same here....it would help to know what the injuries are (ie, if its a cast that prevents him from moving much, magazines prob. wouldn't work / can't turn pages...) do patients get tv's in their rooms? maybe some dvd's, or we could send him a little cd player with some good standup comedy in it for him to listen to....like Dane Cook and Lewis Black

they get tvs, but dunno bout dvd players...

I'm glad he's ok - guys, can we set up a donation for care package and paypal it to John? Maybe a hot nurse strip-o-gram Tongue

Mental note: Do not go through yellow lights.

Thats fine. So, what are we getting? I'd say maybe a card, DVD(s) (Faster?), Magazines (whatever motorsport stuff I can find in the rack at the store), and if theres any $$$ left, a gift cert towards new gear (maybe newenough.com or something similar).

- G.Irish - 01-11-2006

Yeah look for Performance Bike or just Bike (both UK magazines) and maybe Road Racer X. Then a card and maybe gift cert to newenough or chapparal motorsports, parts unlimited or whatever. Maybe bring him some baked goods of some sort too?

- HAULN-SS - 01-11-2006

sounds like they were both doing the same thing, beating a yellow light....I dont see how they could pin it on anyone

- G.Irish - 01-11-2006

Except:
(1) Someone turning left is not supposed to turn on yellow
(2) Someone turning left on green without the arrow is supposed to yield anyway

- Feersty - 01-11-2006

I betcha he was pulled out into the intersection.

Thanks for the insight.

Doesnt make the driver any less at fault.

- HAULN-SS - 01-11-2006

You're also not supposed to be going through a light on yellow either...unless he was nearly at the stop bar, the SL is 35 i believe on that section of road, he would've had time to stop, and there must not have been anythign behind him, or it seems like they would've ended up in the mess too.

- G.Irish - 01-11-2006

That would still make it mostly the truck driver's fault for failing to yield, even if he was trying to beat a yellow.

- Ross.Church - 01-11-2006

The lights are synchronous, so both the truck driver and cyclist went through at the same phase of the light. However, the truck driver also had to yield to oncoming traffic, so it was his fault. I dont see how this could be blamed on the cyclist unless he was riding at some unreasonable speed.

- Mike - 01-11-2006

does anyone actually know what happened or how everything was situated? i don't see the point at even guessing or trying to place blame if you don't.

- JohnC - 01-12-2006

Well, I'm currently trying to get in touch with him to see when I can drop by this afternoon. I have a phone number for his room (434-982-1328) but haven't gotten to him yet. I'll keep trying in between meetings.

- Feersty - 01-12-2006

Thanks John for taking the lead, update as soon as you know...

- junooni - 01-12-2006

i have a huge favor to ask...did anymone of you guys actually see the accident...coz derek wanna talk to someone who saw it.....so he can tell his lawyer whats goin on...the trcuk that he was hit by is owned by a harrisonburg local company..and obviosuly they are gonna have connection to turn this in their favor....so lemme know man...Thanx

- JohnC - 01-12-2006

Alright, I'm headed over to the bookstore and the hospital now. Myself, Gerald, Mike, and RJ have put in some money towards the care package. If anyone else wants to throw some paypal to "john@jtan.com", feel free. Whatever is left over after the bookstore will get put into a newenough.com gift cert tonight.

- JohnC - 01-12-2006

So I dropped by the hospital. Unfortunately, Derek was still in surgery, so I didn't get a chance to see him in person. I did talk to his mom (!) however, and she said that he is doing well and expects to make a full recovery. He's got quite a nice stash of presents and balloons going, and to that, I added a bunch of magazines (including those ones Gerald mentioned) plus a copy of Peter Egan's "Leanings", which also looked like a cool read. His mom said that he likes to read, so hopefully that stuff will go over well. I signed the book "from Madison Motorsports" 8)

btw - Any further donations will go towards a gift cert. What I mentioned above took care of what was already donated (thanks again RJ, Mike, Gerald, and Pete!)
