My car never burned oil on the street, and about 1/2qt per weekend on track. - Kaan - 03-15-2005 and how often was it on the street? how often were you in Vtak? - .RJ - 03-15-2005 Street - 9k miles? v-attack = as often as possible
- Andy - 03-15-2005 Jay, I have a compression tester you can use. I'll stop by the wrench day thing around 4. If you want it sooner, let me know. - .RJ - 03-15-2005 Compression wont show what you are looking for... get a leakdown test done. Pull the head and re-ring it with the block in the car

Pull the head and re-ring it with the block in the carWhy would he want to get a leakdown test done (unless it is white smoke)? A compression test will definately show if the rings are bad or not, which would be the cause of the oil consumption, not the headgasket. - .RJ - 03-15-2005 The leakdown test will show if the valves or rings are seating properly - Andy - 03-15-2005 .RJ Wrote:The leakdown test will show if the valves or rings are seating properly the engine has 130k on it. Either the rings are worn or not. Compression will show that. If his numbers are bad, then a leakdown will good to figure what is the culprit of poor comp. numbers. There's a really cool tool you can buy for like 10 bucks. It's essentially a hose with a threaded end that you thread down in the spark plug hole, you then shoot compressed air into. If you hear whistling on the intake side, then you've got intake valves that aren't seated or bent. Same for the exhaust side. You can even attach a whistle to the hose, and use it to determine TDC. - .RJ - 03-15-2005 jackstands Wrote:the engine has 130k on it. Either the rings are worn or not. Compression will show that. Or the valve seals/seats are shot and the head needs to be pulled and refreshed - much easier than pulling the motor and tearing it down for rings which lends itself to too many "while you're in there" $$ adders. - mpg9999 - 03-21-2005 Yet another person here with a compression tester. I'll be at vmp as well. Let me know if I can help you with anything. - JohnC - 03-21-2005 mpg9999 Wrote:Yet another person here with a compression tester. I'll be at vmp as well. Let me know if I can help you with anything. Bring yours. I'm probably not going to be bringing the Z, and won't have any of my tools either. - Sijray21 - 03-25-2005 ok, a recent update: i've been checking my oil periodically every few days and after 10 days i have not lost any more oil...? WTF is going on here? I've checked for smoke while in vtec and that is no more...or atleast it has dissipated enough to where i cannot see it from my rear view anymore. i will still check it often I also still plan on running a compression test to verify their numbers. Any ideas as to this weirdness? I haven't touched the car otherwise. - Chris - 03-25-2005 it happens with hondas all the time- they fix themselves. Its happened to me 8) - Rex4life - 03-28-2005 jackstands Wrote:Jay, I have a compression tester you can use. I'll stop by the wrench day thing around 4. If you want it sooner, let me know. will that work on my car? i have always wanted to check my compression and see how beat up my engine actually is. if it will work on my car could i borrow it some time? - Andy - 03-28-2005 I believe rotaries can use regular compression testers but I don't know about the thread pitch of your spark plugs. If it's the same as some adapters that I have, sure you can use it, - Mike - 03-28-2005 hehe i always get a kick out of the title of this thread... smoke w/ the vtec... sounds.... hardcore. - Rex4life - 03-28-2005 jackstands Wrote:I believe rotaries can use regular compression testers but I don't know about the thread pitch of your spark plugs. If it's the same as some adapters that I have, sure you can use it, You can't use a regular compression tester on a rotary to determine anything but the worst of news. You have to hold the valve open, and the needle will "jump" up and down. But for any kind of accuracy, a regular compression tester is pretty much useless for a rotary. - JackoliciousLegs - 03-29-2005 CaptainHenreh Wrote:You can't use a regular compression tester on a rotaryWell rex, I've been reading up on this more since our last test... and we can definitely do a compression test on a rotary. It won't be super accurate, but I know how to do it... unlike last time when we just guessed  ... I can help you with it if you want to do it... hell, I'll even do mine again.. the right way. - Rex4life - 03-29-2005 i made a post on rx7club.com asking if you could and it is possible. although numbers will span around 20psi from the actual, it will give you a good idea about the health of your engine. jack, that would be awesome if you know how to do it correctly and want to give a hand |
