That's how FWD cars are modded to hook up. There's an SRT4 on the Mustang Forums with those types of mods who runs mid-low 11s and cuts 60's similar to or better than a lot of RWD cars. Move along sir k! - REED - 01-31-2009 Looks good man, old GTis are such a classic, good looking car. BMW urban green? I tkae it that is from the motorcycle line? - navin - 01-31-2009 Urban Green is off the Z4.. - REED - 02-02-2009 really? i've never seen it, at least in person - CaptainHenreh - 02-02-2009
- balactm - 02-02-2009 to bring it back on topic...paul's car looks way better than the z4. - Jake - 02-02-2009 balactm Wrote:to bring it back on topic...paul's car looks way better than the z4. x1,000,000. - Paul - 02-05-2009 Thanks for the comments guys!! The engine bay was actually painted by the previous owner. I really liked the color a lot so I kept it that way. I go to nearly all of the VW shows on the east coast, and I have never seen one this color. It won't be painted immediatly but hopefully after this show seaon. Talk about hooking up in a FWD car, here is my buddies Rabbit which makes close to 300whp. I don't have the 60 foot time but he has coilovers, LSD, and 23" slicks. We do adjust the suspension for a different stance at the track and to accommodate the taller slicks. Here is a video of it in action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5HAYWhdPN4 - Paul - 02-10-2009 Looks like I'm getting out of Harrisonburg this weekend!! So that means car work will be done this weekend!!!!! I'm gonna try to get some phresh shots of the new progress!!!!! - balactm - 02-10-2009 excellent. can't wait to see the progress! - Paul - 02-15-2009 Well, got outta the burg, but didn't get to wrench on the Rabbit. Guess it will have to wait for spring break which is only a few weeks away. Then it's really go time!!!! - BLAIR - 03-10-2009 been getting alot done the past 2 days.. she will be alive soon - vpfinnersw - 03-17-2009 wow, really impressive build. that is definitely one frankenstein VW with all those different parts. it's a rabbiscirrocado. lol hope to see you out at the VW shows this year. oh, and i remember talking to you at last years MM show about the vr6 caddy; can't wait to see the progress/build page on that hock:
- Paul - 03-23-2009 haha, yeah, really is a frankenstein of a car. Parts from all the hot rod VW's and I make the rest myself. I'll def be at all the shows this year, starting with Bugout which I really hope my car makes it to. BUT, here is what everyone has been waiting for. I finally got some decent wrenchin done on the beast over spring break. On Saturday I finished up most of the wiring and did some electrical test to varify the wiring swap into the car. Everything seems to be fine, got the ECU powered up and lights all checked out. But on Monday I made some visual progress which I will share below. Got some bits and pieces tied up under the hood. Got the coolant by-pass hoses taken care of. This took some thought but all in all turned out well. I got these trick hose clamps that you shrink with a heat gun to clamp the hose, really looks clean! New water pump, thermostat and alternator installed. Got all the brakes hooked up and bled out, got the clutch slave cylinder installed and bled. The linkage I fabbed up worked great, clutch feels nice. Made the last stainless steel line for the oil cooler/ remote filter. And what you will really see and appreciate (as do I) the intercooler pipes!!! Big thanks to Blair and Nate for piecing them together. Blair came out and helped me for a few days which really helped speed things along. Next is custom spark plug wires, fab up the down pipe, side exit exhaust, fuel lines, oil drain line for the turbo. Getting closer!!! Thinking about ordering all new silicone connectors, I don't really like the way the blue looks. They also have 90 degree elbows that transition from 2-2.5 so I can get rid of that 2" section across the valve cover. Pipes will be cleaned and painted when all the fab work is done. Now for your viewing pleasure!!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
- Ryan T - 03-23-2009 I don't normally like VWs, but I def have a chubby after looking at those pictures. Amazing work Paul, simply awesome! - ScottyB - 03-23-2009 looks fantastic! are you going to be adding a heat shield between the hotside and the firewall? also, what kind of EM are you planning to run (not sure if you mentioned it before). - Paul - 03-23-2009 Pretty sure I'll make a heat shield for the turbo, there is also a brake line that runs on the firewall. There is supposed to be a wire loom that runs down the firewall too, but I relocated that wiring up to the radiator support. The engine will be running off a Simple Digital System (SDS) EM-4 I think was the model I have. Has its own coil pack and MAP sensor, so non of the Audi electronics will be used except for the air and water temp sensors. This system is supposed to be really user friendly and easy to tune.....we'll see how that goes. I also have an Innovate LM-1 wideband to assist in tuning. I have a good idea of how to tune the car, but I have a feeling there will be a lot of trial and error. I'm tryin to get ahead on my school work so I can get back up there to work on it. - ScottyB - 03-23-2009 i've heard of people tuning B5's with the SDS with good look, also the 034EFI systems too. good luck! the less stock VW electronics the better
- Paul - 04-30-2009 Well, I have made some progress in the past few weeks. Finally have some time to post up the footage so I can share with everyone. I'm about finished with school so I will have more time to work on this beast. Since the last picture post, I have fabricated the downpipe and exhaust, painted the intake manifold and valve cover, made my my hybrid spark plug wires (more on that later), routed the fuel lines and installed a fuel pressure gauge, and although not pictured I wired up the VW TPS to the SDS system (finally got the wiring diagram). The last thing I did this past weekend was the fuel lines, starting from the engine and working my way back. Unfortunately, when I reached the tank I uncovered some bad news, the tank was badly rusted, and the lines in the rear of the car were really ratty looking. So I dropped out the tank and removed the section of bad fuel lines, which I would have had to do anyway. In a Rabbit the fuel filter in located under the hood, I was relocating the filter to the rear of the car where it is on later models. Have a new tank, fuel pump, and sending unit on order. Didn't get any pictures cause it got really messy back there and was working on a tight time budget. The spark plug wires were interesting, I used VR6 wires (well 4 of them anyway) because they were the right length to go through the valve cover, but the length had to be adjusted and the end that goes to the SDS coil pack is different than that of the VW coil pack. I used MSD wire connectors and holders as you can see in the pics. Making the downpipe and exhaust was simple. I really enjoy metal fabrication. I haven't welded in some time, so the first few welds didn't look that great but got better on latter welds. Downpipe and exhaust is 2.5" with a straight through Magnaflow muffler. Well enough talk, enjoy the pictures. ![]() ![]() ![]() Exhaust: ![]() Side exit exhaust: ![]() Current bay shot minus the TPS wiring and charge pipe:
