another great thing about the prius (and probably the civic too) is that they're virtually emission free (unlike a late model civic). Yea i watched a whole show on TLC or discovery on the Prius and it seemed like a very nice economy car. The continuously variable transmission is a work of art too, just imagine a CV tranny on a car with some high power, always in the peak of the powerband. Yea the show said the prius originally was supposed to cost 30,000 but they got a hefty government grant that knocked the price down to around 20,000 and then you get the income tax credit of i think 2000, so essentially 18,000 for a earth friendly, good gas mileage piece of machinery. However, like most new things i'd definitely wait on buying one, just incase theres issues with the design that dont hold up (like most new models). Definitely a step in the right direction. Oh yea, has anyone seen that eclipse prototype thats crazy lookin and orange???? It's a hybrid and makes something like 600whp and crazy amounts of torque. So just like regular cars, the hybrids will have economy versions, and more performance oriented versions, just gotta give it some time to progress. I dunno about you guys, but i can't wait to see what the high performance hybrids can do.

Already being done with Audi. Their CVT is very cool, they have a conventional two-pulley system to vary the drive speed of the wheels however to keep from shredding belts/chains (3.0L motor = torque) their chains are a new design and loaded in compression instead of tension - this design solves alot of problems.

I don't pretend to understand CVT's, in fact, I barely understand a regular transmission. But I REALLY don't understand how a chain could be loaded in compression. I'll just assume alien technology. :bow:

Nissan has also been doing the CVT for a while. Pretty cool shit. Regular transmissions scare me, so you can imagine my thoughts on working on a CVT.

There are 2 master links that expand and put the whole chain in compression when they are loaded in tension (i.e. going around the pulleys).
Simple, effecive. Putting the chain in compression increases the torque capacity of the gearbox, you dont have the tendency to shear the chain/belt when the torque loads increase.

225 ft-lbs is alot. Probably more than most street driven cars need, and i'm guessing that in the general trend of german over-engineering that the setup is severely overbuilt and could be modified to handled double those loads.
