Last weekend we saw very few once we were off the highway, thats quite a bit different than riding in a pack of cars for the entire stretch.
I'm just not sure I'm comfortable doing a long/scenic ride around a pack of cars, thats all. If we were to do this, we would absolutely have to separate the cars and bikes and keep a significant distance between the two.

if you want a bike only circle jerk, then thats fine, but there isnt really any reason for it. i figured it would be a nice chance to put the top down on one of the last warmish days and drive with some friends, but ill just keep it at home and wrench on the racecar i guess.

Seriously, if you're not planning on bike jackassery there's no reason that cars are gonna make anything more dangerous. Just follow at safe distances, no ricer flybys or stoppies, and everyone will have a good time.

Having cars in the ride can do the riders a big favor as long as it's done right.
The car(s) sits a safe distance back from the pack of riders, protecting them from otherwise obnoxiously close or unprepared road goers. Each time a major change is supposed to a occur - a turn, lane change, etc. the car(s) is the first to do so securing the area for the entire group.
Outlaw clubs, the 1%'ers who have semis following with *ahem* "goods" in them, practice this all the time. They tend to ride in large groups... helping them stay together.
It's all about comfort, though, really. If somebody doesn't feel safe then they're going to more skiddish than not.
As for me, cars or no cars, I'm fine.

My thoughts are that I'm not completely comfortable on the bike at this point - having cars and bikes on the same route together unless they're separated just isnt the best idea, IMO. If they're separated, I think that its fine, but to be honest I dont want a 3000 lb car on my bumper (er, rear tire) on a spirited ride/drive.

About 75% of the ride on sunday was spent by ourselves.
The point of it wasnt to try to exclude anyone - I dont feel comfortable on a scenic drive on twisty roads mixed up with a bunch of cars for the whole trip - I've barely put 500 miles on this bike - thats why I said just separate the two and I think we'd have a good time.

There will be other cars on that road on a nice day. I would rather be surrounded by cars I know rather than some idiot that is not paying attention. Just my vote.

While it's clear that there will be other cars on the road at the time, RJ's concerns are not unfounded. There's enough of a sensory overload for a new rider that any additional stimuli can be overwhelming.
A successful combined ride can be had, provided those who are driving decide to be mature about their conduct and understand the rules riders follow to keep us safe®.
-All bikes should be together to help increase visibility. A lot of accidents occur because other drivers don't see bikes behind/around other cars.
-An experienced rider takes point and sweep, that way n00bs only have to worry about the rider in front and behind them, not the friend following them and making faces in the car.
-Speeds are usually at speed limit (+5), even those yellow suggested speed signs. Don't get pissed if the riders are holding you up or taking too long to catch up.
-A car should be behind sweep rider to control tailgating, but obviously not tailgating themself. Note that what people in cars and riders consider tailgating is vastly different.
-Leapfrog without a singal from the person in front of you isn't nice.
Bottom line is everyone here is likely mature enough not to act like a jackass and those of us who don't have a cage appreciate you do so.
