judgement. Everyone I have gets 12 months probation, some fines and 50 hours of community service. If you do all that and don't get into any more trouble the charge is dropped off your record completely. Just wonderin.

Actually you would be surprised....

The officer and my attorney worked out a deal given my ROTC/National Guard situation and I had to do 50 hours of community service before court. The judge dismissed the charges and my record is once again clean. I somehow survived it. Cost me some money but not my career. Im extremely happy.

Re: Umm..yeah...need advice - BLINGMW - 10-18-2010

let me just say, after wasting my entire Saturday, that DIP class is torture. Cruel and unusual punishment. As someone with driving instructor experience (both NASA and a great teen driving school) it was my own personal hell. :vomit: I would have rather gone to jail for the day. SERIOUSLY. Thank god you can only do it every 10 years. Next time, if it's something minor and the ticket is less than $500, and they offer me DIP, I'll say here's the money cya later.
