Did you pull the wiring harness? That photo of everything stripped with just the battery cable and steering wheel remaining is lovely.

Puts car nudes on a public forum but doesn't mark it NSFW... C'mon man.

Yup, no wiring harness. I run a stand-alone so I will be running all new wiring. 2 wires to the back for brake lights and then the 2 abs sensor harnesses. Planning on mounting the ECU in the Engine bay to only have about 10-12 wires running through the firewall and doing it through a DTM bulkhead.

There is a spot welded plate wheee the shifter goes through on a manual. Just gotta drill them out and drop the plate.

Seriously, that's hardcore. I don't even care and I'm excited at the possibilities of such a clean build.

The past couple weeks have been fairly quiet on this car. Between the holidays with my family in town every 2 weeks and my cage builder being pretty busy, not much progress has been made.

Instead I took on a bit of work with the motor. I wanted to take off the valve cover to inspect for any damage. There was none under visual inspection and the motor looks to be in absolutely fantastic shape. Quick valve adjustment and onto the VANOS.

Slowly (and I mean slowly like 15 minutes at a time over the past 2 weeks) I have been rebuilding the VANOS. This just includes taking it apart and putting in new seals and carefully seating everything. I also added a Besian Tools drilled oil pump disc to hopefully improve reliability. I then went through and replaced all the cam bolts, and reassembled the top of the motor. Next step is to pull the oil pan, another visual inspection, and install rod bearings and crankscraper.

Wooo! A small bit of cage progress!

I don’t think this subframe is going anywhere...

Holy cow. Nice.

RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - D_Eclipse9916 - 02-09-2018

Not much to update, progress has been slow with prepping the house for sale.

Knocked out the rod bearings. They weren't in too bad of shape, but worth it for the piece of mind. Adding a crankscraper and then I can button up the motor.

One of my favorite toys, Digital Angle Torque Wrench. Picked this up a couple years ago when I was doing a lot of rod bearing jobs for people. Hated using the analog adpater.

Meanwhile this week Deren is finishing up the last parts on the cage. He added a couple cool features such as the M logos built into the gussets on the A-pillars. Going to look awesome all painted in white, and then using a piece of Carbon to provide contrast (and covering up the potential for grabbing sharp edges with fingers).

That's pretty rad, now you have to show up to meets in this thing and hard park next to a fake M-badged car and be like "oh yeah I got one of those, in the gusset of my roll cage"

^^ I do think ill do a LULZ and bring it by Katie's Cars and Coffee when it is done.

Cage and Air Jacks are done. I requested Deren to make the rear removable so I could easily get out/service the differential without a huge pain. He came up with a good solid solution without having to buy an extra Air Jack. Extra brace is below to subframe.

Dropped it off yesterday morning for paint. Their original quote was 2-3 weeks, which started making me wonder if I would make March VIR. Now they are saying a week, which makes it certainly "possible" but still a tight deadline considering I am also moving during this time. If it wasn't a last minute thrash it wouldnt be fun right?

It certainly fits the mold of your past racecars  Big Grin I still remember doing a full brake job and head gasket on the E36 with you and D'Amico and maybe someone else, maybe two nights before leaving for VIR. Amazing what can be done quickly if everyone is motivated!

Air jacks!!!!!

RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - rherold9 - 02-13-2018

Hope to see you out at March Madness driving!

As Jake mentioned, I bet you'll make it but it being last minute. It's the DJ way

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if DJ showed up with the Sierra/gooseneck/new racecar and Jess was right behind in a 26' UHaul with a baby seat strapped in the passenger side. "Well we were moving to NC and the race was on the way so it just made sense to stop on our way down."

I 100% can see this image in my head perfectly hahaha.

Am I the only one who wishes they had air Jacks on all their street cars. Tire rotation and brakes would be so easy. Of course, I guess if you have a lift, it's about the same. But air Jacks are cooler.

You know me too well.  Plan is to take some stuff down to Charlotte and hit VIR on the way back.... Tongue

RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - Beej - 02-13-2018

Looks awesome as usual.  ///M all the things.  You gonna paint the whole car white or just the cage?

Must be nice to have personal knowledge of the history of the car after your last debacle, too.

Also that's a clean fookin' engine.

RE: Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - GTBrandon - 02-13-2018

This was so cool as a current student to read through all your progress throughout the years. I've heard snippets here and there but never all of it at once chronologically, shows the sheer determination and all those damn track records like wut, that's crazy. I'm not gonna lie all this has made me want to do besides see you out at VIR in March, is to well..do it all myself in some manner.

Side note: I'm posting this in the student chat and if this thread doesn't get them hooked on the forums, I don't anything will next to a "MUST BE 18 TO ENTER WEBSITE" button  Big Grin
