We're not talking about gear oil, folks!

I'm curious about amsoil, also. I mean, on one hand, every objective test I see has them rated very high, but everyone who sells it is like "BEST OIL EVAR! 100,000 mile change intervals! More fuel economy! More power! Makes your penis larger! Cures cancer!"

Undecided

That amway shit makes me nervous.

Motul Gear oil FTW!

Do you get a free handy from the Motul people with every plug?

Rex-Buy any oil you like, test it. It will comfort the car nerd in you Smile

this man speaks the truth....motorcraft is very good. their tranny fluid (i think some guys call it the "honey") is amazing.

All Motorcraft motor oil is a "synthetic blend"?

Honestly, this would be probably my best option, if I weren't such a homo for a full synthetic. I'd move the Focus up to 5W-30 and just buy it by the pallet.

Yes. Don't bash Synthetic Blends. Most of the 'Synthetic' oil out there is a blend.

Never used the motul but I've tried about 10 others and the only thing I found that didn't burn up after 1 weekend at the track in my rear was RedLine Heavy Shock Gear oil. Shit is thicker than mud but still looks clean and not burnt smell after a weekend.

Free happy ending!

i liked amsoil but i only used it once because it's (A) expensive and (B) going through private dealers is a pain in my ass. i probably won't go for it again based on those criteria. i guess i'd recommend royal purple but again, you can't really go wrong.

stick with your factory oil weight too.

So you get a massage, too? Hot damn. Leave it to the French to come up with some freaky sponsorship programs.

You can't go wrong with Amsoil or Royal Purple. Andrewtech swears by a new kind of Amsoil oil, I honestly can't remember what it's called. I've seen independent dyno charts (the results were duplicated on Horsepower TV) of small horsepower gains by switching from a xxx brand synthetic to Royal Purple.

Here is a pretty interesting read on oils. Note how poorly Mobile 1 does in the comparison. Royal Purple got one of the best results.

i'm with andy on changing at specific intervals. i dont track the STi so i'm not as worried about oil. the manual calls for 5W-30 (not even synthetic) but i run whatever synthetic is on sale. advance had pennzoil synthetic on sale B1G1 free a few months ago, so i stocked up. are you gonna put the MS3 on track? if so, then i would spend the big $$ on royal purple, M1, or zie german castrol. if its just strictly a daily, i wouldnt worry too much about the extra 10ppm of whatever additives that differentiate pennzoil from M1 from castrol, etc as long as you're changing your oil on a regular basis.

on a sorta related note: everytime i go in to CDOC, i'm usually buying some redline tranny fluid because its the only place around here that sells redline. so everytime i do that, they look up the stuff in their computer to put it on my invoice so i see all their redline stuff. you can buy that stuff by the 55 gallon barrel for a couple thousand. its been sooooo tempting....

A guy that races with us just bought one. Confusedhock:

I think he figured it out to like $5/quart or something.

- CaptainHenreh - 06-15-2007

Well, I can get Royal Purple at AAP...

And Chad, that was my point. I don't want a "synthetic blend," I want a true full synthetic. I know that some "synthetics" are really blends, which is what I want to avoid.

Why??!?! What technical basis do you have for wanting to avoid a blend?

white_2kgt Wrote:Why??!?! What technical basis do you have for wanting to avoid a blend?

I don't have a technical basis for avoiding a blend. If a blend offers similar flashpoints and ash%'s as a full synthetic, then this thread is over and I'm buying motocraft by the case.

The motorcraft is very good stuff. I don't use it b/c I can get mobile 1 cheaper and so far blackstone sees no reason to change.

Where do you get Mobil1 cheaper than motorcraft?

Man, Motocraft is like, 3 bucks a quart. Mobil1, the cheapest I've seen it, is 5.

Any reason not to use 5W-30 in Julie's car? (She currently uses 5W-20) It's essentially the same engine. That way I can just buy a crap ton of oil at a time.

eh? I'm paying $5/qt for Mobil1 at sams, motorcraft is $6/qt w/ my discount!

You will be fine w/ the 5w-30, they just call for 5-20 for emissions reasons.

Do you buy it at a dealership?

Also, I looked and it seems like Motorcraft has got a 5W-30 full synthetic...interesting.

- WRXtranceformed - 06-15-2007

I'm running 15w50 full synthetic in the STi =P

Maybe the $6/qt was for the full synthetic. Yes it was a dealership, when he told me the price I told him to forget it so I stuck w/ Mobile1.

Wow, thats kinda scary knowing that the mobil 1 i buy still lets that happen. I may try something different in my car now since i need to change my oil in a couple of weeks. I may fork out for the Royal purple or something else, possibly that euro spec oil you guys are talking about if it comes in the correct weight for my car.

Considering the royal purple is only gonna be like 10 more bucks, sounds like good insurance for my engine and turbo, cause i dont wanna replace those anytime soon. Anyone have opinions on oil filters???

- WRXtranceformed - 06-15-2007

I was really surprised when I saw that kind of wear also... it was one of the worst!
