Also - no one has mentioned the shittiness of the media center edition of XP. It's possibly worse than ME - but my memory is getting faded on how bad that was, so I can't say that for sure. My moms computer at home is an HP that came with XP MC on it, and it does the most random shit ever - restarts, "recovers from a serious error" about every 3 times you start it up, freezes, runs slow..etc etc etc...and i'm talking about after a fresh install

Sounds like a typical HP pc...

Yep.

I know of a few people running windows media edition without issue.

Puff, puff, give derek.

- HAULN-SS - 03-08-2007

well, that post was more of an afterthought anyway

- .RJ - 03-08-2007

When in doubt, blame MS right?

- Apoc - 03-08-2007

I run XPMC on my FrakenDell without issues.

What do you use it for? Do you have a capture card in it? Which one?

- HAULN-SS - 03-08-2007

Well, I'm pretty sure you couldnt stay in business long producing defective hardware, so yeah, blame the software. You can make a killing and be around a long time releasing defective software.

:?:

HP/Compaq have been doing it forever. Who cares if the shit doesnt work, its cheap and comes in a pretty box!

- Apoc - 03-08-2007

Ummm.... stuff? I don't remember the brand of capture card but it's probably 3 years old. I haven't had any problems capturing, rendering or watching PC & DVD videos. I don't use it to rip DVDs, if that matters.

edit: +1 (or is it -1) for HP and Compaq being crap

Part of my job function is looking at performance on different machine specs/demographics and HP and Compaq are always at the shitty end of the spectrum.

So you don't really use it as a primary TV viewer or PVR? I'm still trying to decide what I want to use in my living room. I have a copy of XPME but I'm really starting to Dig SAGETV.

Negits. I have this nifty little box that DirecTV gave me to do that. I've never really been one for a true medic center PC. I have no doubt the technology will become more mainstream but I don't think it's there quite yet. Besides, if my wife's shows are recorded on my PC, how am I going to watch pr0n? Wink

she'll learn to love it.

Well, I have a comcast box, but it's a Piece of shit and only holds 10hrs of HDTV. If I record 1 Race on FOX and a few hrs of speed channel it's almost full. I have a dual tuner SD capture card in my HTPC that I record all non HD TV, I think it says I can record 140 some days worth of TV, lol. Best part of it is I can watch those shows from any PC in the house over the network Smile I have my own Mythbuster/American Chopper/American Hotrod/PowerBlock marathon's once a month or so, and w/ Sage it automatically does commerical skipping.

Network/server TV is something I wouldn't mind but my current set up works pretty well and change is stressful.

What I'd really like is to be able to get broadcast television on a TV that doesn't have a wall outlet anywhere near it. I know they had wireless TV senders but they're usually crap if you have a wireless network. I suppose slingbox and a PC is an option but that idea seems overkill.

SageTV + SageTV Media Extender.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.sagetv.com/extender.html">http://www.sagetv.com/extender.html</a><!-- m -->

You run SageTV on your PC w/ the capture card and use the wireless version of SageTV media Extender hooked up to a regular TV. I've been using the SageTV Client on my Laptop (802.11b) and there's no problem with bandwidth. Now, if you have digital cable/satellite you won't be able to get the 'Premium" channels unless you pump the output of a Digital Box/Sat Receiver to the MediaPC and use some plugins so Sage knows to change the channel on the box either though IR blasters or serial connection (some sat receivers), but it will give you all the Unencrypted channels + an on screen guide on the 'remote' tv.
