I bought a moped - EclipseTurbno93 - 11-04-2016

I just gotta say that this is the best side project I've ever had. I was able to tear this thing apart, pull the engine from the frame, disassemble and clean the carburetor, reassemble everything, and successfully take it for a test ride in under 4 hours. You can't beat that.

So yeah, it looks like the carb was the issue. It didn't look terribly dirty, but after the cleaning it was running much, much better. I did replace the fuel filter, so hopefully that prevents gunk getting in that way. I went ahead and ordered a new air filter as well since the old one I found was nonexistent, so that should protect the other opening so this doesn't just happen again soon. I'm a sucker for words like "high flow" and "performance" so I went ahead and got the fancy one. Next thing I need to get is an exhaust, have to decide between a used stock one for $35 or a fancy, new, aftermarket one for $85. Choices choices....

If Taylor decides to bring his truck to the Summit fall finale I've asked him to bring the Red Streak with him, so maybe some of y'all will get to see it there! I'll probably be there Saturday night or Sunday morning.

Thanks for all the advice guys, keep it coming. I'm sure more stuff is bound to break soon!

Don't be an idiot. Buy the $85 aftermarket one. Shit, I'll give you $20 to help you make bad decisions on this one.

Re: I bought a moped - ScottyB - 11-04-2016

a new, full exhaust for $85? i trust you'll make the right choice

I'm glad I know alumni who can help me to make fiscally responsible decisions. Needless to say I'm ordering it today lol.

these are not the droids you're looking for

By the way, I'll definitely take the truck (and the red rocket) to Summit.

So quick update of some developments:

Exhaust is on! Its much quieter now (thankfully) but still makes a little bit of racket. I don't feel so bad when I turn it on anymore. Installation was a little annoying and took some careful bending. It also looks great, although the clear coat they put on it is starting to peel from the heat. It's super easy to take on and off now, sorta like everything on this bike, so I'll probably hit it with some exhaust paint at some point. It didn't make a whole lot of difference in power though. I rode it to school for the first time yesterday and had to walk it up some hills, but overall it ran well. I had replaced the headlight, but during this trip, when going down a hill, the bulb blew out. I'm thinking maybe the voltage regulator isn't doing its job.

Luckily I got in the mail an assortment of carburetor jets I had ordered. The one in the bike as stock was a 45, with the air filter and exhaust I knew it had to be bumped up a bit so after a good bit of google searching, I settled with a 56 to try first.

Holy. Wow. That made a huge difference. I actually have to modulate the throttle rather than just pegging it at WOT all the time. The thing can go up hills. I don't know its top speed because the speedo broke (I broke it.. :dunno: woops) but I think it's probably close to the low 30's on flat ground. It is actually u

Very, very pleased with this thing now. I think it might be running a little bit rich, so I might try a few different jets at some point. I'll post some pics up when I remember to take them

I can't wait to buy this from you.

Re: I bought a moped - SlimKlim - 11-11-2016

Awesome!

If you can't get the absolute perfect air/fuel mixture, let it run a little rich rather than lean. It'll start easier when it's cold (does it even have a choke?) and it'll help it run a smidge cooler. So if it doesn't reek of fuel or dump black smoke when you crack the throttle open or have any other bad too-rich symptoms i wouldn't stress it too much.

Re: I bought a moped - ScottyB - 11-11-2016

 i hope the previous owner doesn't see you tearing around and get super jealous that you hotrodded it and made it awesome

Re: I bought a moped - EclipseTurbno93 - 12-16-2016

Haven't done much on this recently because it's too darn cold. I put some seafoam in it that I got for free from work to hopefully break up some of the carbon build up that I'm sure is in the cylinder. It makes it smoke pretty bad but I'm just telling myself its all the nasty stuff getting pulled out Big Grin

It isn't putting out any black smoke, just the normal bluish white stuff, even on hard throttle, so I might be able to get away with running an even larger jet? Will have to try at some point!

The main issue I have right now is that the old, old belt can't handle the incredible power I have now and is slipping on even the lightest touch of the throttle. Whenever I decide to get a new belt I'll have to get a couple extra hands to make sure I get it tensioned very well because I'm tired of doing it over and over

Also pretty sure the voltage regulator is dead. I had replaced the headlight and then went down a hill to fast and it blew out. Starting to think it might be easier to replace the whole headlight assembly that uses an easier to source bulb. The speedo doesn't work anymore so it don't need to be anything fancy. Also need to look into fixing the horn. Oh and I should probably fix the front brake at some point

Sounds like some shit you would see in a cartoon

Re: I bought a moped - EclipseTurbno93 - 02-08-2017

Anyone want to buy this as a paddock cruiser so I can afford a dirt cheap, broken old motorcycle?

Lol. Its a shame I've lost all the photos from my possessed GS500 project. It'd be a great cold shower for you right now.

This is nothing as fancy as that though. It's an old 100 cc two stroke. Barely a step up haha. [Image: 9ef49353cd4f17946d6f9ed6f63cb7a4.jpg]
But look at how cool it is.

Re: I bought a moped - Senor_Taylor - 04-28-2017

So, for those of you that don't know. I own this now.

We did some rewiring and painted the exhaust the other day.

After one extensive test, I have concluded that the moped can not make it up the Copper Hill.

Re: I bought a moped - JPolen01 - 04-28-2017

The copper Hill is serious business! Is this making an appearance at hyperfest?

Re: I bought a moped - SlimKlim - 04-28-2017

0/10 not nearly enough purple & gold paint.

You best believe it!
