Compression wont show what you are looking for... get a leakdown test done. Pull the head and re-ring it with the block in the car

A compression test will definately show if the rings are bad or not, which would be the cause of the oil consumption, not the headgasket.

the engine has 130k on it. Either the rings are worn or not. Compression will show that. If his numbers are bad, then a leakdown will good to figure what is the culprit of poor comp. numbers. There's a really cool tool you can buy for like 10 bucks. It's essentially a hose with a threaded end that you thread down in the spark plug hole, you then shoot compressed air into. If you hear whistling on the intake side, then you've got intake valves that aren't seated or bent. Same for the exhaust side. You can even attach a whistle to the hose, and use it to determine TDC.

Or the valve seals/seats are shot and the head needs to be pulled and refreshed - much easier than pulling the motor and tearing it down for rings which lends itself to too many "while you're in there" $$ adders.

ok, a recent update:
i've been checking my oil periodically every few days and after 10 days i have not lost any more oil...? WTF is going on here? I've checked for smoke while in vtec and that is no more...or atleast it has dissipated enough to where i cannot see it from my rear view anymore.
i will still check it often
I also still plan on running a compression test to verify their numbers.
Any ideas as to this weirdness? I haven't touched the car otherwise.

will that work on my car? i have always wanted to check my compression and see how beat up my engine actually is. if it will work on my car could i borrow it some time?

I believe rotaries can use regular compression testers but I don't know about the thread pitch of your spark plugs. If it's the same as some adapters that I have, sure you can use it,

You can't use a regular compression tester on a rotary to determine anything but the worst of news. You have to hold the valve open, and the needle will "jump" up and down. But for any kind of accuracy, a regular compression tester is pretty much useless for a rotary.

i made a post on rx7club.com asking if you could and it is possible. although numbers will span around 20psi from the actual, it will give you a good idea about the health of your engine. jack, that would be awesome if you know how to do it correctly and want to give a hand
