Ed's replica headlights with the Hylux 5500k HID kit ordered. They're GTI style with the red lighting package stripe, but with the dual LED running lights like the Golf R.

I was going to wait until the subaru sold, but whatever. It will probably sell quick and I was going to order them anyway.

RE: 2dr Mk7 GTI - RawrImAMonster - 04-18-2018

Since my last post got lost with the forum's DB issues we were having last week I'll repost a few.

The dealership must have missed cleaning the front drivers seat because it was in pretty rough shape when I got it. I hit it with a carpet shampooer then a couple rounds of Blue Corral upholstery cleaner. It seems to have came out pretty nicely:

I also received my Ed's replica headlights and installed those into the car over the weekend. It was a surprisingly easy install, I didn't have to remove the bumper at all and it took maybe 2 hours being fairly hungover/groggy. Perfect weather for the install other than a little wind.

Once it warms up again and I have a little more time I'm going to mess with the bulbs a little. I think the beam pattern could be a little more smooth and from what I've been reading that can mean the bulb isn't seated properly. Either way, they're already better than my M3's HID's and it came with those from the factory.

The LED's look really nice and are really bright so I'm definitely very happy with those. You can see them in the reflections off other cars even during the day.

Damn... I really like those lights. Any plans to replace the grill so the red stripe lines up or you gonna rock it how it is?

RE: 2dr Mk7 GTI - RawrImAMonster - 04-18-2018

Honestly I really don't care or notice that at all. If it wasn't 200 bucks for a grill to move the stripe a few mm higher I would consider it.

Next up for this thing will be the Unitronic stage 1+ ECU tune and Stage 1 TCU tune. As soon as the Subaru sells I'll buy those. I'm in the process of replacing an axle boot (got sent the wrong part, again) on it and then I'll list it for sale. I expect it to sell pretty quickly.

Where did you place the ballasts? Or were those pre-installed?

There's a spot on the side that you can stick them on or if you want to make it a little cleaner you can get everything set up so its stuck to the bottom.  For now I'm just using double sided 3m molding tape to hold them.  Seems to be working so far.

2dr Mk7 GTI - Sijray21 - 04-18-2018

Inside the housing? It seems there's enough room, but I need to dive into the wife's car again tonight to install the hids.

RE: 2dr Mk7 GTI - RawrImAMonster - 04-18-2018

No on the outside of the housing.

The kit I have was literally just plug and play. No wires needed to be ran anywhere or grounded, you just plugged up everything and they worked.

Yeah, I get that.... just curious if was actually noticeable when you aren't looking for it.

FWIW, they're <$100 here: http://opdparts.com/index.php/volkswagen/golf/golf-mk7/vw-mk7-golf-gti-lighting-package-high-bar-grille-black-w-red-trim.html

I just installed the HID kit in my wife's GSW. I don't know what I was thinking with the halogen bulbs. So nice to have visibility in that damn thing at night now... The kit I got was plug and play, too. I put the ballast on the top of the washer fluid reservoir on the driver's side and on the sheet metal under the passenger headlight.

HID/LEDs have become a requirement for all our cars. When you are driving back from bum fuck nowhere after visiting our parents, you take all the light you can get to lookout for asshole animals that wanna ruin your night.

Driving my parents car, that has projectors with halogens, I'd be better off holding a flash light out the window.

How do they still produce new cars without HIDs at a minimum blows my mind.

I could not agree more.

That perfectly describes my entire experience with the Canyon headlights.  I'm glad I finally found a solution because it was a big reason why I was thinking about selling the truck

Driving the Ranger over the Continental Divide as the sky was turning from blue to black was pretty sketchy. It doesn't even have projectors. The lights worked "fine" but it's wild what was considered normal automotive lighting not all that long ago.

That's not the city. I avoid anything in the beltway when I can.

It's still an urban hell hole. Sterling is certainly not away from the "riff Raff".
