Says who? A good part of the HPDE crowd does this, and every instructor i've spoken with doesnt have a problem with it. I've instructed that way, and as long as the harness is properly mounted, with a rollbar - its fine. A seat is more better, of course but it wont stop anyone from getting in the car.

actually my last instructor (the same one Chris had) also said that he wouldn't step into a car for instruction if the driver was heavily secure and the passenger side had a seat-belt and 3-point. I think if you're going to place safety enhancements that the passenger should have additional protection (maybe not as nice, but equally or near equally as protective as the driver).
he would be "very hesitant" were his exact words. And depending on his driving he would or would not remain as the instructor.

seems to have gotten sidetracked onto the topic of a stock seat and stock belt for the passenger, which I agree is at least a faux pas. But what you're mentioning seems more than reasonable. Generally a cheaper seat is just less comfortable, but hey, a cheap seat and harness is WAAAY better than a stock seat, so they should be happy to ride along.
Chris, I've got a real nice passenger sport (stock) seat, those with harnesses actually are a decent setup. Rode in one at Little Talladega the other weekend matter of fact.

I said harness, not stock seat belt, on the passenger side. I've got 30 or so weekends instructing, so.... take it FWIW.

to add my 2c, a stock seat with bar and harnesses is not as safe as a real seat, since the hinges on the stock seat can shear or break, and can force the seat under the bar.
The instructor has every right to refuse getting in the car if the saftey equipment is not equivalent. And a new nasa rule this year says that any rollbarred car must have a seat back brace with a non-fia seat. (although there are situations where this would be counter productive)
personally, I havent really had a problem with stock seat, harnesses, and rollbar. I would prefer a real seat, and it says something to me about the student if they are not willing to spend a couple hundred on a seat for me.
But ive never refused to get in a car because of it, although that may change in the future as I have become much more saftey conscious with all the wrecks and instructor injuries this year.
the worst for me was when i had a guy in a race prepped (shitty bolt in cage) integra, but on my side was the stock seat, stock seatbelt, and no rollbar padding. I got in the car for a session (which i wont do again), and didnt get back in.

my point is that i would have harnesses for both sides, but necessarily a non-stock seat. i understand that a seat with proper support and holes for the harnesses to pass through is prefered for the passenger, but i aint made of money
