Have we reached a stabilization yet? Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk RE: So the forum killed itself - Jake - 04-18-2018 I'm home now and will try to figure it out with the host. The host we/I use got acquired and I suspect there is an issue with server names or IPs or some bullshit. Evan, we migrated from phpBB to myBB a few months ago and things seem far more modern to me. phpBB suuuuucked. But, if you're still not happy, feel free to pay for the domain name, hosting and run this entire thing yourself
RE: So the forum killed itself - Apoc - 04-18-2018 No way man. It's much more fun to disappear for years and show back up bitching about the software. Wow, why does my half-serious opinion rustle your jimmies, Jake? myBB was built in 2002 and functionally is similar/identical to the other popular forum software dating back to the 90s. It...works... but it doesnt make much sense to me why a joke about it would get you so defensive over it. And given the recent data loss, you're not exactly standing on firm ground there. Id be happy to set up a Discourse instance if the club would like to see what a modern rethinking of forums is like. (But Im pretty sure you were just trying to be snarky.) The host we/I use got acquired and I suspect there is an issue with server names or IPs or some bullshit. I'm not super rustled, man. But, this forum is something that I personally have kept alive for quite some time now, with help from Adam and Joey, in my spare time. There has been zero interest from students in taking things over, zero interest from other alumni in helping out, etc. It worked fine enough on phpBB but the UX sucked, myBB was an easy, free upgrade to something "better than suck" and that's what I have time and energy for. The data loss appears to have been part of the hosting migration, which I had zero control over as pertains to date, time, side effects or whatever else. The new host/overlords assured there would be zero loss or problems and obviously that was not the case. The migration happened to take place on the day where I was on a series of three planes to fly to an island and help my parents deal with the loss of my mom's brother, who I never met in 28 years and she hadn't spoken to in 8. And then I was slightly occupied driving that Ranger home. So yeah, given where my priorities have had to be, I think the ground I stand on is pretty solid. I'm not trying to be snarky, but when someone who hasn't been very active with MM or its web presence in years drops by this thread solely to tell the forum owner/admin that it sucks, I have no real qualms about sharing my thoughts. If you would like to set up Discourse, migrate all of our users/data to it, and take over hosting duties, feel free. Seriously. I've been doing this for years because nobody else will. So the forum killed itself - Senor_Taylor - 04-19-2018 I do think documentation should be made so that people can understand how all of this is ran, and how to address issues if you're unavailable. Also, you haven't really asked anyone for help. You need to read my post again, in no way did I say HEY JAKE YOUR FORUM SUCKS. I made a joke about its usabilty, not about your effort. Sorry if that hurts your feelings. The time you and Adam spend keeping the forum up is much appreciated, even by us jerks who leave for years and come back. As for paying for things, there is no reason the club can't pay its own hosting fees. Even if they dont want to, an annual alumni funds drive could easily pay for all of our IT expenses. And if you need help, ask for it. It always seemed like you enjoyed being the super-moderator. You've put time into the forums and it seems to be your baby, just try to take it less personally. RE: So the forum killed itself - rherold9 - 04-19-2018 I wouldn't say there has been zero interest from alumni for help, I've offered to help several times? :dunno: RE: So the forum killed itself - Jake - 04-19-2018 In years past, we've had officers who were technically inclined and took an active interest in running the forums, social media, website, and so on. I would really like for this to all be handed off to current students, but every time it gets brought up, there's nobody with any skills or interest who speaks up. Hence why I've kept doing it. Documentation can and should be created, but we need a small team or roster of students and alums who can be general web admins. I'll try to get one of the upcoming officers to join the discussion and make a separate thread about the topic. FWIW my feelings aren't hurt, it takes a lot more to do that. RE: So the forum killed itself - Apoc - 04-19-2018 "Hey, I know you've dedicated your own personal time and money to keep this thing alive when no one else gave a damn... but don't take me calling your software choice 'shit' personally." Pretty sure that's what I just read. RE: So the forum killed itself - HAULN-SS - 04-23-2018 Seems like mmsports.org/forum doesnt work anymore. I get a blank page when I try to load from there RE: So the forum killed itself - JPolen01 - 04-23-2018 It redirects to http://forum.mmsports.org/ for me RE: So the forum killed itself - Jake - 04-23-2018 It's borked for me, lemme check the redirect. Update your bookmarks, heathens. RE: So the forum killed itself - Sully - 11-18-2018 Is there a way to enable night or dark mode on the computer version of the forum? I can look into a second theme, but the colors are this way because "dark mode" gives me an instant headache. I don't understand all the fanboyism around black errything with white text, it's insanely hard to read. So the forum killed itself - Sully - 11-20-2018 Yeah I was wondering if there was little a personal option in the settings I was missing. Not a mandatory for everyone thing. I don't use the computer that much but went on the wife's Mac the other day and it's kind of a big screen pretty close to your face and it's very white and I'm your face. Plus I've just gotten use to dark mode on the phone I guess. Don't fuck with our settings Sullivan!!! Many people use dark mode, especially at night, because blue light disrupts sleep patterns. I wouldn't mind a user selectable option for this reason. |
