A reason they probably "detune" the engine is so that it doesn't detract from sales of the V6 model. Why would you spend a few extra thousand dollars for just a few more HP? VW did this when they released the 1.8T engine in the US so it wouldn't canibalize sales from the VR6, 150hp vs. 174hp. You can easily chip tune ~40hp out of a 1.8T, I'm sure the same or better can be done for the Hyundai engine provided they use a turbo that is bigger than your fist! Also that 100,000 mile warranty. If they comprimise reliability they have to eat the cost of repairs for 10 years. Just my $.02 Smile

So, it appears the Genesis is a bit detuned!

Quote:Although the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is offered with an optional V6, it's likely that the turbocharged 2.0T version is destined to be the more popular choice. It's less expensive and lighter, plus it's got a happy spinny thing under the hood known as a turbo. And when it comes to tuning potential, a turbo is hard to beat.

We tested a bone stock Genesis Coupe 2.0T on MD Automotive's Dynojet chassis dyno located in Westminster, CA. Hyundai says its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generates 210 hp and 223 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel, and like most factory ratings for turbo cars, those numbers are a bit on the conservative side.

Hit the jump to see the dyno chart and other discoveries.

Peak torque arrives at 2500 rpm and then peters out all the way to redline. Clearly, Hyundai's prioritiy in crafting this type of power delivery was to ensure the Genesis Coupe 2.0T felt responsive around town.

This run was performed in fourth gear. Third gear produced a lower peak torque value since the engine would "outrun" the turbo--the engine revved through 2500 rpm quicker than the turbo could provide the requisite boost.

Here's something to help prop up that torque curve at higher engine speeds. When we were strapping the car down to the dyno roller, we saw this:

As if the Genesis 2.0T's two catalysts bricks and dual mufflers weren't providing enough exhaust backpressure, the company's engineers went ahead and smashed the exhaust down for good measure. Okay, it's that way to provide miles of clearance for the chassis brace underneath, but that it further reduces dangerous horsepower is like a gimmie for tuners.

That giant dent in the exhaust makes my head hurt.

Agreed. It's also giving tuners a boner right now.

- Evan - 03-18-2009

speaking of boner, Id love to see Hyundai take the Genesis coupe, shrink the wheelbase, take out some of the upmarket luxo G37 wannabe stuff, make it cheaper and call it the next Tiburon.

- Ginger - 03-18-2009

Don't mind Evan, he just wants Hyundai Miata.

- Evan - 03-18-2009

hyundai turbo hardtop miata

- Sijray21 - 03-20-2009

so i decided to check out the main hyundai site for the coupe and stumbled upon their editing contest thing. i think it's kinda cool that you can do this - check it out, here's the short clip i made :-P

Hyundai needs to remake this commercial:

somewhat on/off topic. My family and I eat at "the korean house" in charlottesville quite a bit and for some reason we were asking the waitress how to say curse words in korean. She told us that theres a new up and coming curse word in korean. Supposedly the first car "korea" tried to make (i think she was referring to hyundai) was the genesis. These cars were god awful supposedly and smoked profusely and were general pieces of crap. So the korean word for Genesis (She {something}) is now a curse word. By the looks of this genesis hopefully it doesnt have the same problems! if it sucks just as bad maybe well start saying "GENESIS!!!" instead of dammit.

- Mike - 03-23-2009

uh, the genesis has been out for a bit and it doesn't suck.

- Maengelito - 03-23-2009

he might've been talking about this:

well the lady straight from the mother land of korea told me the story, just passing it on, i seem to remember her saying the car was from the 70s/80s i could be wrong tho (chances are it was a korea only type thing)

- Mike - 03-23-2009

i'm saying the current genesis has been out for a bit. it doesn't suck. the chassis is proven, the V6 is proven, hyundai has proven over the past decade they know what they're doing...

the only new thing is the T, which i'm going to wager they'll get right given their track record. the motor it's going on has been around for a while.

So, the genesis is not a CNT MGNT?

you speak too clearly and use too much punctuation.

your face uses too much punctuation

I have no idea why, but the "your face" comebacks always make me laugh. Carry on.
