I dont see how you can be entirely self-sufficient going through remote areas for 3-6 months on the bike. Maybe I just dont know any better... but from reading the book and watching the movie, its no simple task and they did spend large portions (several weeks at a time) of the trip away from the support vehicles - and you still have to ride the bikes through some pretty nasty conditions.

Just because it's not how you would do it doesn't mean it's not interesting and/or entertaining. Choosing not to watch it because they have the means or lack of balls to do it with a support truck seems a bit dismissive to me. It's about the bikes and the experience, not who was following them. Personally, I don't think you can consider yourself a bike enthusiast if you do but I've never been mistaken for one so what do I know.

I think a large part of the experience is determined by what's following you. Things certainly are different if there's no support crew.
Go drive your car home. RJ can go think more about whatever sportbike is cool this week. And I'll go ride home and not watch it.

As Chris said, I found it incredibly entertaining - I dont have the means (re: $$, balls, skill, etc) to do the trip they did, so I'll watch and enjoy it.

How's the view from that pedestal? Can you see your house from there?
A good portion of the trip, they were alone. Most of the time they only saw the truck at border crossings and that was because of visa issues and whatnot. If you gave it a chance, you might.... gasp.... actually like it!

Why the fuck is everybody jumping on my ass over a dissenting comment? I didn't jump on the "I like it" bandwagon. So fucking what? One guy says "oh, whatever, you can't do it without them" and I say "well, yeah, you can, so this so I'm not really interested in this" and a bunch of folks go off about it.
Last time I checked none of your were even remotely interested in this kind of riding except for... the movie. Nor the bikes they ride, or even really riding in less than idea conditions or at the track. While you were watching this movie last weekend, I was out test riding a bike to use specifically for that type of riding. I don't have the disposable income or time to go do what they did, but you can bet your ass that I'm planning on doing similar, shorter term riding.
Next time I'm plan on redefining my motorcycling persona I'll make sure to watch whatever shit you guys come up with.

Seriously, a show with a long-distance riding n00b and a survival expert riding from, say, Alaska to Argentina would be the baddest ass thing on TV.
Does anyone know how you draw up a proposal for a reality show? I bet there's some TV execs that might go for that.

My bad. Given that most folks I know that ride motorbikes know that I've been looking at an R1150GS and this is the first time I've even heard you mention being interested in adventure riding, I got mixed up.
