I dont buy it. If the thrust bearing clearances are out of whack, its not going to last 70,000 miles.

agreed. i've seen video of the crank moving like a full inch when disengaging the clutch. if that were the case while the engine was spinning at 5krpms, it would not last that long. most people on the miata boards that have dealt with this say its been an issue for like the first 10-20k miles if even that.

My nuts it moves an inch. A thrust bearing isn't even that thick.

- Evan - 11-02-2006

ive seen the video he is referring to, and its about 1/4"
but i think the point is that its very obvious to see when you push in the clutch (in that one extreme case)

well, not an inch, but very noticeable to the naked eye which was my point

So wait...99 Miatas crankwalk?

That looks almost as much as my DSM had.

- REED - 11-02-2006

Evan - do you know dave shechter? he does or used to race spec miatas

Many of the 99s and 2000s had improperly sized bearings. Production mistake, not inherent design weakness Wink
Almost all had failed before they hit 10k miles, although there have been a very few anomolies to reach 70k

I know a few daves but shechter doesnt ring a bell.

- REED - 11-03-2006

from an email:he check engine
light is on. The diagnostic computer at the dealer revealed that the fuel
cap code P0442 is tripping the CEL. Changed the fuel cap but the light is
still on. I don't have time to track down the small leak in the evap
system which isn't affecting performance and reliability.

I've heard of this in lots of cars (the fuel cap tripping the CEL), but if replacing the cap doesn't help, how big of a deal is finding/repairing or not repairing a leak in the evap system?

- .RJ - 11-03-2006

The emissions controls on those cars are pretty prone to failure - did the dealership recommend a fix? You will need to get it through emissions at some point, which on the OBD-2 cars is just plugging in a scanner and checking for codes - no sniffer.

- Feersty - 11-06-2006

How bout this one fellas?

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/car/230911265.html">http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ ... 11265.html</a><!-- m -->

- REED - 11-07-2006

So - results are in - everything is a.o.k. except the CEL is still on. Finding the leak can be a PITA so if the seller will get it fixed I'll go ahead and pull the trigger

- Feersty - 11-07-2006

Awesome, yeah the one I posted I may take a look at. Convertible are sure on the cheap during the winter/cold months.
